Mitchell injury

He may not have been cutting normally, might not be jumping normally. It could be small things, but after his fit he’ll be playing obviously and if he sustains a major injury or setback and your the Jazz medical staff, all you can do is feel like “don’t look at me”
They said he was fine though. If he wasn't doing things normally then put him on the injury report and list him as probable.

At least tell the team that he isn't doing things normally do they can gameplan and be ready for him to be out.

IIRC, our organization's staff let Memo destroy himself in the playoffs. I don't blame Mitchell for seeking outside opinions.

More generally, the Jazz staff has the goal of taking care of the players in a way that benefits the Jazz. Mitchell wanted people that were solely interested in taking care of Mitchell. That sounds reasonable.
That same year, Boozer was out for weeks with a knee issue until HIS team found debris in his knee and got him arthroscopic surgery. He was back shortly thereafter.

There were similar whiffs with AK and Korver but am not prepared to shoot from the hip. That team was baaaaaad.

I also seem to remember that the cortisone shot was comically ill-advised. Like, what happened to Memo is textbook contraindication to a cortisone shot.

Yes I’ll blame him if he gets a worse injury or a massive setback in the coming days/weeks. You all will as well. Golden States training staff was slandered a ton for letting KD play when he did and tore his Achilles. The Jazz sided on the side of caution for him here and now he threw a fit to get his way. If he tears his ACL and is out for a year you’ll all be crying they let him play too. Damned if you do damned if you don’t. Yes it could have been handled better, that doesn’t mean he’s ready just because he says he is. He isn’t a doctor, and he admits it still has soreness.
I disagree
If he tears an mcl then I won't be mad he played. I have heard of people tearing mcls when they didn't have any ankle issues. Even when they weren't playing basketball.
**** happens.

He is ready and wants to play, play him.

I’m not a medical professional, but occasionally do “fitness for duty” evaluations. It is incredibly difficult to predict how someone will respond in the future and therefore any warning signs should be given extreme caution. Being wrong can have serious, career ending consequences, for the athlete and the doctors.

If the Jazz medical staff saw something that worried them in shoot arounds they did the absolute right thing by saying so, even if they had previously cleared him to play. Having the courage to be wrong and change your mind, even if last minute or unpopular, makes a good health care professional.

This was definitely bad PR, and may have been bad for working relationships, but I have no reason to believe this was bad healthcare.
Why didn’t they see it before? He practiced for three days. Why wasn’t he in the injury report at all? If it is courageous to hold him out yesterday how would you describe it today when he’s been given the green light?

I get that we have to trust the medical pros... I really do, but if they didn’t have the stones to stand up earlier than game day they aren’t deserving of praise for standing up last minute. They should have done their evaluation earlier if a shoot around performance carried that much weight.

If the player felt ready and they had previously cleared him it just feels wushu washy and like they don’t understand how the timing could affect everything else around the team. Maybe they did it this way because Don was being a diva and it was the only way to ensure he had to sit... IDK but it got screwed up royally and 3 days ain’t gonna be the difference between “all clear” and “career altering injury risk”.

I’m just not gonna give any flowers to anyone involved here since it was a complete and utter **** show

That extra three days rest will be massive!

Not really - goes to show how much we need his offense when the threes aren't falling elsewhere.

They didn't list him as "probable" they just didn't list him at all.

If Joe ingles gets hurt tomorrow can we blame it on the medical staff for not playing Mitchell last night therefore making Ingles do more than he would have if Don were playing?

Exactly my point
If he isn't doing things normally then they should have put him on the injury report as questionable or probable or whatever due to the abnormal things.

But he wasnt wasn't doing things abnormally. He was fine. Hence no Donovan on the injury report.

No, because Donovan had a serious ankle injury which have proven to lead to worse problems if someone tries to push it too early.

As I've said, it is pretty clear his team was pressuring them to play him. The Jazz medical staff clearly weren't comfortable with it and I think were put in a difficult situation. Stopping him from playing hours before is not a decision made for no reason. In the words of Oscar from The Office

"Look, it doesn't take a genius to know that every organization thrives when it has two leaders. Go ahead, name a country that doesn't have two presidents. A boat that sets sail without two captains. Where would Catholicism be without the popes?"

Yes. You should take doctors medical advice especially when they are airing on the side of caution. You should. If he ends up injured in a week you gonna question them?
Let’s be clear... I will question everything. Lots of guys can get hurt when coming back from an injury... but more often than not guys can come back and even play through injuries without long term damage. If long term damage is the issue he shouldn’t have been cleared initially and should have had an update like he will miss the first round. At very least he should have been a game time decision... and let’s be clear... they said he did not aggravate an injury and there have been no setbacks.

Injuries happen... our playoff run this year is our best chance with this core. What if DM waits to come back and Mike or Joe get hurt trying to do too much? There are a lot of hypothetical situations and all of them carry risks.

No, because Donovan had a serious ankle injury which have proven to lead to worse problems if someone tries to push it too early.
But Joe has had to carry a higher minute load which puts him at injury risk... it’s proven hence load management became a thing.
