Official Draft Thread

I don't have a problem with Whiteside's answers at all. He's being frank instead of telling people what they want to hear. He's not stupid.

Lakes have shores, right? I think there might be a lake or two in Utah. How much lakeshore would there be?

I realize that, but he obviously got the number wrong. Unless I'm being retarded (possible) there's no way that there is 147,000 miles of shoreline in the state.

Minnesota has 90K miles of shore line which is more than CA & FL combined. No way does Utah have 147K... not even counting Lake Bonneville.

lake powell has 2000 miles of shoreline - i'm guessing 147,000 was hyperbole related to one of the "facts about utah" he heard...

A three-question interview should determine the Jazz pick:

1. Define "jackpotting around."
2. Would you be offended by a coach constantly cussing and questioning your manhood?
3. Have you ever seen a John Deere tractor-pull competition?

Based on that, I think Coal probably has the advantage.

With the draft still a couple weeks out, my list of players I'd be happy with if we drafted them has grown. It now consists of Luke Babbitt, Gordon Hayward, Ed Davis, Hassan Whiteside.

Babbitt would be ideal assuming we bring in a guy like Brendan Haywood via free agency as well.

I too am right now leaning toward Babbitt right now. He's 6' 9", good size to guard anyone at SF or SG. He can score from anywhere on the floor. He tested very strong for size, so can battle in the post. Can put the ball on floor and get to basket. Jazz need to perhaps take BPA even if not a PF or C at this point at the #9. Not a clear cut winner available for a big man. Jazz need someone who can give impact minutes when on the floor.

I don't buy Babbitt's ability to defend NBA wings.

Babbitt's ceiling is Mike Dunleavy Jr., who was terrible during his first four years, had one good year offensively, and now is facing a career threatening injury. He has yet to defend a wing.

I disagree. Babbitt's much more explosive, at least from an initiating standpoint on offense. His jumping is a quick motion rather than a long-striding, deliberate motion like Dunleavy, Jr., at least in my opinion. The stats also back this up. Babbitt's max vert reach was 11'10" which for a wing is great (Favors is only 3.5 inches better), he ran 10.98 in the agility drill and 3.40 in the sprint. He also benched 15 times which is solid. Dunleavy's max vert reach was only 11'3" (seven inches less despite having 1.5 inches of advantage in standing reach). Dunleavy also benched less (13), ran just an 11.55 in the agility drill which is a lot slower for guys playing pretty much the same position and being similar in size, and did better than Babbitt only in the sprint with a 3.30.

Babbitt is a pretty special athlete really. Couple that with good size, good shooting (and good form), an ability to create his own shot, and being aggressive (6.4 free throw attempts per game) with getting to the line and then having the ability to execute once he gets there (91+%) is a hell of a combination.

I'm not saying he's a lock to be an NBA superstar but he's a lot less flawed imo than a lot of other guys in this draft.

My list is like yours except I'd swap Paul George for Hayward, and am on the fence with Henry.

Sounds like you agree with (former) coach Musselman, eh, Glass?:

"I often wonder why more teams don't use a team like Utah as an example. Utah drafts and signs players who fit Coach Sloan's system. The Jazz value intangibles like toughness and often-overlooked skills like screen-setting as an important element for their team to be successful."

Don't necessarily agree, but the FO is ultra-conservative. IMO, Jazz need to take the best player available who also has very good upside. Aldrich could very well be BPA, but IMO, he's very close to his ceiling. WYSIWYG with Cole. And I just don't think that's going to be enough to stop Gasol or Bynum. So you have to draft someone with better potential or make a serious upgrade at another position and hope to get a defensive center via trade (e.g. AK's expiring).

This is genius, you should be the new GM.

What does jack-potting mean? Is it what Brewer and CJ used to do with each other or something? What does this term mean? It surely doesn't sound right....
