Mitchell has more upside than Smart because of his offensive potential. Unlike Smart he has an outside jumper which opens up opportunities to drive. We've also seen flashes of isolation scoring abilities from Mitchell with his stepbacks, dribble moves to create space, floaters in the lane and so forth. Smart struggles in these areas because defenders can just sag off.

Mitchell reminds me Wade. He just needs to improve his game a lot to get to that level. He has the potential though

I've actually seen studies that for young (freshman or sophomore) draftees summer league performance is more predictive of future success than their entire college career.

Anywho, Marcus Smart is a dang good player, and at this point I've got higher hopes for Mitchell than that, but if we wound up with a Smart caliber player at the 13th pick I'd feel pretty good about that.

I know I'm gonna get negged like crazy here but the Mitchell love is beyond ridiculous right now. I will say his defensive potential looks elite and his shot looks smooth but the kid has a lot of chucker in him and despite such a smooth shot, doesn't hit much. I don't care if there was no one else to shoot last night. That's a ******** copout imo. His mediocre shooting, good form or not, is a concern. Just like it was for a guy here for about four years. CJ Miles.

And I'm not gonna tell anyone what to feel about the kid. We all need some solace right now. But Christ, Kris Dunn looked like a sure fire hall of famer after summer league.

I remember seeing a statistic where it showed that Donovan Mitchell was a good spot up shooter at Louisville. Players like Rubio and even Ingles will help him get those open shots. Although I think his shot off the dribble will continue to develop and that will be an amazing tool for him to use. My only concern is his ability to draw fouls. Scouting reports have said that was his weakness and it is apparent he still needs to work on that.

It would seem he should be able to rectify this, especially as his frame bulks up... he certainly has the athletic ability to get into the teeth of the D. He uses the spin move a little too much in the lane which doesn't seem to help him get foul calls.

After Hayward leaving, I think JazzNation collectively is in need of someone better than Smart level.

I was there in person For the Kris Dunn show in Vegas. He looked ELITE.

Avery Lillard (aka Donovan Mitchell) has a long way to go to prove he will be as good as Smart defensively, but potential is clearly there. His shooting stroke is sweet so I'd be surprised if he does not become much better offensively. Completely premature and incomplete analysis.

the Jazz missed the trick by not picking Jonah Bolden as its 30th pick. Bolden is basically a top 10 lottery pick posed as a 2nd round pick because of his limited exposure.

This isn't a **** copout. This is a **** evalutation based off SUMMER LEAGUE. You said it yourself, the defensive potential looks elite and his shot looks smooth. That is all that matters, look at play style, moves, potential. Mitchell looks like a surefire NBA rotation player to me already. Also, we may have the best coaching staff in the biz to help with shot selection if you are legitimately worried about him shooting too much on a team where he is going to be the only NBA player other than Bradley.
