Why does Millsap have to start? Have any of you asked him if he'd be willing to get 30 mins as the 3rd big? Maybe a big contract and the chance to play with his little brother - and play for Quin - would trump this perceived need to start. While I agree there was friction when he and Favors were competing for the starting spot, we're 3 years past that. And two years past his miserable last season under Corbin. Anyone would have hated to just stand there while the ball went in to Big Al, back out and then back in so Jefferson could get his offense.
He had high praise for Quin when Elijah signed with Utah. Perhaps Paul also realizes what a beating his body takes as a starting 4 and wouldn't be opposed to coming off the bench. In my ideal scenario, Favors is the first one out midway through the first, allowing Millsap to then play opposite Gobert.
Unlikely? Yes. But I think more plausible than guessing Favors would be traded (absurd, IMO) or that Millsap would be our starting SF.

I don't see the issue with playing the biggest starting line up in the NBA. Force teams adjust to us yada yada yada.....

We need to stop talking about starters and back ups like they are the only concepts that matter. If, for some reason, Paul Millsap was willing to come to the Jazz as a part of a 3 man rotation, it would be fantastic for the Utah Jazz. The only thing we`re really giving up by signing him is cap room this summer. Next year we`ll have plenty of it again, and I really don`t see any player having more impact than Millsap coming to Utah as a free agent.
Paul Millsap would make us a whole lot better as a team. What`s not to like about that?

Yeah as a mentor he would be ok. But the disruption to everything else we are trying to do just wouldn't be worth it. This would represent effectively scrapping our current direction and going another way. And frankly I am too excited to see the best defensive team the league has ever known playing next year.
I don't see why it is a total disruption, why do you say that. Also, he is not bad on defense. Not really the way I would want to go, but I can see some positives.

It is a complete disruption to the chemistry and team identity we started building at the end of last season. Sap simply does not bring enough to replace one of our key players, or take significant minutes from any of them at this point. The one we need replaced (Burke) will not be replaced by Sap. I think you don't mess with what we had going unless you are getting a tier 1 player. Sap is not a tier 1 player.

I disagree. We built chemistry with a revolving door at the wing. Burks hurt, Hood hurt, Ingles - good but not a starter, the rest - meh. Adding Sap to the starting lineup, which will work, only solidifies the starting 5. Sap may not be tier one, and he may be, but he's ****ing solid in not only game play but the intangibles. This move is the not-so-crazy type of move the Jazz need to make in order to take advantage of last years exponential growth. We can't be afraid to take risks, and considering the player this is a great risk to take imho.

Maybe we sign the guy and play him at the three for a while then ask if he'll take the 6th man role. Apparently it was a very amicable breakup... his brother plays here... he liked it here by all accounts... he like Quinn.
If we could get him for 3 yrs at around $45isn M I'm game. I just wonder if he'd take the step back that would make this work really well or if it is too much to ask of the guy. Depending on the situation though I can see either him or Favors on the bench during crunchtime and pissed about it.

this is all ridiculous .. Favors is a borderline star with every chance of becoming an all star calibre player in the next few years. Why the hell would anyone downgrade to a shorter, older version ? I like Milsap but he's not going to take you anywhere, did anyone not notice his disappearing act in the playoffs ?

He's not starting at the 3. Could he make occasional starts there? Sure, but that's not his primary position.
And there can be no position battle between him and Favors. You are just asking for trouble there

I agree with this. Don't see the same potential chemistry issues with Carroll, the only question for me is the cost to acquire. Unless Millsap takes a discount (which he probably shouldn't) I'd look at other options.

I was not really a hater. I just think he was highly overrated. I was not sad to see him go as I thought it was past time. But the amount the guy gets overrated on this site and by Jazz fans is beyond belief.

I argued that Favors was better before Millsap left and I still believe he was. At the very least he should have been playing over him as we were going nowhere with Millsap as our starting PF. I still stand by those statements. At the very most I disliked Millsap because he was in the way of a potentially far better player. And I see that as a proven fact.

Because the concepts of starters and backups matter to players who see themselves as starters. Millsap, Favors and Gobert see themselves as starters and potential all stars. None of them will accept being a backup. None of them will accept sitting at the end of games. Therefore when it comes to having a good locker room you can't have that kind of situation. The problem with Millsap's impact coming to Utah is it has as much if not more chance of having a negative impact as it does having a positive one.
