Quin Snyder in postgame said the team was actually told to foul when the Rockets hit the game tying 3, but Royce didn't.

I was so frustrated … was like how the hell is Quin this basketball genius and we aren’t doing the most basic basketball IQ move here.

This team is just so casual at times. It’s the JC fastbreak where he turns a sure basket into a turnover and layup the other way… the Donovan dunk layup miss… the Rudy layup that gets blocked… meandering under Matthews when you know he’s going to draw fouls… the way we close quarters is amazing too… we have 12-13 point leads and instead of stretching the lead to 15-16 we let teams cut the lead to 8-9 points.

The rockets played last night… tried to give up… but we refuse to let teams get blown out… we just get so cute. It’s lost is several games this year and is the difference between the 4 and 2 seed.

I would foul to prevent a 3PA
Of course that is the right move. So of course quin doesn't do it. (in his defense most coaches wouldn't foul there. Bunch of idiots)
I was livid that they didn't foul. I think you always should foul there but ESPECIALLY when the guy who had the ball right before wood got it was like 1-6 from the line on the night. Also wood, according to the graphic i saw, is the worst free throw shooter in the nba. The rockets suck at free throw shooting. On the other hand, the jazz have some really good free throw shooters on the court. Donovan is at 87%, Royce is at 80.4%, Bogey is 86.7%, conley is 83.5%. So a free throw shooting competition when we already have a head start would almost certainly result in a jazz win.
The rockets wanted a look at a 3. Dont give them one. Oh and they were hot from 3 all night.

Im still pissed about that.

Ah, I take back my rant then. Thanks for the info. It was the perfect situation to foul there.

What a **** alley oop attempted pass by JC on that fast break. Tried to get fancy.

The Jazz really need to put the ball on Conley’s hands for the last 4 minutes of the game and let the point guard play point!

Also, why doesn’t Donovan funk anymore? Watching him this year you’d have no idea this guy won a dunk contest a few years back. His first two years in the league he attacked the rim with a vengeance, but now it is all layups. Admittedly, he has gotten pretty good at those, but it would be nice if someone other than Gobert dunked the ball from time to time.

I think he funks less because he is trying to preserve his body. I agree Conley and even Bogey need more touches in the clutch. Mitchell has not been good this year for some reason. In the past he has been pretty solid though. Personally I would rather him work through his issues and be ready in the playoffs for the Clutch. But that doesnt mean iso over and over. We need the same looks he gets the rest of the game and he needs to make the pass to the open guy when he gets doubled.

The Positive:
- We've now won 3 games in a row in the clutch, and our first overtime game in a long time. This hopefully gives us more confidence moving forward.

The Negatives:
- I thought the Dallas game might have been a turning point in our clutch defense, but is looking more like an outlier.
- When Sengun fouled out of the game I knew it was not a good thing. He the only one we could leave open and rely on him to miss. Sure enough we gave up wide open 3pters as Houston played the same old attack our perimeter defenders and pass out to the guy Rudy was defending for wide open shots. The error Quin makes when employing this strategy is calculating a player's in game 3pt percentages. What he really needs for his calculations is their practice level 3pt%, because that is what we are giving up, practice shots.

Mitchell has not been good this year???? What are you talking about? He has been sensational, especially since returning from the concussion.

A few years ago I saw a replay of a Donovan Mitchell dunk in traffic and a zoom of the bench’s reaction. Everyone on the bench was going crazy except for Johnnie Bryant. He was shooting lazer beams at Donovan with and angry glare and a finger tapping his forward as he mouthed the words “BE SMART”. I think that is why Donovan is dunking less. The people surrounding him probably realize that players like DRose and DWill’s careers were cut short by reckless play and injuries. I only expect dunks when there is a clear path to the basket.

I think an unfortunate side effect of this is that Donovan has had to rewire some habits. Sometimes he wants to go back to his default and he can’t decide if he wants to dunk or do a layup, and the unfortunate result is what happened last night. I think last night he got surprised how open the lane was and realized he could dunk even though he was expecting to do a layup (my assessment could be wrong.)

As ugly as it is, it’s better than blowing and ankle or knee.
