What's new

My frustration with this franchise is reaching a peak

What Marvin and Richard bring to the table is not that valuable. According to basketball-reference, Marvin's PER is 14 and Richard's 12.6. To put that into perspective, Jeremy's is 17.6. League average is 15. Even if you replace them with the likes of Garret and Clarke, you get 16.3 combined PER. That's a decrease of 10 altogether. Does that really make us go from where we are no to Bucks level?

Please not that I'm in no way suggesting PER to be authoritative, I just wanted to use one of the numbers that attempts to measure a player's total contribution to his team.
So. . . if it doesn't matter if Marvin and Jefferson are in the lineup. . . then it doesn't hurt the team in the short term to flip them for assets that may help in the long term while getting the young guys more minutes and young reserves like Evans, Gobert, Garrett and Clark on the court this season to evaluate them for next season?

That's more of the issue that most have with how things have gone. I'm an unapologetic supporter of the tank. . . but only at the management level. Players and coaches must do everything they can to win. Jazz are showing that the players are talented enough to do so. Not as impressed with coaching (but that's a different conversation.)

From DL's perspective, what can he do to get the most value out of this team? My opinion is that it's to acquire assets, give more minutes to young players and develop team chemistry and hire a new coach. Winning or losing this year won't change those things, just their priority. If they can get something for Marvin, Jefferson, Biedrins and Rush. . . they absolutely should do it ASAP. It won't hurt the team and it might just help.

Jefferson should be traded.

Marv should be traded, unless we envision him as a piece of this Jazz roster moving forward-- which isn't that nasty of a thought given his present production (I know I know, expiring contract).

Keep in mind, Jefferson HAS been mentioned in trading rumours. Dennis Lindsey isn't an idiot.

You really puzzle me GVC. You post how well they play together for a limited time together, then you question why we want to see them play together. Isn't obvious we want to see what are future could look like? By the way, I love your research post that are so informative.

I can't really agree with this. First thing is that the PER stat is not the most revealing stat(I know you mensioned it in your post) but let's use it anyhow. The mistake you made is you compare the PER statistic from players with 27.6 and 26.6 MIN to players with 18.5, 14.6 and 8.3 MIN. The first two are playing against starters most of the time and the other three are playing either every 5 games in garbage time or against 2nd string guys. There is no chance that you just replace the two guys and the team still wins at this rate. You're right the core guys are doing the most part of the job(which is really promising for our future) but even though they are "just" role players they are pretty good ones and really important for the recent success. RJ(53.4) is the 27th and Marvin(53.3) is 28th in eFG% out of 115 players who played between 20 and 30 MIN. In wins this numbers are even higher. RJ has than an eFG% of 65.6%(would rank him 1st!) and Marvin has an eFG% of 56.2%(would rank him 9th!).

To sum it up, the core guys are the most important reason for the wins. They are the first 5 options on offense and they are doing a good job. They are getting better each and every day and they are getting more consistent but without RJ and Marvin this team would be what the most people had expected. A good looking group of young players who need experience, one other piece and a good bench. Can't they win on their own? They probably could but they would start winning in the end of the season(what we all expected) when we already had one of the last three records.

I was ready to quit this team 3 games ago. Now I'm starting to believe in a group of young chumps under 23. I'm almost ready to offer Kanter, Hayward, and the two first rounders (our top-5 protected) for Kevin Love or something.

With Burks on-ball ability, Gordo being better suited to defend smaller wing players, Kanter and Favors best suited to play the 5 in today's NBA, and the board/fanbase wide hope for an elite athletic wing or forward, maybe the future could or should have Kanter and Burks coming off the bench, even if they're playing 30+ minutes per game.

That is, I'm buting less and less into the idea that the Jazz's 5 key young pieces all play different positions and complement each other that well. You have 2 5s, a point guard, and 2 wing players who can't handle the league's most physical perimeter players and arguably are best suited as primary or secondary ball handlers.

What exactly are the Lakers and the Celtics doing that the Jazz are not? In the sense of trying to lose more games? Are they not throwing the best players they currently have out on the floor, and are they not just garbage?

How exactly are the Lakers tanking? Moreover, when did they decide this? They were 10-9 just over a month ago. If they've been tanking since November, they weren't exactly doing a great job. The Celtics were in a playoff spot a month ago, as well.

The Lakers have lost Blake, Kobe, Nash and Gasol for a few games. A few other guys have missed games here and there. Once the Lakers get healthy they will start winning again. Celtics just got back Rondo so I expect them to start winning again. The Celtics have some talent but like the Jazz they are young and end up losing a lot of close games. I think both teams will finish above the Jazz. It is way too early to tell what draft position a team will have for the lottery.

PER is garbage. It takes boxscore stats, most of which are only accumulated by players with the ball, and somewhat arbitrarily weights them and spits out a single number. For players being asked to serve complementary roles, as off-ball scorers/spacers and defenders, it's absolutely useless. Marvin and RJ are filling those roles. Both are hitting shots at a good enough clip to keep defenses honest and create the space that Gordo, Trey, Alec, Favors and Kanter need to create and score on-ball. RJ's defense has been **** (IMO...dude ball watches a lot), but Marvin has done a decent job when not facing impossible matchups. They're both filling necessary roles very well. They are contributing to these wins.

I think the Jazz are still going to get a good player it might not be Jabari but I think they are going to get an above average player (s).

Anyone who doesn't think Jefferson and Williams haven't helped the team win (thus wrecking the tank) is either not watching the games or has no BB IQ.

We really won't know how well the core 5 plays together, until they start...playing together for major minutes. I agree that they might not compliment each other as much as we wish. Beginning of the season didn't count for me, because we had no PG, and it took time for our players to adjust to their new roles. Now that everyone is playing better than earlier in the year I think we should give it a try. There is nothing to lose this year, but lottery picks

Being your coach doesn't believe in outlet passes greater than 10 feet, Love would leave the coolest part of his game in MN.
