Lot of koolaid being passed around right now. Lot's of it, for this kid Mitchell. Before we brand him with the title of chosen one, I have a concern: What if Mitchell is Marcus Smart 2.0? ugh! He's been exciting to watch! He does a lot well. He makes the ordinary into sensational quite often, but he has not shot the ball well. Tonight he scored 19 points... on 26 shots as I am sure you all know 8/26 from the field. How do you all feel about his shooting woes at this point? Because I am Concerned. I mean, in college he only shot like 40% from the field. We may just have the 2nd coming of Marcus Smart instead off the 2nd coming of Dame with defense, just fyi.

Discuss.

p.s. Gordouche Haywood is a douche.

He's the primary option on offense in the Vegas Summer league, that is not easy. He seems to be much more athletic that smart but not as strong. I like the potential I see in Mitchell and think he could be something special.

He really needs to work on shot selection and running the offense. But that should be expected. I expect him to improve over time and believe he's going to get minutes this season.

Lets hope for the best.

If you ask him to be a primary scoring option from Day 1, yeah.

He has a cleaner spot-up shot and better shooting mechanics, so he should be more efficient on open looks than Smart is.

Because Donovan Mitchell has Quin Snyder. Look at what Quin has done with Rudy, Wayward, Ingles, etc. Quin and his staff are very good at breaking down a player's game and then having that player work on just a couple of areas where they can excel. Once they've grasped those, it's move on to the next phase.

I have no doubt whatsoever that Mitchell is going to be a stud. Quin will rein him in offensively. And Mitchell's intensity and work ethic will make him successful.

He's a physically tough defender like Marcus Smart, Avery Bradley or Victor Oladipo, but he's much more agile than Smart and a better shooter than both of them. Offensively, he has Eric Gordon potential, maybe even better.

I have to say, I'm more impressed with Mitchell every time I see him. Every game, he's showing something new. Once he gets a chance to practice with the real guys and play with some structure instead of this summer league chaos, I think he'll show focused improvement very rapidly. I'm very high on Mitchell.

Quin coaches young players hard. This makes them tougher persons along the way but if they can't handle such discipline and harshness they break down ala Trey Lyles . We'll see how DM will handle it.
Dude looks very confident on the court. He is an alpha dog by nature. Honestly I haven't watched his game much. People say he struggles with shooting. Well, I kind of like his shooting mechanics..It looks smooth to me..? Shot selection might be an issue though. We'll see if he'll improve his decision making in Utah.

Exactly. Very very few rookies have a good shooting percentage. The key is to have the physical tools, the basketball intelligence, and the desire to work. Then you improve. Hopefully Mitchell has all three; to me I'm loving what I'm seeing so far.

Smart is a Bull. He's no slouch, looked good in the playoffs against Cleveland. Having said that, he's not near the athlete that Mitchell is. What I like about Mitchell is that he's a total Alpha like Smart, not afraid to get into people, yet he's not so top heavy and muscle bound as to detract from his quick twitch athleticism. Longer leaner, much quicker. As has already been said, his shot mechanics are really good as well. No worries here.

I've noticed that Mitchell is much more comfortable shooting NBA 3s off the catch than off the bounce. If he has to handle and create his shot, he's a better shooter from mid-range. He's still adjusting his dribble game to the NBA 3-pt line.

Look how comfortable Mitchell is shooting from mid-range off the bounce starting at 1:16 and again at 1:55. Marcus Smart can't do that.

Summer league is never indicative of future success.

Not worried about him defensively. He will find he'll have to be much more cautious on his shot selection once he's playing against the varsity team.

Yes, nearly every player in the history of the NBA is a better 3pt shooter off the catch.

Yes, Marcus Smart has hit dribble pull-ups before in his NBA career. He just misses a lot of them too, which Donovan Mitchell has also been shown to do.
