But who are these 'criminals'? Often times they're just everyday people like us who make bad decisions.
If you're talking about serious criminals and gangs and such then that's what the police are for.

Is Oscar Pistorius a criminal? He's just another guy who's allowed to own a gun but decides to use that gun to kill his GF.
He wasn't a criminal until he decided to fire that gun.

Debate the point please. This idea that there are 'criminals' out there we need to protect ourselves against. The 'criminals' are none other than ordinary people who are allowed to own guns but uses them for criminal acts.

Wow. One example, and it didn't even happen in America. In addition, his girlfriend apparently forgot to carry her gun because as you say, it's not fair for him to have one to shoot her and her not to have one to shoot him back.
This conversation is pointless. The reasons you are claiming that people want to own guns does not match the reason that they actually own guns.
Ok but you can't say definitively that all gun owners have good intentions for owning guns... (even if the majority do have good intentions).

Oscar Pistorius actually had a history of using his gun in completely irresponsible ways. At a restaurant he was showing it off and "accidentally" fired a round. He got a speeding ticket and as he drive away he stuck his gun out the window and popped off a few rounds to demonstrate his frustration. He shouldn't have had a gun. At all.
OL old ladies can use guns effectively. In fact, they could use a gun far more effectively than they could use a bat or knife.

In fact, you must violate at least two of the four rules in order to cause unintended harm. No one should possess a gun without knowing and committing to those rules. Yeah look I'm not trying to step on anyone's toes here.. there are plenty of good gun owners and clearly you and Joe are two of the very best examples. In the perfect world every gun owner would known these basic rules, can handle the gun and use them safely and all have good intentions (i.e., for defense only, not to provoke).
All I'm saying is in reality the world isn't perfect. Not all gun owners can use guns safely and effectively. Not all gun owners have good intentions, all the time neither. Also I don't think we can pretend all gun owners are mentally stable... and so on and so forth.
Personally I'm confident that once trained I'd be able to handle a gun confidently and safely... But I do meet a lot of old ladies through my nursery daily and I'm just not so sure these ladies who are in their 80's and have arthritis & trembling hands can do it.
