Mike Conley Contingency Plan

That eastern conference thing was rumor/speculation/not confirmed.
I think it was also somewhat all-star oriented... Mike got his AS... his best shot at money and a title is in Utah imo... hopefully our goals align.

It may have also been about trying to land specifically in Toronto....

Anyway, I see no reason to hang my hat on that eastern conference ****.

Nobody is speculating that. Merely pointing out the huge luxury tax bill that comes with re-signing Conley and how trading Favors would help that significantly.

You think if you went to Smith and said we can pay a 48.75M luxury tax bill if we keep Favors or we can get that down to 10.5M if we trade him he is going to be like **** it pay the extra 38.25M to keep Favors.
He saved $33 million on Dons All NBA super max, I’d say he probably feels better about paying the tax now. It could have been potentially a $33 million more over the next 5 years of a tax bill, and he knew that when Rudy and Don signed their contracts.

Why? Its fairly important... the luxury tax to run it back and add someone at the taxpayer MLE is like $61M. We weren't good enough this year to make the WCF... how many owners pay $60M+ in luxury tax for a team that isn't consider a favorite?

If you factor in repeater tax issues/costs the following year it could be a similar tax just to fill out the roster and keep the crew together (minus Joe Ingles).

The tax will be an over arching them of the next two offseasons... as much as we'd love to say "don't worry about it... Ryan will pony up" I just don't think he is giving JZ a blank check here. There will be budget cuts... its basically a certainty.
The Jazz were good enough to win the championship this year lmfao. Just because some bad injury timing came up doesnt change what the team was. Obviously tweaks need to be made.

The Jazz local TV deal should be a lot higher in revenue as well. Smith has already began restructuring and trimming fat in different parts of the organization, the basketball part is going to be the focus of revenue.

Assuming we use the taxpayer MLE and retain Mike at a 18M a year deal... shedding favs for a minimum player saves us $76M between tax and salary over the next two years. I'll go with vet minimum guy and Udoka over Favs there.

Hell if I know… are you sure he isn’t? It’s in the eastern conference where he has said he wants to sign. It’s close to home if he wants to get back to Indiana.

Not that it makes a big difference in this context but Conley lives in Columbus, Ohio (which also happens to be the birthplace and formative years of one jazzVA although I haven’t lived there in over 40 years)

They were... I agree but they weren't the favorites... even after securing the #1 seed. I'm just saying this type of luxury tax bill is unheard of unless you have a super team or a giant market. Warriors and Nets this year are examples. Ryan gonna have to call all his rich friends to fund that bill.

Idk, the man spent $1.66 billion on the team, what’s $60 million lol. He’s considered buying RSL as well, so I think his pockets are still fairly deep. I also think the Jazz revenue stream will increase under him.

All I'm saying is that it wouldnt shock me if he did give a blank check for next year.
I would be shocked. Here is what the narrative will be though... If there is a deal that puts us over the top we will spend freely. No such deal exists or will come to fruition. Keeping Favs means that we are basically running it back with new minimum dudes... will pay $20M in tax to do that.

I hear ya.. but 1.66B for an asset is different than $60M as an expense. Its also like saying "hey we spent over our heads on this house... **** it lets build the pool too". At some point you get stretched.

I think it would be prudent to deal Favs to save the budget... will not fault him for doing so... especially if Mike is back.

As Tony has said, they want Mike back, and if the team flames out in the 1st or 2nd round again, expect a major overhaul. I think he will pay a huge bill this year, and if it goes bad again, it will be complete over-turn.

I saw Isiah Whitehead, Raul Neto and Yogi all mentioned as replacements.

Sure, but his company has also been breaking records on the market and stuff. I really think Smith will spend what it takes for the right moves this offseason. He wants Mitchell’s 3rd contract, and I think he’ll be quite aggressive over the next few years. Jazz local TV deal will be getting renewed and ratings were at all time highs. That should be a huge revenue boost. I know he’s trimmed a lot of fat already as well. I think you’ll see lots of changes to make the organization as a whole run more efficiently, and the basketball side get an influx of revenue use.

Tony also kinda laughed off the Danny Ainge rumors and kinda hinted that of course he isn’t coming because they will not be moving on from DL.

He likely pays a big tax bill but just because the company is doing well doesn’t mean he can’t cut $30M in costs at backup center. They will 100% spin it as opening up for one for Udoka. Just bookmark this post and when Favs gets moved it will save us some time.
