Kobe Bryant vs. Alec Burks, Rookie Season Stats Comparison

A-Train (old)

Well-Known Member
Kobe Bryant is 6'6 205 lbs rookie season 1996-97

Mpg 15.5, Pts 7.6, 1.9 Rebs, 1.3 Asts, 0.7 Stls, 2.3 Free throws attempted, 81.9% from free throw, 41.9% from the field, 37.5% from three

Alec Burks is 6'6 202 lbs rookie season 2011-12

Mpg 15.9, 7.2 Pts, 2.2 Rebs, 0.9 Asts, 0.5 Stls, 2.4 Free throws attempted, 72.7% from free throw, 42.9% from the field, 33.3% from three

Kobe played 12 more games than Burks did since Burks rookie season started during a lock-out. Kobe took more three's than Burks did, but Burks took more two's, considering Kobe took about 50 more shots than Burks that is pretty good.

Also to note both players made the play-offs in their rookie season and Kobe was drafted with the 13th overall pick and Burks was drafted with the 12th overall pick.

interesting comparison... one thing to point out is that the only reason he was drafted 13th is because his agent had a charlotte-LA deal lined up to get him to the lakers, and basically threatened anybody before 13 that if they drafted him he would hold out and not sign. so he kind of dicked his way to 13th. otherwise, kobe was a clear top-10 pick that year, even without the benefit of hindsight.

Nice comparison, but Kobe was 18 years old his rookie year and Burks was 20.

In Kobe's second season he averaged 15.4 ppg 3.1 reb, 2.5 ast, on 26 minutes. The question is if Burks gets 26min can he produce that well? He's very capable but with Hayward, Foye, Marvin, I dont see him getting that many min.

The "he" in the bolded part is the agent, and the "his" is Kobe's. I know the Nets wanted to pick Kobe and I believe Kobe has said he would have played wherever, but his agent was playing hardball.

I wonder how many other rookies you could pull this off with. Probably a lot.

his agent was doing everything possible to get him to LA. you think he was doing that on his own, without instruction from kobe? kobe was saying all the right things publicly ("oh i'm just excited to come to the NBA, i'll let all that other stuff work itself out") but he had given his agent the marching orders.

you would think so, but actually not. that scoring rate is pretty solid for a rookie. that makes kobe's rookie scoring on a per-36 basis 17.6. this past season, only irving (21.8) and klay thompson (18.5) scored better on a per-36 basis, with faried (16.4) and burks (16.3) 3rd and 4th.

But Burkes scoring rate isn't as high as Kobe's either, so I could also pick from several players that you haven't listed in order to pull off a similar comparison.

huh?? my point is you can't, because only three rookies scored more than burks on a per-minute basis, and one of those was essentially a statistical tie.

same is true for just about any year. go look at just about any season and you'll find that only 3-5 rookies are in the burks/kobe neighborhood of 16-17 pp36 or higher. 16-17 pp36 for a rookie is pretty elite territory.

Okay, I'll simplify. You set the bar higher than the OP. In other words, Burkes didn't make the cut for the comparison using your criteria, so how does that refute my point that I bet you could pull off a similar comparison to Kobe with a lot of players other than Burkes?

1) OP showed that burks' production compared favorably to kobe's rookie production.
2) you said that would be true of many rookies.
3) i showed that it's not true of very many rookies at all: 3-4 per season most years
4) you're still arguing with me

what am i missing?

Burks will never be Kobe Bryant, but the numbers and his skills show that he could be a solid and exciting starting 2-guard of the future. Maybe a 16-18 point career scorer.

How unbelievably slow you are. -18, as usual.

lol

comparing one of the all-time greats to Alec Burks.

What next, someone using stats from Favors or Kanter to compare them to Malone?

Burks has a VERY long way to go.

Having said that, Burks had a nice rookie year. I hope we see a lot more PT for him... and I hope he works his butt off to become the best player he can be. Whether or not that translates into a Raja Bell like career or Kobe, it remains to be seen.

I like Burks, but I still think there are a lot of players that would look good when compared to Kobe in a similar fashion, and that is the only point I was trying to make.

donuts, your list shows exactly what i mean. if you take out the ones who wouldn't qualify to be ranked because of sample size (elliott williams, ian mahinmi, sundiata gaines, patrick mills, othyus jeffers, dj white, thomas gardner, alando tucker, and probably many, many more) then what your list shows is exactly what i've been saying: that both rookie kobe and rookie alec were above-average per-minute scorers for rookies.

you made it sound like qualified rookies who match kobe's rookie scoring rate were a dime a dozen, and they're not, as evidenced by your own post.

The spin is getting deep in this one...

He gave you 35 names above Alec in the last five years and a butt load more within 10%. How many new players actually make the NBA each year? Maybe 35??? So this list of 60+ names is 1/3 of all new players. Keep up the hardass/****ty post routine.

This debate is stupid because of their 3 pt shooting. Alex will become very, very easy to defend if the doesn't get his 3 pt shooting up. Kobe is very, very hard to defend because he can hit that three point shot.

Move on.
