NFL Talk

Six years after deciding between Alex Smith and Braylon Edwards with the #1 pick in the 2005 draft, the 49ers now have both players. Pretty happy with the signing of Edwards, especially since it's only a 1 year non-guaranteed deal. Could turn out to be a great signing. The 49ers have made some nice moves this week. I'm excited for the games to start. Pre-season games are almost here.

Oh, THAT NFL. I thought it meant No Fat Ladies.

Good luck keeping him out of trouble. I understand SF has a great night life, which is what Braylon is all about. The odds of him getting another DUI or other alcohol related incident are very high.

Well it's a low risk, high reward situation. Here's a note about his deal: "49ers' deal for WR Braylon Edwards is $1M base w/no guaranteed money. He only gets full $3.5M if he catches 90 passes and makes Pro Bowl." So he has 2.5 million reasons to have a pro bowl year. Plus the fact that if he has a pro bowl year, he'll likely get a big multi-year deal.

I actually like the 'gamble' for Edwards and what it does for the team if he stays out of trouble.

Crabtree
Edwards

Decient combination.....

You'll still suck and the Cards, or maybe Rams, will win the division.

"If" he stays out of trouble? He's already on probation in 1 state, just finished up going through a DUI in another and is under invesitgation for a brawl he allegedly started in Michigan.

So you've got one guy who's most likely going to be missing some games once Gooddell gets ahold of him and the other guy is an injury prone, prima donna who has yet to even come close to reaching his potential.

But yeah, decent combination (sarcasm).

Again, what was said previously. A 'risk' but could pan out. Edwards, Davis, and Crabtree are 3 VERY talented individuals. If Harbaugh can pull them together (Which I wouldn't put it past him) they could be very productive as a group. Is it a risk, yes, but who was your 2nd WR after Crabtree?

That could be an excellent combination - could being the main word there.

I'm just confused as to why they were in position to take a risk on Braylon. Why not bring in Malcom Floyd? Why not address the obvious need at WR earlier in Free Agency when there were more options out there?

I agree with Floyd > Edwards but what I don't know about the Niners is their Cap numbers. I know the contract they signed with Edwards was only 1 Million Guaranteed with up to 3.5 Mil in incentives. Doubtful he will get the 3.5 mil and if he does then it is well worth it because they were lofty numbers if I remember seeing. Maybe they are closer to the cap and couldn't afford someone like Floyd. Then again I wouldn't think Floyd would be expecting a huge payday but could be wrong.

The last I heard the 49ers were about $20 million below the cap, but that was before the recent FA signings they have made. I'm pretty sure they are still a good amount under the cap, but not sure how much at this point. As for who the #2 WR was before the Edwards signing, it was Josh Morgan. After Morgan on the depth chart is Ginn. Ginn is more valuable in the return game than as a WR. I agree with what Cope has said about the Edwards signing. It is a good risk to take. Also regarding the brawl that was mentioned, the reports I've read say the police has stated that Edwards was not involved. That should be one less thing to be concerned about. Everything I'm reading is that Edwards will probably be suspended for 1 or 2 games.

I heard a radio report over the weekend (sorry, no link) that police are revisiting the investigation because more and more witnesses are coming forward stating that Edwards was the main instigator. Who knows whether that ends up changing anything or not.

As a Dolphin fan, I saw Ted Ginn attempt to play WR for a few years and he's just awful. Edwards could turn out to be a good risk, but you guys HAVE to get something out of Crabtee. Right now the guy is just an injury-prone punk who doesn't produce on the field. As a Ute fan, I think Alex has gotten a raw deal each and every year of his career thus far. I would love to see Edwards/Crabtree/Davis get all of their stuff together and help Alex achieve his potential but it doesn't seem likely.

I agree on Crabtree. I have been quite frustrated with him. He came in with so much hype after the draft, and then held out well into the regular season. If he wants to be paid like a top WR, he needs to play like one.

What no comments about how last week Phins fans were booing Henne and chanting Orton's name? I was in Vegas all last week and I just wanted to say it made me ashamed to be a Phins fan, I understand the frustration but it's not like Orton is a HoF or probowl or even top starting echelon QB, IMO he's barely an upgrade so it's not worth trading as many assets as the Bronchoes are asking for.

As well as how does it look taking arguably their top 2x offensive threats in Marshall last year Orton this year from a team (Broncos) that sucks just as bad if not worse then the Phins.
I guess I just don't get people sometimes.

I've never understood the love for Orton. From what I've seen of him, he's a borderline starting QB in the NFL. But then again, the second option in Denver ain't that great either.
