Man kills 4 in stabbing spree.

"Joyce is right about history being a nightmare-but it may be the nightmare from which no one can awaken. People are trapped in history and history is trapped in them."

This reminded me of something else James Baldwin wrote that I think you'll agree with:

America became white—the people who, as they claim, "settled" the country became white—because of the necessity of denying the Black presence, and justifying the Black subjugation. No community can be based on such a principle—or, in other words, no community can be established on so genocidal a lie.

White men—from Norway, for example, where they were Norwegians—became white: by slaughtering the cattle, poisoning the wells, torching the houses, massacring Native Americans, raping Black women.

I feel 200% safe where I live (a small suburb just north of Salt Lake). That said, at least a couple times a year there are break ins in my neighborhood. While my neighborhood is pretty safe, we live pretty close to a couple of really rough/scary/dangerous areas. I’m prepared to defend myself and my family.

What does it mean "rough, scary dangerous" by the Utah standards? A la is it 99% certain that you hear at least one gunshot while cycling through that area?

Thought that one was pretty obviously a joke. Guess not.

Its hard to tell. When you read people like heathme and npc posts and they seem to be scared of everything.

Im willing to bet that they read your post and then went to the store and bought as much beef as possible and filled up their freezers just in case.

I mean, it’s no Chicago or Detroit slums, but I don’t go do work there unarmed.

OK, if their is at least a la one dead body per week :-) and it is dangerous to work without bodyguard - aren't the Utah or Salt Lake City police departments kind of worried and at least doing raids most of the days?
Should we have the same situation in Tallinn - i think that journalists would ask some really tough questions from either the mayor or even the opposition members of the parliament might try to question or fire the government.
We had maybe little bit similar situations when we got independence, but the dead persons were mainly the local and Russian maffia members - we had so called Perm, Kemerovo, Chechen etc etc groups who tried their luck with exporting valuable scrap metals, stuff from the remnants of the Soviet army, racketeering, casinos, prostitutions etc. Thankfully the government got it under the control (took about 5 years).

Salt Lake, in general is very safe. According to https://www.areavibes.com/salt+lake+city-ut/glendale/crime/ the violent crime rate is 879 per 100,000 people. Again, very safe. The Glendale area of Salt Lake violent crime rate is about 125% of that. Still, overall, very safe.

The vast majority of cities in the US are very safe in fact. The anomalies are the large population centers. Chicago for example, new York, LA, etc. But you regular old run of the mill American City is exceptionally safe.
Agreed
