Jazzfanz: Racist, Sexist, Anti-gay remarks Ok. Swears and All Caps Not Ok.

I've found the Jazzfanz GD board is a nice little slice of Utah sports fan americana. It's given me a unique look into the psyche of the typical Utah Jazz/sports fan that I was never really all that familiar with.

I suck at sports. I'm short. Not athletic. I've done just about everything "non-sporty" one can do to their body throughout my young life. I made fun of jocks in High school and took their abuse as well. All in all, I've generally been a "**** sports" type of guy. Until I fell in deep, deep love with the Utah Jazz.

Since joining JF and sharing my love of the Jazz with others, I've noticed that many of the stereotypes I had of "sports-types" reins true on these boards. Lots of ignorant, racist, sexist, anti-gay remarks are the norm around here, with barely a bat of an eye. While the minute anyone even hints at violence, cussin, or other dirty things neg reps are spread and even infractions.

This is bull ****, and I think it has to do with many factors. One being that Utah is a conservative state and somehow calling people camel jockey's and disrespecting women is cool in those circles, for some. Another is this board is run by members who feel its important to enforce some moral rules (family friendly) on this board, but definitely not when it come to a MODERATOR calling people camel jockey's. Call me a hater all day, but I'm calling it like it is. There's a double standard being enforced here and its stupid. OB may go far in his critiques and posts, but the dude is the only one here who brings more truth, which many here are unable to process. Why? Cause it proves you are who you don't think you are, or don't want to be. A dick.

I know this has been brought up many times and we've hashed through it. But don't you think it's funny that there are maybe 2 women who post on this site. We've pretty much scared off all the gay members. This board is a collection of young to middle aged white dudes, and some of them think it's ok to call other races "colored". ****ing wow.

I have no idea where I'm going with this, but reading the GD board lately has made me feel like I'm participating in some kind of closet white power rally and it's making me ill. Think about it folks and please share your thoughts.

It it makes you feel any better people have been warned and infracted for the types of remarks you mention.

To think, all this time I always thought BP was a dude. Instead, we find out she's just another Jewish lesbian starting a complaint thread. THIS DAMN BOARD IS GOING STRAIGHT TO HELL!

There's a reason why he's not BigBoyPeterzz tbh.

jk Peterzzbro I like you and stand with you in your cause against racialism.

Stoked is an awful and regularly insults people. It's kind of sad he is able to be a mod.

Racist, sexist, and anti-gay remarks are routinely infracted. Not quite sure what you are talking about. If you notice such posts, please report them.

I feel stupid about the all caps thing. I should've followed my complaint.

ALL CAPS.

That was the only REAL reason I started this stupid thread.

I realize this post is full of tears, but it seems this **** rarely get called out. This place should erupt when language like that is used. I just hope this thread reminds us that the internet is serious business and what we type on here does matter to some degree.

Do you post on very many message boards? For the most part, there's never a large female contingent. I post on several sports boards, some make this look one look incredibly tame, and there are some that are much more strict than this…neither one has many female posters. Actually, the one that is the most rowdy has the most female posters. Sports boards just typically don't attract female posters, at least that is my experience.

Now then, I'm the poster that called somebody "colored", but you were obviously too big of a bitch to call me out on it. You want to make a call out post, then name names, otherwise you're just as much of a problem. Do I think it's ok to call somebody colored? Of course not. Have I ever done it? Of course not. Was I joking around and trying to goad some posters when I said it? You bet your ***. I often say a lot of **** I don't agree with just to rile people up.

As for scaring off the gay members, I wasn't aware we had any to begin with (I don't believe KatieMCR was gay, and I do believe that referencing her as gay would be considered intolerant to the transgender community). While many of the things that brought up aren't acceptable, I don't really think those are the reasons why we don't have females or homosexuals posting here.

Oh, and yeah, I'm sure you're really shocked that a message board for the Utah Jazz is full of white males. If I remember right, Utah is a pretty white state. Ever been to a game? Predominately white people. I'm not sure why this board being full of white males is a bad thing…in fact, to imply that it is a problem is fairly racist by itself.

If you do that, we might get more female posters here.

Im a little racist, a little sexist, and i have a small weiner.

I resemble this thread.

Merica is great

Let's be real, here. Jazzfanz is the second-worst basketball message board (shout out to the horrible Clutchfans) I've ever seen and the worst I've ever been a part of. All of these complaints, and many more, are wholly valid. But when the actual moderation of the board doesn't reflect its rules, and years of borderline racist, offensive, sophomoric, and decidedly not family-friendly content go unmoderated, it's kind of on you to realize that Jazzfanz has a culture that isn't going to change. You can accept that and continue to read the board because you're looking for Utah Jazz content, or you can accept that and leave.

The one thing you probably can't do is change it.

Reading some of the other basketball forums, like Pacers Digest (to name-drop one of the really good ones) and then coming back to Jazzfanz is a bit of an ice-water shock. When you see people engaged in intelligent, mature conversations without the emphasis on "humor" and name-calling we have here, in a place where the rules are actually enforced in a clear way, it becomes obvious that good moderation and good conversation are not actually impossible dreams.

The crappiness of this board isn't because most Jazz fans are jerks. It's because most Jazz fans who aren't jerks either stopped posting here or never started.
