Official Jazz workouts thread

What was he saying?

That a player like Larkin is small in stature but in today's game where they don't let you touch another guy, he said the scouting department and rest of the NBA has started looking at smaller guards like this a little differently because there is more of them in the league today, because Dave Fredman said they use to look at bigger guards with more value but that's not the case anymore. And when asked about Dennis Schröder made it sound like what we were all thinking he has great athletic ability but he is still very raw everywhere else that he had a lot of potential but will have to work at becoming better because its there but it's up to Schröder to work hard enough to get there.

Offense is only 1 part of the equation though. Defensively you need at least 1 or 2 things:

1. Reach/wingspan

2. Bulk/strength

Larkin lacks both of those traits to succeed as a defending in the next level IMO.

Curry? He has length. Rubio? He has length. Lawson/Bledsoe - bulk & strength.

etc, etc, etc,

I'd be willing to bet that Larkin had about the same number of bench reps at the combine as both Lawson and Bledsoe. He may be diminutive, but he looks pretty built for his size.

I don't think it's all about bench reps, etc. It's like the Millsap vs David West comparison. You can't back down West, but you can Millsap.

jazz need a pure scorer. some one that can also bury a 3 pt shot but has to be respected driving to the hoop.

now lindsey might be different but in the past the jazz have liked players that rebound well for their position. the like players that are long for their position. from what I hear Lindsey is a stat numbers guy.

personally bazz and McCollum are the 2 players I want most. to be honest I don't want schröder at 14. I would rather trade down some and nab wolters at the end of the first and nab BPA at 14, probably a big.

Walt Perrin on Schroeder:

On Adams vs Enes

- Enes has more Int. experience
- Enes much better offensive player
- Enes more aggressive rebounder / Steven is pretty good..
- Adams still young, but good upside
- Performed well at workout
- Stepped out 15-18 feet and shot well
- "Intriguing"

The fact that Adams is being compared to Kanter at all says a lot, given that Kanter is a #3 pick with 2-years of solid progress under his belt. If you look at how much Adams has progressed in the last 12 months it's almost unbelievable. He's on a steep growth curve.

Jazz will draft Shane Larkin I have a feeling.

I don't. I think he's probably a last resort.

I think McCollum's the primary target. Players like Adams, Zeller, Shabazz would be taken opportunistically. I think Wolters is a 1-in-3 possibility at 21 if we don't draft a guard early in the draft.

I also have a sneaking suspicion that Gobert is a possibility at 14. The Jazz (Sloan) like big centers.

Remember, draft talk is often a:

Yep.

I think he's worth the "risk" at #14.

But I think Lindsey is patient enough that he won't get caught up in the hype. He won't trade up to get him. If he's gone, either Adams or Gobert will fall to us and I think Lindsey will take either one as a back up Center at #14. Then pick BPA at #21 (either Larkin or a wing who can shoot 3pt and defend).

This draft is all over the place. But if you have a clear plan in mind, all you have to do is stick to your principles, stick to your plan, and you'll get good value out of it regardless of what other teams do.

Agree. I doubt the Jazz panic and reach for a PG just because we have none on the roster right now. There will be a couple available as FA's. And Tinsley is good for another year as a backup. Jazz can go BPA with both picks, "irregardless" of the position. ;-)

did you just invent a new word there??

I'm glad someone put that in this thread. Those numbers are what I like to see. I like the fact that it is consistent from every angle. That is a good quality to have.

Does anyone know how good those numbers are seeing as he's doing that without defenders in an empty gym type situation?
This is one of his weaknesses in my mind his J is very stationary set shot. Yes, I no his 3% is good in the league he plays in. How will his three shooting translate in the nba where he will have less room to shoot with longer more athletic defenders. It's very telling to me that he struggles with his midrange game.

Nate Wolters rebounds very well for a point guard, and is tall for a point guard!

After listening to Dave Fredman on 1280 that's what it sounded like to me if you read between the lines of what he was saying.

I caught a portion of that interview from on top of a mountain somewhere aways SE of the wasatch front. It was good, but I missed the part about Larkin. Fredman talked more specifics about current jazz players strengths and weaknesses than Lindsey or KOC will.

One thing I learned....Jazz would like Hayward to take more of a leadership role. But he wasn't here this week working out with Favors, Burks, McNeal and Murphy. Evans is in town for Jr. Jazz. Where is Hayward while his teamates are working out?

Last night he was sitting in a room talking about the NBA Finals game 1 with David Locke on a google plus hangout!

And I am not sure this room was in Vegas because he is with the select team for the Olympics but when Locke said good luck in Vegas this week when he left.
