More death threats -- Woman take video of her walk through New York

Are some here really that offended that women don't like men catcalling them on the street? I asked my wife too guys, and she said it's annoying and she doesn't like it. See!

Look, men can hit on women all they want, and they do. Thing is, there's a time and place that many men don't respect. This is what I'm referring to. Walking past a girl and mentioning her *** is not hitting on women, that's meat head behavior. Going up to a woman, introducing yourself, buying her a drink, and treating her with respect is more likely to get you laid that walking by and saying "how you doin?".

Are we all so insecure that we can't admit that men are assholes often to women and that it should be discussed? I don't get why some are so defensive.

How dare I introduce a woman's perspective on it!! Especially one that doesn't agree with your take. She must be brainwashed. Quick give me the number to a womens rights group to set her thinking to that of a real woman!!!

I am fine with any opinion anyone has on it. You seem to be the most defensivly aggressive poster in this discussion by far. I can see why many women would not like it.

Wait, did some posters say that they were offended by women? I hadn't seen that yet.

I see no reason to be jealous of you.

It's not all or nothing. It's a matter of gauging mood and interest. I've struck conversations on trains, given an appropriate invitation. The first signal is often eye contact, which is often followed by various head motions that indicate interest or non-interest.

In this video, there is no eye contact, no interaction. Men just insert themselves into her life based on nothing at all but their own sense of male importance.

As for the rest of your post, the fact that she ran into even one dude that should've been MACED is a BFD. How often do you have run ins with people that should be maced because they are harassing you? Obviously often enough that it's not that big a deal, right?

Sure the guy was EXTREMELY persistent to a person who was not interested, but he didn't need to be maced. There was apparently another way for the situation to be handled, so I'm surprised you advocate the violent action.

Quit imposing your white culture on black culture... In all seriousness, this really is a cultural thing. I know quite a few people who speak affectionately to their spouses just like that.

Two things.

#1. Don't take bad behavior from a few thugs in New York freakin' City and try to project that crap on me as a man. I live in a decent sized city and don't see a whole lot of this. And, yes, ABSOLUTELY there is a cultural component to this. You want to fix it, speak to that culture, not EVERY FREAKING MAN in America. Of course trying to move directly to address the offending culture would be Racist. Soo. . .

#2. If only there were a set of codes and social norms that were passed down by society, especially from father to son that taught boys to honor, respect, and cherish women. That would be cool. Also, perhaps an impetus to step into situations where other guys are acting like jackasses and set them right. Oh yeah, we DID have something like that. It was SEXIST, remember? So we got rid of that because "defining roles" or something.

See that is the problem with this crap. If people want to target the actual problem areas with tools that actually work than let's get to work. Otherwise fricken' YAWWWWWN

#!. This happens in every culture in America, urban, suburban, or rural (see previous link). You don't see it because most men don't harass you.

#2. Your seem to think that harassment has changed somehow recently. You are wrong here as well. The more patriarchal the culture, the more it becomes about men protecting women, the worse it gets for the women when they don't behave as society wants.

Your prescribed tools have failed for centuries. Why would they start working now?

Holy christ. Guys. I posted my wife's reaction to show how individual opinions will differ. Just because you asked one woman about this doesn't make it right or wrong. Keep up dudes.

Why does my opinion make you guys so mad?

I was referring to Log's post about macing. I'm not advocating violence.

Key word: spouses. I talk about my wife's *** on the regular.

You could be right, but I think the choice of one particular bar over another is relevant also. For example, locally I would say a group of women at the Dandy Inn are much less likely to be looking to meet people than at some of the clubs in the Central West End. Place plays into context. It's not a perfect science, of course.

Even in a sex club, there still needs to be a give-and-take. I'm only talking about when it may not be harassing to make an initial approach based on no signals at all.

I read that. It didn't have a lot to do with my point. I know you talk as though you never interacted with people in a normal social way before, so sometimes it's hard when what people are doing is pointing to their very normal everyday experiences as proof and you want them to demonstrate facts in a way you can compute...but, I've been to parties and stuff. I've seen women go off with a guy who was puttin in work trying to get her to consent....

Didn't you read his post? Seems he's even been to sex clubs!

Very nice blog on the subject.

Writing a good comic strip is no guarantee of intelligence or understanding. Scott Adams has a lot of foolish opinions.

Also no one yet responded to my https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norah_Vincent post of a lesbian feminist woman pretending to be a man for 18 months and got clynical depressed and was happy she was a woman.

I saw no relevance to this. Why do you think it is relevant?

fixed.

And to answer the question.... I would feel pretty dang good.
It works be a nice boost to my confidence too

Don't fix it. I said men on purpose. I gather you are not intimated or threatened by most women, right? Fear and intimidation are the key components here. So I ask you again. How would you feel if MEN did this to you on the street with the same frequency?

If I were gay then I would feel great as well.

I like it when the sex that I prefer to be hit on by, hit on me. Always have and probably always will

The mistake you are making is that chivalry was primarily ABOUT women. It wasn't.
And as for "intelligent, progressive men are far less likely than others to engage in this type of behavior." Ya'll are the ones telling us that 1 in 4 women are raped on college campuses, no? Isn't that where a lot of "intelligent, progressive men" reside? Or is that a problem of the unintelligent progressive men.
Additionally the neighborhoods being walked through here aren't great hotbeds of Tea Party activism.
Overall, I give you attempt at moralizing a good solid C-.

Intelligent, conservative men also go to college.

Progressive men do harass. However, if you look at, for example, engineers vs. college faculty, women report getting harassed more in engineering firms than they do in academia. So, GVC is correct about it being less likely, although I'm not sure I would say "far less likely".

I said none of that. You just did and I disagree. I was just providing my wife's reaction.

I was being more aggressive last night. A Jazz blow out and a few scotch's got to my head. But my opinion stands regardless.

So we agree. Different people react differently in situations.
Why so mad? No need to put a comment like "keep up dudes." we agree.

tbh it's the messenger as much as the message. You're kind of an *******.

Ya, in this thread anyways. I don't think he always acts this way though

Did the men in the video ask her if she was straight before hitting on her?

Also, you're a big guy... you have no idea what it's like to exist in a threatening atmosphere as a small woman.
