Never Trump

"Libertarian VP candidate Bill Weld gives up, will focus on preventing Trump presidency.”

Interesting article on Bill Weld, how, for the remaining weeks of the campaign, he will focus exclusively on attacking Trump, and how he will likely give up on the Libertarian Party after the election and instead focus on rebuilding the Republican Party.

I personally think that this is worthy of its own thread. Very interesting to see what happens when a person's conscience starts nagging at them, and Held seemed like the smarter of the two on the ticket. This was particularly telling:

“I have had in mind all along trying to get the Donald into third place, and with some tugging and hauling, we might get there,” he said.

These people think they will garner more attention and money by joining the establishment anti-Trump movement? These acts are petty an will backfire just like they did on Romney.

So facts and actual verifiable evidence don't matter to you. Got it.
Its so weird why people like you think the way you do.

Do you have any facts or evidence involving anything to do with politics? No you dont. You only know exactly what someone else wants you to know. Hook line and sinker. . You just havent figured that out yet. You arent honest with yourself or anyone else. Im just an honest Computer. I speak the truth.

Thank God you two can't procreate with one another and create some mutant troll that lowers the collective intelligence of the world population. I've seen four-year-olds with ADHD focus on one thing better. This explains the Trump love though. Birds of a feather...

I get the distinct impression, after reading the article as well as his interview in the Boston Globe and seeing him interviewed on television recently, that Weld would be endorsing Clinton were he not part of the Libertarian ticket. For example, Weld said he’s “not sure anybody is more qualified than Hillary Clinton to be president of the United States.” Bill Weld has seen Gary Johnson up close for many months now, it’s not surprising if he’s come to view the top of his own ticket as, to put it mildly, a bit of a lightweight and too unprepared to be president.

What Trump love?

I think that explains you.

Ive never once expressed any love for him. Where is your facts and evidence bruh? See how easy it is to believe whatever you want?

You live in fantasy land.

Trump is all but set to get at least 50 percent of Utah voters in November. The rest is divided amongst Clinton, Gary Johnson, Evan McMullin and Jill Stein, in that order. Trump will easily win Utah’s six electoral votes. Kind of odd that no one here (with the exception of babe, who despite being misguided on just about every issue under the sun, at least is upfront about his opinions and has the courage of his convictions) will admit to supporting Trump or argue on his behalf. As the article below notes, many Utah voters are simply lying about who they support for president. If you’re too ashamed to admit you support Trump, it’s not too late to understand that your shame is well founded, and that that alone might be a good reason to reevaluate your preference.

So when you get caught making stuff up you just keep it real short with meaningless goofy words as your response?

Sorry not sorry I cant be convinced to live in your fantasy bubble.

But I thought it's okay to just believe whatever makes us happy, regardless of whether our opinions have any factual basis. So what's the issue?

Fantasy bubbles all around!

I never once felt Utah would ever vote anything other than Trump. Last time Utah voted for a Democratic president was 1964, Lyndon B. Johnson, the president to win by the biggest margin ever (as perspective, Vermont voted for Johnson after 27 cycles of voting for Republicans). Get rid of him and its all the way back to 1948. After the shift with the Southern Strategy and the shift in party emphases, Utah has never elected a Democrat to the presidency.

It's also never even close. When an R appears after anyone's name in Utah, they get elected, period. Utah has elected Republicans in 12 straight cycles and are going for lucky number 13. I had hope that they would surprise me, but I never once really felt that this would be the year that the streak would end. Even when Trump's actions are this grotesque and Romney gives a spot-on speech against Trump, this changes very little. In fact, I will be surprised if Trump doesn't win by at least 15 points. The only thing that's swing about Utah is at the playground.

The issue is, I dont live in a fantasy bubble. I openly admitted I have no facts regarding whether or not that boy is Bill Clinton's son. I just said I hope its true.

Im the one being open and honest. Not these guys. They just make stuff up. You cant turn it around on me. No U turns. Its clearly posted on the signs. You broke the law. Put your hands up. Quit resisting. Shots fired. You are dead. Its your fault. Case closed.

In a story published in the Boston Globe, much attention was given to my grave concerns about the prospect of Donald Trump inhabiting the White House, and my determination to keep that from happening. The story did not, unfortunately, focus on my assurance that I believe Gary Johnson to be the best candidate for President, and that I would not be on the ticket with him if that were not the case. My Libertarian hat is firmly planted on my head, and will remain there.

Gary Johnson and I are committed to offering voters a way to break up the two-party duopoly that has given us policy paralysis and divisiveness with which most Americans cannot identify. If one of the results of what we are doing is that the two so-called major parties temper their hyper-partisanship, then so be it. That would be a good thing for the country.

Let there be no doubt. I am the Libertarian nominee for Vice-President, proudly running with Gov. Gary Johnson, and both Gary and I will be running hard and making our case right up until the polls close on November 8. Our ambition is to serve our country.

After such an open and honest interview with the Boston Globe, Weld no doubt felt compelled to issue some bromides to settle down the true believers. In the interview Weld intimated he is not likely to be a Libertarian for the long term, only that he wouldn’t “drop" the Party “this year". Weld is a placeholder in the Libertarian Party, not a convert. Once the election is over he said he looks forward to working with Republican leaders such as Mitt Romney and Haley Barbour to help rebuild the Republican Party.

This is a really nice interview. Weld makes a good case why Republicans should support his ticket: Trump isn’t a conservative, American based Libertarians are more fiscally conservative, favor free trade and a sane immigration policy, and have a more traditional, non-intervention, non-neocon based foreign policy. Weld is much more smooth and polished than Johnson. The Libertarian Party would be doing better with him at the top of the ticket. (Romney has said he most likely would have endorsed Weld/Johnson. No chance he endorses Johnson/Weld.)

Still, none of what Weld said to Tapper walks back on anything he said to the Boston Globe. In addition to bashing Trump, he talked about his future with the Globe, not necessarily the most opportune topic when you are in the middle of a campaign, and made it clear his future is with Republicans and not Libertarians. I can understand why that could be disheartening to hear for libertarians of all sorts. This election was their watershed moment. Now it’s all slipping away. No fifteen percent and no debates and if the downward trend in support continues, possibly not even five percent, the threshold for matching federal funds and automatic ballot qualification.
