New Orleans wants JAZZ name back

Neither the name nor the colors belong to New Orleans, so no, not ironic.

The idea behind the name does. Jazz is still played throughout the city on any given night (often for free and not just in tourist areas), and its not the colors alone, but that particular combination that represents a certain important aspect of New Orleans.

Also, many of you really hav eno clue as to why the team moved. It wasn't due to lack of support. Pistol Pete played for them back then.

If Utah can change their logo and colors for a decade, why not the name? Why did Utah change the colors and logo for so long in the first place? Any answers for that? Did Utah fans dislike those jerseys? I mean, its what they wore those NBA Finals years right?

BTW, during the game Friday, the local NO broadcast still showed the purple and white Utah mountain logo...:p

So...you're saying they're retarded?

If you haven't herd Tom Benson has bought the New Orleans Hornets and he wants to rebrand. Heres what he said in the press conference "We need to find a name like (Jazz)," Benson said, referring to New Orleans first NBA team that relocated to Salt Lake City in 1979. "Whether we can get that or let us use that, you've got to know we're working on it. We'd like to change it tomorrow. We have not gotten that approved, but we're not letting up on it, either. Because we've got a good relationship with the commissioner and his people and we're going to be on them daily to do something."

At the end of the day no name fits our city (New Orleans) better than Jazz and theres nothing Jazz about Utah. How attached are yall to the name would yall consider giving up the name? I know yall have had the name for the last 30 years but we had it first.

The argument that there is nothing Jazz about Utah is a weak argument. Benson is living in dream land if he thinks he can just use the name. If they want the name it will cost them Gordon and a couple of picks. This payment is for the New Orleans Jazz trading away the pick that would become Magic Johnson and for not supporting their team so they had to move to SLC.

I have mixed emotions about the name, but most long time Jazz fans are attached to the name mostly due to having to endure all the whining about how there is no Jazz in Utah so they should just give up the name. The reality is that there may be no Jazz (music) associated with SLC but the Jazz brand is a big part of the team's NBA history in SLC. If the only argument is that Utah doesn't have Jazz then maybe the league should correct all the mismatch mascot names starting with the Lakers because the fact is LA is a desert with no natural lakes nor are there Raptors running around Toronto or Cavaliers in Cleveland or Warriors in Oakland etc.

If the Jazz organization would agree to change the name I would suggest going back to the ABA team's name Utah Stars or the Grizzlies (Memphis has that name). Utah Bees would be stupid and the Hornet name belongs in Charlotte.

If it matters to you. I love the city of New Orleans. I am glad your team stayed there.

I highly doubt that the Utah Jazz would simply give the name back without getting compensation.

hey come on guys.. whats wrong with the utah hornets.. ive followed the jazz for all 33 years but iv always wanted a new name.. the jazz doesnt fit us and new orleans needs their beloved name back..

The Hornets name belongs in Charlotte. Is everyone missing the irony about New Orleans wanting their name back considering they are using the name they had in Charlotte. What has the Jazz done to deserved to have the name. Well how about being one of the winningest franchise the past 20 + years. New Orleans Jazz was never a premier NBA franchise. New Orleans was lucky the league stepped and to save your franchise. It would have been embarrassing to be the only city (that I know) to lose two NBA franchises.

I would really like to hear the "other reasons" why the Jazz left New Orleans. I think it was poor financials and weak fan support.

While we are at it lets fix the Lakers too?

What does Lakers have to do with LA? Are there any lakes in LA? They should rename the Timberwolves the Lakers. Just because it fits better.

Teams change their colors all the time (not the Lakers or Celtics but many of the small market teams do so the can sell more jerseys. Most Jazz fans never wanted the change and we are all happy they brought back the note.

I have an idea...

Since both Utah and N.O. won't make the playoffs, let's play an "exhibition" 7 game series. Winner get's to keep the Jazz name.
But seeing how the Hornet's have owned us this year...maybe that's not such a good idea.

No. Utah has the Jazz name. Period. If NO and it's fans do not like that then they can go piss into the wind.

Get over it.

Toronto Raptors?
Memphis Grizz?
LA Lakers?

There are a lot of names that don't have anything to do with their respective cities.

I love the jazz name but if NO put on offer of draft picks on the table like their pick for the next 3 or 4 years and say Eric Gordon. I would not cry myself to sleep at night. And the following 3 or 4 championship would help.

Although I think Utah raptors would have been a very cool name not to mention very true since there is a Utah raptor.

Fine. Make it a 3 team trade with Toronto.

I'm seeing Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, Foo Fighters, Jimmy Buffett.... and if you really cared about Jazz you wouldn't have Dave Koz.

Maybe you could be the New Orleans 'Palooza though.

Jazzfest doesn't really have much Jazz other than the Jazz tent. I go almost every year. Probably skipping out on this year just because I don't really have the money. Best big crowd performance I have ever seen was by Neil Young there 4-5 years ago, started pouring down rain as soon as he finished his set.

Probably has the best and most reasonably priced food of any festival.
