Netflix raising rates by up to 60% on 9/1/11

Well I am quite upset by this news. Netflix is splitting the instant streaming DVD services. Now if you want both, you will be paying 60% more. If they really go through with this, I will likely cancel my subscription all together. I had already been previously considering a switch to Blockbuster By Mail, and this may finally push me in that direction. Anyone else planning to cancel?

I've kept Blockbuster the entire time. No complaints although I will say the older I get the less movies I watch so I'm not exactly the most demanding customer.

I get new releases fairly quickly, free exchanges at any store (yes there are still some left). Up to 3 movies at a time. I'm still under $20 a month. Not a bad deal.

I'm thinking of canceling. Sort of. I have the 3 DVD's at a time and the streaming and it's going to run me $23.99 I believe which works out to five movie rentals/month at the typical Blockbuster/On Demand rate depending. To be honest, I really don't watch THAT many movies other than in the summer to warrant this so I'm not sure it makes sense to shell out nearly $300 a year. I think it's probably most wise to have just the streaming which I can watch via my Wii/PS3/Laptop. How's their streaming selection? Has it improved? I remember Kicky saying it left something to be desired.

The streaming still isn't as good as i think it should be, but my wife and i enjoy it and can always find something to watch.

Does the Blockbuster service let you rent a PS3 game for one of your 3 "movies"?

I see a few reasons why for the price increase

1. Greedy *** movie studios. The saw the great service that Netflix streaming had and decided they needed to up the licensing cost out the nose.

2. I believe Netflix said a while ago they were going to ditch the DVD by mail service within the next couple of years anyway. Streaming just makes more sense and is probably cheaper for them. So jack up the price on the DVD by mail and have everyone who was going to stay with streaming make the choice now.

3. Get more money to get a better streaming selection. Hopefully the case. But probably more the studios wanting to rip off consumers if they can.

I have Netflix and have literally used the mail in service twice in about a year... I had one movie for like 6 months and didn't even watch it.... as long as streaming is still in the 10-12 dollar range, I have no problem with this... especially if it means more streamed movies.

I have about 80 movies (most are not movies, they are TV series or documentaries) in my queue and none of them are available for streaming. I've been very disappointed in the selection of streamed content. I even have a Roku player and I use it a couple of times a month at best. If there isn't a tremendous increase in the kind of content I'm looking for I think I'll drop them.

I've bifurcated my Netflix usage in that I use the streaming service for television shows and the disc service for movies. This has historically worked out well for me because the selection on television offerings is quite a bit better than the selection for films. This is especially true if, like me, you determine that any netflix streaming film from the "Starz Play" library is essentially unwatchable due to quality issues.

The 60% claim is a bit exaggerated. I guess it's possible that one could end up with a 60% rate if they were on a specific plan (maybe one-out unlimited plus streaming?). I know on my three disc out plan with Blu-Ray the increase is up about 20%. In any event, from virtually any perspective the cost per hour of entertainment even for moderate users is quite modest.

Quit Netflix a year or two ago. Haven't missed it too much yet. Cable + Tivo has handled my movie watching habits more than adequately. Especially since Tivo can easily save to a computer hard drive (it's part of my home wireless network). I've got about 30 movies in my "Tivo queue" (i.e. on my computer, not watched yet).

I use one out at a time plus streaming, so 60% is no exaggeration for me. I only use the DVD to fill in the gaps of what's missing from the streaming library.

I do agree about the cost per hour value. Especially since they've been actively improving the quality of the streaming content. Hopefully this rate increase will come with an expanded library as many analysts are predicting.

I have 1 out at a time and streaming. I use the streaming rarely since there is mostly crap on there except some tv shows that I can get other places for free. I watch 2-3 dvds a month. I will definitely cancel the day the price change takes effect.

My P.O.S. computer doesn't handle the streaming videos worth a damn, so I never watch them. I might be the only blue-blooded male in Utah that doesn't own a gaming system that is compatible w/ Netflix. Oh well.

Many DVD players and TVs have Netflix capability. So you don't need a game system. But you probably already knew that.
