You guys are right. Utah is where most all the big name free agents are just chomping at the bit to get to.

Matthews is a much better player than Carroll. Carroll is a great bench player on a really good team. Matthews is a starter on a really good team. I want both:

Exum/Burke
Matthews/Burks
Hayward/Carroll
Favors/Booker
Gobert/our pick in this draft

That's a damn fine team. If Exum becomes an All-Star. That team competes for titles.

So it's either the most fought-over destination for superstars, or a wasteland that nobody would touch for a billion dollars? Why not stick to the reality of the situation? In reality, the Jazz had been able to acquire all star level FAs when they had the funds and the opportunity.

Carroll has been a pretty good starter on the 2nd best team in the league. I do agree Matthews is better, but I'm not sure who will be available. Carroll has ties to Snyder, but why leave the Hawks to possibly come off the bench. Prior to the deadline, I would have said no chance of getting Matthews, but then they got Afflalo. Does that signal they might not want to pay top dollar for Wesley?

Every time Utah has had cap space, they have had very good free agents sign with them. They were burned a couple times by RFA, but the players still signed here. They also were able to get some very good free agents here as well.

So, please, show me a time when Utah had gobs of cap space and walked away with terrible players, or were spurned by free agents.

They've taken a poll among NBA players before as to which teams they would like to play for and which ones they wouldn't. Utah is routinely very near the bottom. That doesn't mean there aren't exceptions to the rule, but most players grow up dreaming of playing for the Lakers or maybe their local team. It is all but guaranteed that in order for Utah to sign any significant FA, it has to be a situation where we can pay more than anyone else, and even then, some players will take less to play elsewhere. Obviously our odds get better once we're back in playoff contention, but when it comes to competing for FAs with all things being equal, Utah is close to the bottom of the league.

But what does that even mean? Surely Utah is as much a destination as any small-market team. You explained yourself by saying that Utah couldn't sign "superstars", which nobody is disputing. I agree that Utah needs to pay a bit more to compete with the appeal of larger markets, but that isn't much of an issue given the size of the cap space. Dismissing pursuing FAs because "noway they're gonna agree" is not based in reality, and despite what some wanna-be experts on here say, DL isn't pulling one on us when he says he'll try to pursue several big-time FAs. It is a legitimate possibility.

A lot of people were talking about it prior to free agency. It was known for sure, but not well known. If you kept up with national writers, you definitely knew about it. Even Locke talked about it a ton.

WSJ first reported that the NBA is seeking to a new TV deal at double the previous rate in July.
