What's new

***Jazz v Tankers Preseason game - Tue Oct 8, 7pm***

I hope everyone remembers all the gushing in this thread when the regular season starts and the opposing team hasn't played three of the last four nights and actually cares...

What is your very early opinion of Burke?
He had no trouble getting wherever he wanted to go on offense or sticking with Curry on defense. Hard to say how much of that was Burke and how much of that was tired Warriors' legs. Thought his decision making was generally on point. Forced a couple passes, and didn't give Kanter enough time to set a screen, but I only cringed at one of his shots (IIRC). He was fantastic in transition, and seemed comfortable giving the ball to Gordo and playing off-ball in the halfcourt, which is very encouraging as well. If he continues to get to his spots on the court with relative ease, defend well and make good decisions, he'll at least be serviceable. His upside will be determined by how well and from what spots/in what situations he's able to hit shots. Hopefully he's more patient than the average Jazzfan.

I'll be the wet blanket.

Golden State was playing their third game in four nights, and it showed. No hustle plays, tired legs. Players aren't in playing shape yet.

Hayward had a nice all-around game, but he was still pretty shaky creating for himself off the dribble. More of those pull-ups need to fall for him to be an effective facilitator. I would've liked to see Burke initiate the halfcourt offense more. He was having no trouble getting into the paint (although he's still in the early stages of figuring out what to do once he gets there).

Gobert looked awkward, Jeremy got abused a bit when being posted by David Lee. While Evans energy and jumpshot were terrific, he'll be targetted by opposing teams with bigger bigs (not sure how many teams have the bigs to make this a problem).

Can everyone agree that this preseason game was more exciting than just about every regular season game last season ;)

^agree with all that. I do think the one area that was truly worthy of praise is rebounding. I see that continuing.

What is your very early opinion of Burke?

It was much more enjoyable than last year's games to watch.

I'm with PKM on the rebounding, I think rebounding will be up this year, and with better defense there will be more rebounds to be had. I could see 2 players avg 10.

GVC also has some good points.

The warriors did play a few preseason games and may have been tired a bit, but at the same time they also have played 2 games already and should be gelling more than the Jazz.
Evans did look good on his shots, and he was hustling out there on the boards and all over, but he did get abused by Lee on the post.

Hayward didn't look as crisp as we hoped, but he always starts the year slow. I liked that bank shot he's added, and appreciated his rebounding.

I liked the running and faster pace with these guys, but thought they did an ok job in the half court offense with plenty of room for improvement. Kanter was too slow on the block with his post up game, needs to get better at the pass back out to Burke and reset the post if it's not what he wants. One of the things I loved about Malone and Stockton.

Burks made some amazing shots, but I would prefer he took more "good" shots instead of having to make the tough ones. They won't fall every night.

Gobert did look lost out there. He has time though.

I'm curious to see how Marvin and Rush integrate back when they are back to healthy.

I like the effort on defense. I hope it was more good defense than the Warriors just missing shots. It seemed to be a mix of the two.

The problem with him being the 2nd unit guy is that he doesnt have anyone to draw his man (open shot), create an opportunity for him (open shot), or really even run pnr with (open shot). really almost all of his buckets were in isolation and that can often lead to contested, in traffic or off balance shots (which has been his bread and butter since college anyway). I dont expect him to get many wide open looks in the 2nd unit, but that might still not be a bad thing, he has shown he is the probably the only wing that can thrive in iso on this team.

just saw the game,
man, that was beautiful

- no alfense
- solid d, almost every gs shot was contested, you just demoralize the opponent playing like that the whole game
- evans is the best 15min guy in the nba
- burks is special
- burke actually looks good, damn you haters ))

this team will be so fun to watch this season

Agreed with that and everyone else who posted this was much more enjoyable to watch than last year's team. No black hole, no 6'6" PF: now we defend the paint instead of giving up the paint. Harp mentioned how the W's were not getting any easy layups. This alone should make a big difference this year.

So much more fun to watch Gobert move like he means it than watch Al stand there or slowly trot around.

What are your excuses for his lack of production playing with the first unit then? The reason he doesn't get opportunities in the first unit is because of how he plays in the second unit --> drive into traffic and hope to not get blocked.

He made a couple really good plays last night (i.e. rebound putback and 1, bad foul call that should have been and 1). He also made several really bad plays. He's good in open court and scramble but completely sucks in structured offense.

I was wondering when you would show up Debbie.

I didn't get to watch the game (my dvr is screwed up)...so did it look like Hayward added anything new to his game (floater, pull-up jumper, post game, etc.) or did he just take open set shots?

