What's new

***Jazz v Tankers Preseason game - Tue Oct 8, 7pm***

I'm thrilled with tonight. Huge progress team wise. Still a ton of work to do but a very encouraging start.

@Siro: I like your observations. I love how Richard Jefferson got on the floor for the ball after Favors blocked Bogut in the 1st quarter. First pre-season game, and a vet is working hard like that.

So we finally have a semi-official game to make preliminary assessment of where we are. And I think we're in a good place. We have a tough defensive minded team with players who obviously love the game. The guys go after every rebound and every hustle play, and it's not even the regular season yet. The energy level makes the games fun to watch, and I believe we have a solid team all around despite all the naysayers. I can even see us winning 40 games.

Burke: He had a good game, but I do think he'll struggle quite a bit this season. As promising as he is, Burke is, and plays like, a rookie. He has decent quickness and good ball handling skills. He can cut, slash, split defenders, drive, and has good range. He's also a tenacious defender, which makes up for his lack of size. But he's a rookie. He will turn the ball over. He doesn't yet know how to select his shots. He gets confused mid-drive and makes ridiculous decisions. But they're all very fixable rookie mistakes, and Burke will probably be a solid PG for the Jazz.

Burks: It's almost like the 6th man role was tailor made for him! Why would anyone rather see him start? He is the same old Burks, but with more muscle and some refined moves. He can be the focal point of the second unit's offense, and I can't wait to see how he develops.

Favors: It's too early to tell since Favors tends to be a slow starter. But I think I can see hints of improvement to his offensive game. He's still not all that good offensively, and maybe he'll never be. I don't think it's necessary for him to become a skilled scorer for the team to succeed, and thus I am not as worried about his offense.

Kanter: He mostly exhibited his much improved mid-range shot. In addition to his quicker decision making in the post, Kanter will be a beast this year. I can't even imagine what his ceiling might be.

Evans: He had a good game, and I'm sure he'll be a serviceable player if needed. But he's not really "NBA good". He can jump and block shots. He can certainly dunk the ball. And he added a smooth mid-range jumper. But he still moves awkwardly on both ends, and he still doesn't defend his man the way he should. He has put on some mass, and he's probably more useful than Biedrins (maybe even Gobert for now).

Gobert: This guy... His offense is very raw, but his defensive potential is simply incredible. The man is HUGE. He's astonishingly long and has very active hands. He tries to challenge every shot, and he visibly disrupts the opponents' flow. But he's weak, young, and without much of an offensive game. Give him a year. I think we got something very special here.

Jefferson: Very composed, plays smart, and likely to earn some good minutes. He provides a much needed level-headedness to the team, and he has a good all-around game. I actually like him.

Lucas: He seems to play with an edge, but he's way too much of a chucker. His shots fell today, but I can picture the outrage on JF when it doesn't. so I hopes he gets some minutes.

Scrubs: Played like scrubs.

Agreed.

I would say too.

Hayward: Very quiet tonight, didn't shoot well, but added that stats. He got his teammates involved and still looked nice.

This
I have him as the mvp tonight but we will sour on him quickly

Burks seems to like the 6th man, neon flashing green spotlight role based off interview

Ya I saw that interview and he looked genuinly happy.... of course it was after a win in a game that he played well in and got good minutes.

We will see how he feels afrer a loss when he struggles and doesn't get minutes (especially after rush comes back)

I got to see an entire game for the first time in about 2 years. it was good.

I give the game ball to Alec Burks. he looked like the best player on the team to me.

burks is 2 inches taller than wade lol

Miami should bring wade off the bench.... he is made for the 6th man role

just noticed....

favors @ 20 rebs + 4.5 blks/36mins tonight;

hayward @ a triple double/36mins (11,11,10);

Thank god we have a god damn defense!!

Tonight I'll eat some crow on Evans. Still not sure about him or what minutes he should get, but he looked good, and has gained lots of confidence, didn't just look like a dunker. Very excited about Gobert's game tonight. Looks like a solid third defensive big for years to come. Haywards offense was off, but he did a little of everything. Other then scoring he had a LBJ type line with 7 rebounds and 8 assists. He looked good with the ball in hand, and nice floor game. Burks looks like he will flourish in the sixth man role, and get to the line a ton. Thought Kanter and Favors played well off each other. Did Kanter even miss a single midrange shot?? And Favors swallowed up every rebound and was very good defensively. I gained some confidence in Burke today. He needs to work on getting a little deeper on those floaters, if he improves this it will open his floor game to get more assists and get to the line more. Not a great shooting night, but should improve with time and minutes on the court. JL3 is a definite upgrade to Tinsley and Watson. If he's hot like tonight play him more, if not play Burks more at pg. at least he's a threat on the court and can make a play from time to time. He's got some street ball in him. This will sometimes be both good and bad. Looks like gone are the days of the red sea parting on defense. See ya Millsap and Al. Don't let the door hit ya on the way out.

And god I hope GS is this bad!

Good post.
Repped

I think M williams is going to lose his spot. Evans hit several long shots with confidence. We may have our stretch 4 already.

Whoa this was one of the best game I've seen the past couple years. No more selfish vets. I even like Beans right now...he seems to understand his role which is a far cry from our previous vets. The only caveat may be JLIII, but I can live with it.

Burke looked great....need more games to really get an impression but impressed with his defense on the leagues best offensive point guard, impressed with the dribble, impressed with how he maneuvers in a PnR, and impressed with the fast break.
Burks...wow

Was impressed with Boler and Harpring. "Burk Brothers"
