I haven't been to a game at the U since 1988, so this is a serious question... what would the people around the guy be doing if the situation were reversed? (Colors reversed, score reversed, playing at Rice-Eccles.) Would the Ute fans be as good of sports? Or would they be pouring beer on the guy or something like that?

I'm sure he'd be pelted with ice, popcorn, etc.

On a side note, Ute fan has a rep for pouring beer on opponents and QB's moms, but I don't know where this comes from. They don't sell it at the stadium and I go to a lot of games and sit with a lot of drinkers and I've never seen anyone smuggle a beer into the stadium. Flasks and mini-bottles, yes, but never beer. Sure, there is beer flowing in the parking lot before the game, but if I was going to smuggle a drink into RES, it's damn sure not going to be a beer.

Are you suggesting Ute fans have poor sportsmanship?

The MUSS is only like 4 X 4 people so there isn't much potential to rile them up. At least I've never had problems. But I'm supremely strong and good looking, so it probably more of a testament to that rather than any discipline on the Ute fans' part.

They would get harrassed for sure. But I am sure this guy was as well. It seems weird to me that he seems to be sitting in the student section. I could be wrong on that but the others in the picture look a lot like students.

Except for the older guy in a blue button up shirt scratching his head standing next to what looks like a young female student. That guy looks like a professor to me.

I haven't been for a few years but I went to many games at both stadiums and I personally never received more then dirty looks and good natured heckling and light trash talk but then I wasn't obnoxious and only talked trash back when I received some (of course watched my language as there are kids around). Same goes for the opposing fans that I saw at RES, they'd get heckled a bit but nothing out of bounds, well except for one kid who had a throw back Steve Young jersery with a oversized straight brimmed Yankee hat on tilted and a huge fake platinum cross necklace and fake diamond studs in his ears, he didn't say a lot but drew attention to himself by looking like a tool and so a lot of heckles, left the stadium early, too bad for him cause it was the Harline TD game.

It's funny that so many BYU fans still play the "beer" card after Max Hall's comments. It just shows such a willingness to fall in line with whatever they've been told. As YB already mentioned, beer is not sold at RES and like YB, I have never seen anybody successfully sneak it in. Nevermind the fact that Max Hall flat-out lied about the beer incident (classy move btw), let's just go ahead and keep assuming that sort of stuff happens. Anytime BYU has won @ Utah, I've never seen news reports of beatings or any other serious conflicts. The fact of the matter is, BYU fans have been attending games @ RES for years, rooting on their team, and going home safely afterwards.

General rule of thumb: If you're going to wear opposing teams gear into an away stadium, be ready to take your lumps. While nobody deserves to be physically assaulted, you shouldn't get a free pass either.

What about if there was a fan like that at a Dodgers game of San Francisco 49ers game?

I don't believe everyone has had a chance to vote in this poll. Hey mods, how about re-stickying this for a while just to make sure everyone gets a chance to vote. I'm thinking about a year should be long enough.
