What's new

Lyles is the pick at 12

Jazz just drafted Thurl Bailey light. 6'11", lean and long. Great BBIQ, Terrific Character, Solid all around player but no standout elite skill. Good passer, good mid-range game He even wears #41. Trey's Freshman stats are better that Thurl's. Thurl was picked 7. If Trey can come close to Thurl the Jazz will have done great in picking a solid rotation player at 12.
Spot on bro. Great job.
I'm stealing this idea

Also both first names start with T

So we could even call trey lyles "Big T"

If there's disappointment to be had with this pick, it should be back when we won 1 or 2 meaningless games in the end of the season that cost the Jazz the 10th pick. Winslow and Turner would have been there for us.

Once we're at 12 and choosing between Lyles, Booker, Oubre and Dekker, I have no problem with this pick.

Still so happy about the Lyles pick and for once the Jazz picked my guy. There is no doubt in my mind he will be good. So much loving the prospects of watching a three man rotation of Gobert Favors and Lyles. They will put the league on notice. As some have alluded to him being soft or shy. Just watching his interviews. I'm not sure this is the case. I do see some Duncan in his personality. Not saying his game compares just personality.
This is how I felt about Hood last year. He was my guy last year I was super pumped for him. I'm warming up to Lyles. I like the Hanlan pick better though. A potentially good player at a position of need.

The press conference put me off to lyles. Looks like he slept in his shirt. No tie. Looked stoned. Sleeves pushed up. Didnt look like he wanted to be there.

Have to keep your expectations realistic. Utah isn't at the top of most of these kid's lists as preferred destinations. Give him a chance to acclimate.

Also, most lottery picks expect they'll see a lot of playing time. But some agents were steering their clients away from working out for Utah because the rotation is pretty much set. Draft picks are perhaps fighting for 5-10 mins/per.

Lyles goes from playing for a stacked UK team to a stacked UJ team. Unless/until he improves his shot, he'll be the fourth big behind Booker (barring any trades).

Come on man, that's not really fair. The kid has been in a whirlwind last couple of days. He actually looked more animated and engaged today than what I remember from his interview when he was here for workout and looked totally disinterested. Lets give him a chance to step on the floor before we start disliking him.

I got the sense that Dennis Lindsey didn't really care to be there either. Could be the 2 hours of sleep and the early-morning flight after working a 70-hour week maybe.

Lindsey said Trey Lyles had the highest score on a fancy balance test the team put the 100+ pre-draft workout participants through.
It's funny because Colin Cowherd said on his show today that star players have something they are elite at and he said Dwyane Wade's is his balance. Two totally different players and this doesn't mean anything in the grand scheme of things, but a pretty cool tidbit. He had the highest score out of 101 players.

The best players do have elite body control--the ability to move with subtlety and nuance that others can't match--whether it's subtle timing, unique angles, or elegant complete motions. That may sound like mumbo jumbo, but it's true.

When I look at players' potential, I look at how fluidly and intelligently they move.

There's a long list of examples: Kobe, Manu, Wade, Steph, Duncan, Garnett, Nash, etc.

People are saying Lyles isn't particularly athletic or explosive, but I'm not so sure about that. At UK he didn't have much room to move, and he wasn't in his natural position, so whatever athleticism he had was a bit stifled. Give him space and a few sets that take advantage of his abilities, and he might actually be a pretty skilled scorer in the NBA.

He's more naturally skilled than Favors, though he's not as long obviously.

On a related note, Exum still has the same high level of talent. Gobert is pretty remarkable for his size. He can euro-step and finger-roll. Burks has a lot of talent. And this new PG we drafted is more naturally gifted than Trey Burke.

Great find, Cy.

From the dude who wrote the article:

Listen, I was on record ahead of the draft that Trey Lyles to the Pacers would be a fantastic story, and a great pick. I believe my exact words on Thursday morning were these:

I'm pretty sure one of those guys, either (Willie) Cauley-Stein or Lyles, will be available at No. 11. Whoever he is, he better not be available at No. 12.

"Lyles was the guy, though. Seemed to play the right position, seemed to have the right skills. Definitely came from the right city. And the Pacers were impressed.

"We loved Trey Lyles," Bird said Thursday night. "That was a guy we were very, very high on."

But the Pacers are committed to giving Paul George minutes at power forward. Which cleared up what to do with the No. 11 pick."

This pick just seems to get better and better.

If he can handle the ball a little, pass well, and extend his range to the three eventually he will be great. All-Star? Probably not, but I don't think it's unreasonable to expect him to become a very good rotation player, plus as he's really starting to put it together he will still be cost controlled for a year or two as we begin to compete.

I love his demeanor, this is not a guy who will get flustered. You can call it indifferent, but I would say he legitimately sounds calm every single time I've heard him speak.

Excited to see Lyles, Hanlan, Exum, and Hood ball out in a couple of weeks.
