What's new

Just when you thought Tomic talk was dead....

would be a great 4th big. I would have no problem bringing him in if we trade away Millsap or Jefferson.

I do doubt his desire to make the move to the Jazz for less money and more time on the bench.

12-9 in 23 minutes in Game 2. Real Madrid equals series to 1 with a good victory in Barcelona ( 2 of the 5 or 6 better teams in Europe ).

Numbers in Europe not have the same important, but Ante is one of the best interior players in Europe, no question about it. Same for Lorbek, Vazquez, Nikola Mirotic, Mirza Teletovic or Joel Freeland ( next nba players, probably this year )

Fesenko was a nobody in Europe when drafted,
he is still a nobody in Europe.
Tomic on the other hand is a constant contributor for a very strong NT and for a famous club team in a very competitive league!

Teletovic is the man!
He has nice athleticism coupled with fine basketball skills.

True, but Fesenko has NBA strength/defensive ability. Tomic does not (and may never have it, though I hope I'm wrong).

I find that European BB stats tend to be quite unreliable. Wasn't Rubio's last year in Europe quite terrible? I remember a lot of people feared that this trend would continue when he came to Minnesota.

Safe to say that that assumption was quite incorrect.

Good Third

And playing AWESOME in 4th match. Really good final series.

Thanks for the updates!

Just curious: have you seen anything from these games, or is all your info about them coming from the box scores?

Also interesting that in the playoffs Tomic is now getting much more time than Begic. Weren't these two 7'-2" centers splitting time most of the season, with Begic holding the clear advantage in rebounding and blocked shots? Wonder why Tomic is now playing much more? Were there injury issues with Begic?

I´m Spanish and of course I saw all games ( My english level is too much low, sorry )

Begic is not injured. Rotations in Europe are different, salary cup does not exist and the top teams ( soccer teams, normally ) have authentic allstars and 12 player rotations ( 5 interiors with Begic, Tomic, Reyes, Velickovic and Mirotic ). For example They signed Kyle Singler at mid season and I must remember that SERGE IBAKA played in Real Madrid this year during lockout ( average less 15 minutes )
Because of it the statistics are less important ( and of course less minutes, less points and more split stats )
Tomic is much better player than Begic, more done for a final matches against Barcelona IMO

Really appreciate the information, Stockcillo. What do you think of Tomic's defense? I think we all know he's not a good shot-blocker and isn't very strong. Aside from those things, what does he either do poorly or well defensively?

Poorly, no question about it.
Ante is average defensively in Europe basketball. Not too bad rebounding and blocking but he makes too much avoidable fouls and suffers against great and strong centers. The game is different in Europe, almost all interior players makes 3 throws and plays exterior game.
In NBA his problem probably would be 1 x 1 defensively and strong ( It´s true, the physical level is very different ) but we are probably speaking that he will play against bench players most of the time.
Talent in bench interior players in NBA is limited. Tomic would have more offensive talent than others

Her defense probably would be like Bargnani, Okur, Illgauskas, Nesterovic... I know poor defense, but these players was/are starters or allstars

Quick question for those that watch him. I know he's 7-2 but only like 220 lb's, but could some of you see him playing pf? I'm asking because I don't see how he can guard Centers in this league, or back them down in the post on offense.

Thoughts...

Probably Pau Gasol came to the league with less weight?... I don´t remenber, but yes he can play PF and It would be his better position, playing close to Kanter or Favors and defending the power forward

I agree that we can only bring Tomic over if we are planning on trading Jefferson for scoring on the guard line (ala Kevin Martin, who can be traded straight up for Jefferson). You then start Harris (PG), Martin (SG), Hayward (SF), Favors (PF), and Kanter (C). You then have a bench w/ Millsap (PF/SF) as the 6th man (our James Harden) coupled with Tomic (C), Jeremy Evans (SF/PF), Alec Burks (SG), and Jamaal Tinsley (PG). That would be a 50+ win team in my book.

what centers are you worried about? the center position in the NBA is kind of dead right now, with a couple of exceptions like dwight or hibbert. besides, most teams in the league make little difference between 4/5, which is why every team cross-matches on D. same is true of the wing positions.

the guy is really tough to defend. he hardly ever misses in or around the paint. when he can't overpower defenses, he is so long and smooth that he just drops it in over the D. he has a soft touch with both hands. hard to imagine he couldn't help utah, give us a different look coming off the bench.

paul is a starter. kanter isn't even close to one yet.

I would love to drop Jefferson and bring Tomic over.

Why do I feel there is less than 5% chance this happens this year?

i think a bigger challenge is unloading al before the season. maybe at the trade deadline as a big expiring contract, but i don't know that his trade value this summer matches his salary.

...unless we're willing to take back some bad salary in exchange.
