What's new

Game Thread Oct 02, 2022 04:00PM MT: Jazz at Raptors (Preseason)

Added to Calendar: 10-02-22

A tale of two halves. Preseason, all new players in camp for a week so it doesn’t mean a hill of beans really. My concerns have more to do with the rotations, the personnel and the general lack of discipline and cohesion in the second half.

Concerning rotations, this depth chart seems to have more to do with the status quo than an actual fresh assessment. Will we have to watch two grand standers in Clarkson and Gay play big back-up minutes all year, or is Hardy only giving them enough rope so they can hang themselves? No trade will ever materialize for a 36 year old that doesn’t want to share the rock folks.

Personnel: disappointed in both Olynyk and Fontechio. No doubt we would have been ten times better with Bogey. Did Ainge really think that 27 year old Fontechio was the European sleeper that could provide everything Bogey did at a fraction of the cost? And then that 31 year old Kelly O would do more to help this team than Bogey could have? Wow!

Cohesion, discipline: nonexistent particularly in the second half but particularly evident with the iso play of Gay and Clarkson. Aren’t these guys supposed to be playing the role of mentors after all? And why does Hardy not offer some swift remediation for this insolence. (Don’t tell me you didn’t see Gay dribble down and just jack a three like he’s Curry or play Dr J on a dunk attempt in traffic or Clarkson’s Meadow Lark Lemon spot light impersonations.)

I think Lauri is your Bogey replacement. . .

FWIW (probably not much) I did notice that Sexton had the best +/- on the team at -5.
Also noticed the Raptors didn't really play a center tonight. Next game I might start Vandy/Lauri/Beasley/Sexton/Conley and let the chips fall where they may. It's not like Olynyk was doing much out there with an 0 for 7 shooting effort.

What, Lauri at the three and Vanderbilt at the four? Then I’m a bit underwhelmed with Vanderbilt as well in that starring role. Bogey at the three and Lauri at the four would have been absolutely epic. I mean assuming of course that Danny and Will were really intending to put their best foot forward this year. Because God knows (as well as Keef) we got jack for Bogey - and zero draft capital.

My opinions:

- Lauri looks capable as a primary scorer. We should all give him some time to grow in that role, as it's very different than he has been used in the past.
- I thought Sexton looked fine. Looks like he's still getting up to game speed, but he can make plays and hit shots.
- Kessler was disappointing as a rim protector. It was surprising how little feel he seemed to have on defense for a guy with his shot blocking numbers from college. He'll get lots of opportunities to improve.
- Vanderbilt was a little disappointing as a lockdown defender, but surprisingly good as a ball handler/distributer.

I won't comment too much on the guys who got in for the last 6 minutes of the 4th quarter. They all looked bad, but it's hard to come in 2 hrs after warmup and look good. That said, I'm not sure Butler could have had a worse 6 minutes of play. For a guy fighting for his spot on the team, that wasn't encouraging.

sad that agbaji's two buckets were offensive rebound layups. dude is a shooter, but nobody in that lineup was able or willing to find him behind the arc. grrrr. let the dude play with some of the veterans.

I would be really surprised if over the next couple games we don't see almost every player on the roster get the opportunity to prove themselves with normal game type rotation minutes. Those garbage minutes that we saw in the 4th quarter are the worst possible minutes for a player to get.

I think it's way too soon to be lumping Ochai with NAW, THT and Butler as a "crappy guard". The kid has a lot of potential.

Rotation wise, he is lumped with those other guys. If you want to call him promising or whatever, he’s still competing with the others and not winning that competition. Not yet anyways.

Pretty much this. Dudes really weren't even thinking about Kessler... think he will have an adjustment to make. I didn't hate his performance but thought things were way too easy down low for the type of player he is supposed to be.

Vando is basically who I expected. Nice hustle player... solid defender but flawed.

I will add Rudy Gay looked better moving around but he is a problem until moved/cut. Pulled up for that YOLO three in the second half and I thought - I'm good if they cut him rather than waste time improving his trade value.

Which trade is worse that one or the Olynyk one?
THT.

Dude is straight garbage.

But to consider that what we got for an elite efficiency/volume scorer (Bogey) and an elite 3&D PG (Beverly) is ****ing THT, Olynyk, and ZERO draft assets... it's hard to come to terms with.

This is especially troubling since the likely at least $14 million more on the books next year (most likely coming from THT if he doesn't get his **** together [he won't]) seems to be the difference in maybe taking on a longer negative contract for draft assets or not.
