you have it backwards though. you don't develop a guy by giving him minutes he hasn't earned. you help him develop and THEN he gets minutes. burks had a 4-game stretch to show he was ready to make a positive difference and he didn't. again, that's fine. he's young, he's inconsistent, he'll get more shots and HE WILL GET BETTER. right now, he has no beef based on the way he has performed, and he understands that. you should, too.
What were those expectations?
Relax, ppl when the schedule becomes more "home" oriented Burks will see increased playing time. Right now playing the vets on the road heavy part of the schedule is the right move. Let's wait till the start of December to continue the Free Burks stuff.
The "Burks got 4 games to show what he can do" narrative is laughable and you know it. He played 7,9,14, and 10 minutes in that grand showcase. I can put up 4 game stretches of all our players who stunk in 4 game stretches.
Burks "problem" is that he doesn't fit in a 2nd unit that has to include Tinsley and Foye. He hasn't played his way out of a job. The Jazz have picked Foye to do the only job he can do. The question goes back to why the Jazz added Foye at all. It's not like he signed to compete for the backup 2. So what exactly was the plan for Burks all along?
"Jazz guard Alec Burks continued to make his case for an increased role next season by putting up 22 points, seven rebounds and five assists to bring his Summer League scoring average to 19.5 a game"
"Second-year guard Alec Burks stole the show with a 31-point performance in just 29 minutes of play. A minor contributor for the Jazz last year, Burks will force his way into the lineup with more efforts like this one."
Those were a couple of summaries of games in the orlando summer league
I don't know Duck, what were YOUR expectations for him?
After a poor first game Burks came back strong, and had a good summer league. The NBA TV guys raved about him, Corbin raved about him in interviews, and all seemed well. Remembering what he showed us in spurts last year I assumed that he would be apart of the rotation this year. Corbin stated early on that Burks had worked hard, and deserved to play, but that never translated to on the court playing time.
Your job as coach is to find a way for the talent to play. I see ways of using Burks at the 1, or having Tinsley benched, Foye take his spot(back up PG), and Burks start. 5-7 mins per half for Burks, and if he starts off hot keep him in longer.
This sounds like a serious post so I'll treat it as one. How have those vets performed on the road so far?
Burks isn't a good enough ball handler to be a PG. Foye has ONLY been good as a spot up shooter, also known as a shooting guard. He's been bad at playmaking.
He's ok in running the offense.
Uh, no, just no. Burks has only had 1 game over 15 minutes this year, which is the minimum time needed to get into the flow and make a contribution.
Seriously? There are lots of role players who routinely get 15 minutes per game and make meaningful contributions. It is up to them to be in a mental state where they are ready to come in and make an impact in 15 seconds. If this were really true, the nobody would contribute in the first quarter, ever.
Frankly, it sounds like you are just trying to find excuses for the young man.
Guys that come in the first quarter usually are playing with a set lineup they are familiar with. So far Burks has been brought in with all types of random lineups alternating between PG and SG. Even ignoring that fact, he has only played in one game over 15 minutes. He has averaged eight minutes in the rest.
