What's new

Looking for genuine discourse re: Donald Sterling/NBA

Again, there's a lot of difference between a owner and a player. Owners can and should take all of those factors into account when deciding whether or not to sign a player. On the other hand, players who are drafted CANNOT take anything into account when "selecting" their owner. Therefore an owner has a much higher standard to maintain, in my opinion.

...no one is really arguing that Sterling said what he said, and even though in private, hit the front page of the N.Y. Post because of modern day technology that he should have known was a possibility! What we are saying is that there seems to be a double standard when it comes to what the NBA says is acceptable and where they draw the line! In actuality, rap invading the NBA, is by far the worst of the worst when it comes to effecting people's thinking, especially the young and impressionable.....and yet and still is promoted at the highest level in every avenue possible, before, during and after games! Both Mushnick and my man Dutch....clearly point this out in easy terms to understand!

Attorney: Sterling's wife wants to keep Clippers

Posted May 8, 2014 3:23 PM

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- An attorney representing the estranged wife of Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling said Thursday that she will fight to retain her 50 percent ownership stake in the team.

"She will not agree to a forced or involuntary seizure of her interest," said Shelly Sterling's attorney, Pierce O'Donnell. "As her lawyers we will fight vigorously to defend her property rights."

O'Donnell also told The Associated Press that Shelly Sterling has been separated from her husband for the last year and is considering divorce.

Last week, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver banned Donald Sterling from the NBA for life and urged league owners to force him to sell the team. The move came after a recording surfaced in which Sterling made racist comments.

O'Donnell said Mrs. Sterling "abhors" the comments and that Silver had "exonerated" Mrs. Sterling in his statement last week by saying there was no decision made about other members of the family.

O'Donnell said he spoke with NBA officials Thursday morning but declined to elaborate. He said Mrs. Sterling has been working cooperatively with Silver and his staff and supported his announcement seeking a new chief executive officer and the NBA's decision to place longtime team President Andy Roeser on leave.

O'Donnell said Mrs. Sterling is an ardent Clippers fan and plans to attend Friday's playoff game against Oklahoma City.

"We abhor guilt by association in America," O'Donnell said. "The sins of the husband cannot be imputed to the wife or children."

and yes it is a violation of freedom of speech when property rights are in danger

so wife beater jason kidd does not get a lifeitme ban.
but donald who spoke in private gets a lifetime ban and suffers financial losses.

.

Totally agree that Jason Kidd should have gotten a lifetime ban. That is the next issue that the NBA needs to deal with, in my opinion. There is not room for racism or sexism in today's world.

Isiah Thomas, as well.

or DUI....
(or whatever he was convicted of)

anyhow, the lawyers are certainly going to rake it in on this...

Does anybody know exactly how the ownership of the Clippers is structured?

Your logic is flawed, since Adam Silver is in fact himself Jewish.

...I didn't realize that! But thanks for pointing it out! At least the next NBA lockout will last much longer! Howz this for an un-Jewish opinion: Reader Phil Glowatz: “Sterling’s mistake was that he didn’t rap his words as lyrics, throw in some N-words, reference women as b—–s and wh—s. Then he could have been invited to the White House to perform for the President.”

Only if the government (city, county, state or federal) is the ones trying to take it.

really? so i can take your property cus you said something i dont like.

hmmm i'll move to america and start claiming property :D

basically as i see it his he either gives up "property rights" or "Freedom of speech in privcy right"

And if the organization you have a contractual relationship with has rights under that contract to terminate your membership for cause. . . . . .

Still don't see it as freedom of speech. Sterlign is allowed to say it. Just as the NBA is allowed to break ties with him.

Gross misrepresentation of what happened. You and I have no contract with by laws. So if you just seize my property it is theft.

Also no one is siezing his property. They may try to force him to sell but that is different.

Actually, I'd say what is far more damaging in effecting people's thinking, especially the young and impressionable, is the words and actions of bigots, such as, say, you. I'd rather my children grow up listening to rap any day of the week than to spend extended time around a narrow minded bigot like you.

It doesn't matter how clearly you, Mushnick, or your man Dutch make this point, it's still a dumb one. You've clearly stated many stupid ideas on this discussion board over time. Stating them clearly doesn't make them any less stupid.

I'd rather my children grow up listening to rap any day of the week!

.....I'm sure, as a result, they will grow up to be fine, outstanding US citizens.....with a body loaded with jailhouse tats.....and a vocabulary centered around ho's, bitches, and 4 letter words of imaginable disgust!

lol these players will play against and with players who raped, dui-ed, assaulted, burglarized and committed all other crimes.
but they wont play for the estranged wife of someone who might have said some racist stuff

wow this world is pathetic

Magic says Clippers won’t play for Shelly Sterling — Magic Johnson said Clippers players won’t stand for Shelly Sterling retaining 50 percent of her ownership stake in the team and that if she does, the players will not play. Eric Prisbell of USA Today has more:

“Those guys are not going to play for anybody (named) Sterling,” Johnson told USA TODAY Sports and two other reporters at the Omni Dallas Hotel. “It’s just how it is. It’s hard to separate the two. … It’s going to be hard for them to sell that to the fans and definitely to the players.”

USA TODAY Sports reported on Thursday that Shelly Sterling intends to remain a 50 percent owner of the Clippers, even though the NBA banned her husband for life in the wake of his racist remarks that were tape recorded and released by the website TMZ. Shelly Sterling said she would remain a passive owner and does not want to be involved in running the team.

But Johnson said it is impossible to separate Shelly Sterling from her husband, even though her voice was absent from the audio recording. He noted past allegations about deplorable living conditions by tenants who lived in properties owned by the Sterlings.

“When they accused them of (being) slumlords, that was both, it wasn’t one person,” Johnson said. “It was both of them. … They will never recover from this. All the sponsors pulling out, they will pull out for good if she is owning it. It’s not going to be the same.”

When asked to characterize his level of interest in buying the Clippers, Johnson said he wanted to wait until the team is officially up for sale before he states his interest level. Johnson has said that he one day wants to own an NBA team.

“First of all, we have to all remember that that is a long way away,” Johnson said. “The board of governors first has to vote him out. Donald Sterling is going to fight it. You know that. It is going to be a long time.

“I have other things to do before I just say my level of interest. The team has to be up for sale. And I think that is going to be eight months to a year. Once it’s official, that it’s really up for sale, we’ll take a look at it.”

Looks like I am right about the bottom line being all this was EVER about. Inside the NBA pimping Donald Sterling exclusive interview on CNN. If the NBA was truly disgusted by Sterling, they wouldn't acknowledge him after banishing him. Turns out they were only disgusted by the financial hit they'd take if they didn't get rid of him.