He looks very confident shooting range out of the pnr. Step back J last game and a quick, kind of off balance J during scrimmage when the defense went under. He needs more than midrange jumpers though. Way too many last night. But he's getting the assists in so I guess I don't care if he goes 4-12 with 8:1 A:T. That's more like 12 for 21. Make another shot and add in his typical 5 free throws and it's a very efficient game on what looks like inefficient shooting.

Word.
I was impressed by damn near everybody.
Evans, super impressive.
Kanter, shot look sweet, played good defense
Favors, great defense and transition buckets
Hayward, quiet but solid
Burks, spectacular at times, out of control at times
Burke, pretty damn good debut
Lucas, probably mvp of the game
Biedrins, solid

Everyone else (gobert, jefferson, mcguire, etc) meh.

I wonder what will happen when rush and marvin come back... might be bye bye burks..... hayward, jeffy, burks, rush, marvin, what will corbin do?
Maybe marvin plays the 4 and its bye bye evans?

I'd rather put Burks or Rush in the starting line-up take Jefferson and play him a few minutes here and there. I think Evans will be a 15 min player, spark off the bench. I don't want to see him against starters, so Marvin in as the 4 in the beginning. If that makes sense.

Burks isn't going to get benched for Jefferson or Marvin in the 2nd unit because he's a 2, they're 3's. He's not going to get benched for Rush in the second unit either because 3 and D doesn't do much good without distributors setting up the three. Burks' chucking drives will be needed there. Hate him being called a chucker, or see that that's what they'll need from him.

Jefferson and Rush work better with the first unit because their skill set is much more complimentary. They're role players who need to stay out of the stars way and wait for an open pass. Jefferson's an ex-All Star and very good at running rotations. I saw Burks still struggling to run rotation last night and kind of got in the way. He's too damn antsy to stand in the corner waiting for a three, and shouldn't be used that way anyway.

Burks can get 20 off the bench and that's the right amount IMO.

Franklin* just had a seizure from an overload of satisfaction.

Meh, I'm used to Corbin outcoaching the opposition.

Hayward's efficiency numbers are going to take a nose dive - at least during the first few months.

My guess is when the shot clock is winding down and The Jazz are not running their offense, you'll see Hayward with the ball in his hands.

he doesnt produce with the first unit because he became the stand-on-the-perimeter guy who waited for the offense to fail and kick it to him to for the final few seconds. I was saying that i his bread and butter is isolation (or as you call it, drive into traffic and hope to not get blocked), and thus will see more success in the second unit. I was just noting that others who want open shots for burke probably wont see many in the second unit, but it doesnt matter, because his game revolves around being in and jumping through traffic anyway.

Corbin's obvious change this year is EVERYTHING has side pnr as a bailout option (vs. last season's read motion, drive and dish b.s. when alfense couldn't bail them out). Even the post plays are resetting into side pnr a lot instead of the total clear out. That and Kanter isn't a black hole so it's actually an option now.

What I'm getting at is the late clock scenarios should have reasonably efficient scoring plays for whatever 1-3 is filling a spot on the floor.

Oh, sorry for misreading, and agreed.

Burks catch and drive isn't an iso play though. I'd like to see them try some left-to-right iso clear out for him though.

As a Jazz fan, I don't ask for much. I just want the games to be fun to watch, I want to see them try hard, and I don't want to see bone headed coaching moves. Last night game was flat out a blast to watch. Besides David Lee killing Evans, everyone looked good on defense. Everyone was trying hard and even though we may lose a few games this year, they are fun team to watch. I just hope they are this fun during the season.

one thing I was impressed with was his handle looked very tight.
Only one turnover, will say there was a couple moments he was lucky he didn't turn it over.

Well he did have 8 assists and made those around him much better, and was a leader on the court

yes

I think the jazz will be a good rebounding team, but not that good.

Favors 25 min. 14 rebounds
Hayward 26 min. 7 rebounds
Evans 25 min. 13 rebounds
Gobert 12 min 5 rebounds

Those are insane per 36min numbers for rebounds a game. Then there's Kanter 20 min. 4 rebounds lol. We're the warriors even trying. Do we rebound that well in the regular season against anyone? I will admit GS didn't exactly play inspired ball last night. Would like to see us play a team giving more then a half assed effort to defense and rebounding before I say we are elite rebounding team. Though I think we will

Thought Burke was aggressive, and under control most the night (1to.) and did well playing off the ball. Seemed comfortable playing with Hayward, and didn't hold the ball and look laxidasical like he did in summerleague. After the game, and when I saw his stats was a little surprised he only had three assists. He does need to work on getting deeper in the lane before he goes for a push shot. Twice I saw him use this shot around the foul line because he got in trouble. He did look quicker then in summer league.

Did you not watch Favors dominate the boards all over the court? He was tipping the ball to himself and looked so natural doing everything well that apparently you took his finesse as GSW not trying.
