What's new

Marcus Smart with the 5th pick

Also if nba scouts and gm's thought of smart as the next wade, we would have no shot at him cause he would be gone when we draft

If NBA scouts knew who Wade was going to be he would have been #2 in his draft.

Ok, so maybe he's an Tyreke Evans. A Tyreke Evans in his rookie year is a great player. And an Evans with Smart's drive and motor could be a great player who sustains his success.

I agree.

I was never saying smart sucks or we should not draft him.

My point was that the experts hve exum ranked ahead of smart by multiple picks, therefore they believe exum will be the better player.

If all we have to do is give up the 23rd pick to get a player that the consensus says is better then i think it is something we should probably do.....and at the least we should consider

smart has toughness and alpha dog potential and we need depth at the 1-2 position

I agree.

And according to the experts, exum will be a special player (maybe even a franchise changing star) and will also provide depth at the 1 and 2

I'd have no problems with that. Moving up for just the 23rd pick wouldn't bother me at all. Giving up one of the core and the 23rd and the 5th for a top 3 pick would also not bother me.

Realgm and other places are reporting that Sacto is looking to move the 8th pick because of worries about the cost to resign Isaiah Thomas. If you think Smart can play PG, pick Smart at 5. Trade Burke and the 23rd to Sacto for the 8th pick. Barring one of the top 4 making a crazy reach, one of Gordon, Vonleh or Randle will still be around at 8. Sacto does this because it solves their PG and salary cap problem.

I think I'm leaning towards Smart at #5. He can step in on day 1 and help this team with his elite defense. He doesn't necessarily need the ball to be effective too. He'd have his potential, but really help the team out still.

Prediction: Utah trades the #5 and #23 for Orlando's #4. Utah takes Exum at the Four and Orlando takes Marcus Smart at the Five.

This doesn't really make sense. If Orlando really wants Exum, they will take him. If they want Smart, they take him. How often do we see trades to move up ONE spot? Almost never because Utah has no incentive to trade picks away if Orlando really wants to draft someone else.

I agree. If we end up getting a coach with a more modern style, I think Trey and Marcus could work together great on the floor. It seems like their strengths could make up for the others' deficiencies. Also, for those who are worried about Marcus Smart being able to guard the SG position, think about some of the starting SG's in the league.

-Klay Thompson
-Kevin Martin
-Ben McLemore
-Bradley Beal
-Terrence Ross
-Dion Waiters
-Tyreke Evans
-Marco Belinelli
-Monta Ellis

Do we not think that Smart can play defense on other SGs as well if not better than these players? Is SG really a position to worry about that much anymore? Kobe and MJ are long gone.

He can bring toughness and leadership. People are saying he is too short, but dwade is 6'4 and smart is 6'3~6'4 ish. I am sure he can play both pg/sg. He can defend too. Jazz need someone who can speak up and carry the team, and I think he can do that.

His wingspan is what is most important.

At this point any of you could talk me into any of gordon/randle/vonleh/smart/saric/exum..... and i would also be ok with wiggins parker or embiid.

**** it..... jazz should just flip a coin to decide who to draft at 5 or trade down to 8,9, or 10 and just take who is left

We just suffered through a season where Garrett and JLIII were the top reserves at PG behind Burke (who struggled down the stretch too.) IF Dennis Lindsey and Co. decide that Exum or Smart are the BPA at 5, I hope they take them. You build around those types of guys. Let them compete with Burke. If they win that competition, you tinker with the lineup to get them both out there and/or play Burke off the bench. A backcourt of Hayward, Burks, Exum/Smart, Burke and Neto is miles better than what they've had the past 4 years. Keep your depth and have a talented, competent point guard on the court at all times. Fill the hole at SF with Hayward, the later draft pick(s) and/or through free agency.
