It was reported that no team could offer more than the MLE. But there was nothing about an offer until Portland. And as Matthews said, the Jazz never made an offer, and it was reported by Siler that they told him they would let the market dictate his value. And just as with Millsap, Portland made an exhorbitant offer. No one can deny that they are overpaying Matthews. My beef is that he fit well with the Jazz and that there's a good chance he will be worth more in the future. I'm also pissed because I think it's pretty evident they could've gotten him for less than what Portland offered if they had a discussion. But they never discussed it; they said let the market dictate. So we have Bell now, which is a good consolation and will probably help us more next year. But we still need another guard and if we matched Matthews, we probably would not have been able to get a good one.

Show me the evidence, because in reading Siler's tweet and what Matthews said, there is no way in hell we would have been able to get him for less.

All the stories don't add up to me. Sounds like it was his agent who was postering with the MLE demand. He thought Wesley was in the driver's seat because the Jazz said he was a priority and they would be ready to match any offer (up to the max of MLE). Guess they weren't factoring in the LT very carefully, or other options the Jazz had. It's moot now; we have Raja and hopefully RB or Brown, which makes us a serious contender next season.

Some of the comments about Matthews on here are really stupid, and I mean moronic. I'm a Jazz fan but when my team or whomever I'm associated with behaves in a disrespectful manner, I won't respect them. My take on this was that instead of giving Matthews a fair, reasonable offer, they low balled him with a QO of 937 K, yes that's what it was because I looked it up, and told him to let the market dictate, in the shrewd, wiseass manner of KOC, and like Kiri said, KOC didn't learn his lesson, and sure enough, as Aint/Hopper always says, Portland bit him in the ***, just like they did with Millsap.

So, you can't really blame Portland, can you? KOC never even made a fair offer to Matthews. That's what I call disrespecting. If he made a respectable offer, then Matthews would've accepted. He actually admitted that in the interview. So, will you guys take off your blindfolds and look at the reality of the situation, please.

Writeu, you will never convince myopic Jazz fans that the organization does anything wrong. Look back on the comments about how Wes isn't worth the money but these same people do not want to trade AK. Is he worth the money? Oh yea, I forgot his intangibles. These same people were pissed that the Jazz didn't make an offer to Korver, a one dimension player who fizzles out during playoff time three year's running. Korver got $ 5 million and there were many fans still disappointed the Jazz did not match.

Some said Wes is 23 years old and he has tapped his potential while cheering the decision to bring back the "young" 33 year old Raja Bell. As they express their excitement about Raja toughness and defense while ignoring that Wes consistently graded out as our best defender.

The last dig is that Portland will be worse than us. Simply an assumption but it could be true. Considering all the injuries the Blazers had and the fact they were only a few games behind us. I hope they are right. This idea that Portland will be worse seems like a way most pro-Jazz organization fans rationalize away the FO bad decision's. Instead are the Jazz a better team with Wes or Raja, sorry but I have not seen anything that can convince me the Jazz are better with Raja. Sure they save money but it does not help us win more games.

Read the interview. You heard what Matthews said. He would've taken less and his father said he was expecting 3-5 million per year. What does that tell you? Yeah, we could've gotten him for maybe a million more than what we're paying Bell. Stupid ploy if you ask me. It'll be okay next year, but look down the road. Wes has a long career ahead, and Raja maybe a couple good years left. This is not how to build a championship team.

This is exactly how you build a championship team. Our core is young... mix in a gritty veteran who plays the same style coach preaches, who won't sulk for starters minutes, who's great in the locker room, & who wants to be here....

I wrote how Matthews will probably end up being a Bell-type player in the future, in another thread, but we get that player in Bell now & for cheaper.

Wesley Matthews grew to be one of my favs, just how Byron Russell became but I rotating CJ/Bell/AK/GHis a better mix for the development of Hawyard.

Since the Brewer-trade, Matthews averaged 11.0 pts, 2.8 reb, 2.0 ast, 1.3 stl, and w/ 50% FG, 90% FT, and 41% 3pt. Really good numbers, but I gurantee he could average 30-35 min in Portand and he won't won't come close to those numbers.

We'll miss his defense and toughness and his ability to score in the paint and get to the FT line, plus he was great at getting out in transition, not because he was exceptionally fast, but he just anticipated TO's and long rebounds and changed ends quicker than the opposing backcourt.

But all that's just role-player material, and the difference between Wes and CJ isn't worth 5 yrs $34 million, even if injuries hit AK and Bell.
