1320 was being leased and will likely not continue as a sports station per Internet rumors.

Why 1280? There goes their "independent" label that they love to throw around. As much as I can't stand some 1320 guys, it's always sad to see people lose jobs.

I wonder how this will impact Locke. Probably not at all. I'm sure DJ/PK will stick around, so will Monson I imagine (yuck). Who knows about the rest. Anyone here got more info?

I thought they already owned 1320kfnz? Well at any rate, there doesn't seem to me to be much room for 2 major sports stations in Utah.

There are currently 3 stations. 1280 was not making much money. LHM didn't own 1320. They were leasing it.

1280's "independence" will simply change into "home of the Jazz" the same way a station changes format from country to top 40 overnight. This happens all the time in the radio industry. For the most part I doubt guys will lose jobs permanently. Guys just have to reinvent themselves. Obviously the big names will remain in sports (Monson, DJ, PK, Locke), but some of the second tier and producer types will end up doing something else, like moving from sports to talk or news radio or something.
 
So, um, this is really big news, and so it should likely come with; ya know- a source?

As for why it's happening, I see a couple of reasons:

First, they are the only real competition in the market, so it makes sense to wipe them out, what with the cut-throat way business works and all. (besides, 1280 bites)
Second, and this makes me happy if it's true, 1280 has a much MUCH stronger signal than 1320 does, i guess 1280 is something like 5000 watts or something. 1280 doomed themselves when they upgraded their broadcast tower to walk on top of 1320 on radios with bad reception without getting programming to match it.

It will be interesting to see what will happen to all of the washed out football players that are putting sarcastic bad radio out on the airways at 1280 the zone. As for Monson, I bet he just focuses on being a newspaper columnist. i kinda feel for Jake though, I hope he lands on his feet somewhere in the radio market.

(edit: there is the possibility that the folks at 'The Zone' will continue their bad radio on their FM station 97.5, so those of you who like brainless football humor, you may be in luck.)
 
I heard this this summer CJ will get his own show and will be getting airtime whether you like it or not.
 
I'm a fan of this if it gets Jan Jorgensen and Gordon Monson off the air. IMO, the Spence Checketts and Scotty G. show in the afternoon on 1320 is actually pretty good. Give them the afternoon time slot on 1280 and send Gordon packing. I'm sure DJ and PK will be brought over for the mornings. It would be nice if PK fell off a cliff. Seriously the most unlistenable person on Utah sports radio.

I'd still give the mid day time slot to Jim Rome or Dan Patrick. IMO it's nice to have a couple of hours in the afternoon to hear a national perspective on things. That doesn't leave alot of room for some of these other guys. Jan and Gunther almost certainly will get canned, they are just awful. Hans and OC probably don't stand a chance either.

I used to want to punch him in his massive beak every morning, but he actually started to grow on me once I figured out that he doesn't ever mean a word he says. He's all about stirring the ****.


IMO, Bagley needs to take a hike. That dude sucks.
 
Is it just me, or has PK gotten worse in the past 3 months? He has always been annoying, but lately he just argues over nuances that have nothing to do with sports. It's like his only purpose is to make DJ mad. I can no longer listen to that show because he bugs me so bad.

I like Hans, the guy is hilarious.


Locke wouldn't mind going back to Seattle. He's a Supersonic at heart.

The show has gone full blown DJ and PK tickle each others sphincters mode. Hour 1: "You're the greatest." "No, you are the greatest." Hour 2: "PK is the greatest great great but he says 'could care less' that's bad journalism ha ha". "No, DJ is the greatest pootie poo but I hear his kooter smells ha ha ha".

You guys aint kidding. PK is so bad. He seriously is there to piss off DJ. You can tell that DJ hates his life. He knows that he has to come to work and listen to that dipship all day long.

I bet part of the reason is PK. I cant listen to them in the morning because of him. Hans and OC is ok but not great. I try to listen to Collin Cowherd, but he can get annoying too.
 
Collin Cowherd is the biggest homer out there. He only says what ESPN would like him to say and not what's really on his mind. How the hell he got such a high job is beyond me. Dude must have some special, "oral" skills.
 
I went and got free tickets to the suns game at TOSH. DJ and PK were there doing their broadcast. DJ was reading the paper while talking and PK was just looking off into the distance. They didn't look at each other once the entire time I was there.

It was creepy.

Whenever PK is on Talkin' Sports sunday night, DJ always looks like he's trying to put on the happy joke face, but below the surface he just wants to kick PK in the nuts.

- I like Gunther. I think he'll find a place. Jan isn't very good.

- I like Hans and think he's entertaining. Whether there will be space for him...who knows. OC... My schedule caused me to stop listening to that show once he was around so I don't have any strong feelings about him either way.

-Monson - don't really like him. I think he just tries to stir stuff, but he isn't usually very interesting in doing so. Jake...never really enjoyed, but he seems to have improved a ton over the years. I'm sure he'll find a place.

- I like DJ and PK. PK trolls people, but when he is serious then I actually enjoy his thoughts.

- Ben and Scotty G kind of suck, but I still feel bad that they might lose their jobs. I really like Tony Parks and hope he ends up somewhere. I think he'll transfer over because he already is a LHM employee and does stuff related to the Bees and will probably be the play by play guy for Klauke when he retires.

- I feel bad for some of the producers who will probably be out of jobs and the borderline hosts like Scott G., Bagley, Jan, etc. who might find a place. However, there are only so many slots available in local sports radio.

The 1320 guys already work for LHM and will likely all move over to 1280. The 1280 guys will likely all be gone. Basically, 1280 will turn into 1320, but with new frequencies.

You don't like Monson? I think he's pretty good. He has the balls to call out the Jazz when they do something stupid, and his melodramatic style is entertaining. It certainly beats Locke's "CJ shoots 3% better if he scratches his *** before the shot" stat-explosion.
 
LOL at people liking Gunther. He's Utah humor personified.......whatever you're saying, just say it really loud/yell it. Bam, instant humor. Very high brow/next level ****.
