The Jimmer hate is overblown. Granted, the first time he came to Utah and his posse came out of the woodwork, that was uncomfortable and embarrassing. However, one thing few acknowledge is that none of these people are Jazz fans -- they're BYU fans. Perhaps an amount of selection bias but look at this board, for instance -- are there really any BYU basketball fans? In my experience, your average BYU basketball fan isn't a very avid Jazz fan, if at all. It's been a few years since Jimmer left BYU and a lot of those people part of Jimmermania have likely moved on to other places.
Anyhow, the idea that he's a bust is also funny. I think the problem we're running into is that you had the unrealistic movement (who weren't really Jazz fans) who viewed him as having a career trajectory consistent with his college career. It creates a very polarized view of him. I always thought JJ Redick was a good comparison for him, though everybody got pissed about that comparison. They both had pretty much identical numbers all the way through college. Redick was the guy I was hoping we'd land to play off the ball next to Deron so that we could actually get some shooting. We got Brewer, but I digress. Redick's first three years are essentially the same as Jimmer's have been. People called Redick a bust. Realizing what Redick is (and not assuming he's going to be an all-star or carry on in the same form as his collegiate performance), it's easier to see his value. Redick certainly doesn't suck and it's quite obvious he belongs in the league. I expect the same kind of trajectory for Jimmer and he'll eventually find himself playing a decent role on a decent team.
Bottom line is it's certainly not unreasonable for someone to want to bring in Jimmer for a minimum deal. If Jimmer played for Syracuse or Ohio State, there'd probably be about the same amount of people interested in him, just must less of a bitch-fest every time his name is mentioned.
/someone who doesn't care about BYU sports and thinks the BYU/Utah rivalry is the dumbest, most embarrassing thing about the state.
