NBA Columnist/Cavs Insider Sam Amico: "Jazz have made Burks available"

Exceeded expectations? He hero balled well against summer league players.

What did you expect of him in summer league? to average a triple double in 25 minutes a game?

He went out and dominated and was probably the best player in orlando. And he didn't just play hero ball, he also passed the ball ok and rebounded the ball exceptionally.

"Jazz guard Alec Burks continued to make his case for an increased role next season by putting up 22 points, seven rebounds and five assists to bring his Summer League scoring average to 19.5 a game"

"Second-year guard Alec Burks stole the show with a 31-point performance in just 29 minutes of play. A minor contributor for the Jazz last year, Burks will force his way into the lineup with more efforts like this one."

Those were a couple of summaries of games in the orlando summer league

you have it backwards though. you don't develop a guy by giving him minutes he hasn't earned. you help him develop and THEN he gets minutes. burks had a 4-game stretch to show he was ready to make a positive difference and he didn't. again, that's fine. he's young, he's inconsistent, he'll get more shots and HE WILL GET BETTER. right now, he has no beef based on the way he has performed, and he understands that. you should, too.

The "Burks got 4 games to show what he can do" narrative is laughable and you know it. He played 7,9,14, and 10 minutes in that grand showcase. I can put up 4 game stretches of all our players who stunk in 4 game stretches.

Burks "problem" is that he doesn't fit in a 2nd unit that has to include Tinsley and Foye. He hasn't played his way out of a job. The Jazz have picked Foye to do the only job he can do. The question goes back to why the Jazz added Foye at all. It's not like he signed to compete for the backup 2. So what exactly was the plan for Burks all along?

Relax, ppl when the schedule becomes more "home" oriented Burks will see increased playing time. Right now playing the vets on the road heavy part of the schedule is the right move. Let's wait till the start of December to continue the Free Burks stuff.

This sounds like a serious post so I'll treat it as one. How have those vets performed on the road so far?

Not to mention, Foye was signed to only a one year deal. Doesn't Burks actually have a longer contract?

After a poor first game Burks came back strong, and had a good summer league. The NBA TV guys raved about him, Corbin raved about him in interviews, and all seemed well. Remembering what he showed us in spurts last year I assumed that he would be apart of the rotation this year. Corbin stated early on that Burks had worked hard, and deserved to play, but that never translated to on the court playing time.

Your job as coach is to find a way for the talent to play. I see ways of using Burks at the 1, or having Tinsley benched, Foye take his spot(back up PG), and Burks start. 5-7 mins per half for Burks, and if he starts off hot keep him in longer.

I don't know Duck, what were YOUR expectations for him?

I'd say improving in areas he was deficient.

Coach speak. Never listen to coach speak.

Burks isn't a good enough ball handler to be a PG. Foye has ONLY been good as a spot up shooter, also known as a shooting guard. He's been bad at playmaking.

Performed like crap. I'm sure if Corbin knew before hand they would be that bad and they would go 2 for 6 he could've played Burks more. Hindsight is always 20x20. since he didn't knew before hand how the road path would look like he tried to go with the experienced hand to try and sneak a few more wins. That's my guess.

If Burks doesn't start playing more once the schedule changes than I would be more inclined to listen more carefully to the Free Burks campaign. Until then I'm strolling along and thinking ppl are over reacting.

He's ok in running the offense. I don't think we'd lose anything with him playing over Tinsley, and Watson. Do you think Tinsley is a good back up PG?

Burks would make an awful point guard. I know you all want him to get playing time but fantasizing about him playing another position isn't the solution. Burks is not a point guard. Burks is not a point guard. Burks is not a point guard. Burks is not a point guard.

oh come on

Uh, no, just no. Burks has only had 1 game over 15 minutes this year, which is the minimum time needed to get into the flow and make a contribution.

Seriously? There are lots of role players who routinely get 15 minutes per game and make meaningful contributions. It is up to them to be in a mental state where they are ready to come in and make an impact in 15 seconds. If this were really true, the nobody would contribute in the first quarter, ever.

Frankly, it sounds like you are just trying to find excuses for the young man.

Guys that come in the first quarter usually are playing with a set lineup they are familiar with. So far Burks has been brought in with all types of random lineups alternating between PG and SG. Even ignoring that fact, he has only played in one game over 15 minutes. He has averaged eight minutes in the rest.

What is worse it that he has been playing small forward alot of those minutes with tinley at the 1 and murphy at the 2.

And in silesians post you were quoting he said that players ROUTINELY get 15 minutes off the bench and produce. Key word is ROUTINELY.

I dont think burks has logged 15 minutes in a game yet this year. If he was routinely getting 15 per game then i dont think there would be so much complaining about burks and his minutes.
