What's new

Official UofU homer thread

I think Hill needs to sit down with Kyle to talk about goals for the passing game next season and how to achieve them. Overall Whittingham has been a damn good coach but Utah's passing game is unacceptable.

Honestly without improvement soon I think we need to move on. We just can't be at the bottom of the conference year in and year out offensively.

On twitter, Ute fans seem to be bitterly divided, with a large segment seeming to adopt a "how dare you expect more out of this program" type of attitude and even some people calling for Ute fans to find a new team to root for if they dare complain about yet another late season swan dive.

Here's the bottom line: Whittingham is NEVER changing the way he operates this team offensively. We've certainly got enough of a case history to back this up. Regardless of who our OC is, he's going to continue to meddle, not develop a QB, and play the most simplistic offense known to man out of fear. I've honestly gotten to the point where I'm just trying to accept going to the Vegas bowl yearly and hoping that at the very least, we can continue beating BYU.

Well we made it back

My bro's friend sums it up - "we came, we lost, but we loved the beer!". if you go to boulder, hit up the breweries, it is worth it!

as far as the game goes, just missed chances, same deal all season. we were sitting right on the sideline and we thought for sure patrick was going to come down with that touchdown grab early in the game and make it a 14-0 game that would have been huge. felt like williams couldn't have thrown the ball better than that. what was up with patrick? just looked out of it until the 2nd half. you gotta hit on those plays too because you know that colorado was just going to load up and stuff the run. i can't believe the play call on 4th and 1. like are you ****ting me? that was the time to do some kind of play action, instead we run it up the middle and no chance, just horrible horrible play calling that's all you can say. if i have one wish it is to please fire roderick, this isn't working out, we need a better play caller to make our passing game legitimate. we haven't had a good passing game since joining the pac-12.

Those refs sucked hard though. I mean how many times were CU's defenders all over Utah receivers and nothing was called. Yet they throw a flag on Utah on a total BS PI. Get outta here pac-12 refs!

PI that was called, don't know what hatfield did wrong here

also the same ref threw the late pi flag on porter which prolonged colorado's touchdown drive. unfortunately there isn't a good replay on that one

refs actually blew two calls on this play

dude just straight up grabbed butler-byrd which slowed him down, nothing called
no_pi.jpg

marked him out at the 9 yard line, i don't think so

he did step out eventually up but more like around the 5-6 yard line

these refs were blind!

The lesson as always, pac12 officials suck.

You don't see what he did? He extended his arm on the player to keep him from making a move on the ball. A weak call, but proper one.

Basing it off that criteria, PI should be called on every pass.

If they had made that same call all game Colorado sould have been flagged for PI on 25 plays.

Well I didnt watch the game, but you arent allowed to do that as a defender. A lot of times in Football both the WR and CB will be jostle with each other for position and the refs dont call it if no one is going overboard, but in this one the only hands I see are from Utah. I think the ref would have held the flag but at the very end the Utah CB pushes off. You can see the Utah CB put his hand on the WR, then turn around and push off when he sees the ball coming to the inside.

The CB definitely had position on the WR. If the CB had tried to make a play on the ball instead of pushing off at the end, nothing would have been called. The WR did a good job of trying to make a play on the ball to sell the interference call. Was it a weak call, yeah, but the CB had no reason to use his hands, he already had great position, just make a play on the ball instead of holding.

On at least 6 different occasions the defenders from Colorado were holding the receiver's arms preventing them from raising them to catch the ball. None of them were called. That PI you claim was PI, the contact was initiated by the WR because the ball was thrown short, the defender pushed him after the ball was already on the ground.
.
That said I didn't blame the officials for this game. Pac 12 officials being the worst possible officials is just a fact the Utes need to learn to deal with.

Yeah, the other images prodigy posted looked like PI too, so if it wasnt called both ways that sucks.

The ball may have been thrown short, but the CB didnt turn his head to make a play on the ball. Ive seen several instances where the WR tries to make a play on an underthrown ball but the CB doesnt turn his head and just blocks the WR and it's often called PI.

Just my $0.02 but PI and the way it is/isn't being enforced in both the NFL and NCAA is making football damn near unwatchable. For me, football has always been the 1 sport that I can constantly watch regardless of what teams are playing. 5 years ago, I would have called you crazy if you told me that my passion for watching football could ever start to dwindle, but it certainly is. It's to the point where you can't even watch a DB defend a pass without anticipating the flag coming out. To make matters worse, it seems like refs will key on a certain team during a game and they can't even breath on the receiver while the opposing team can get away with much more physical play (and yes, I feel this way when I'm watching teams I don't give a rats *** about). It's gotten to be a joke and it's ruining the game.

If I was an OC, I would just run "Go" routes every damn play and not even worry if the passes are completed. You're probably going to get a flag half the time.

He was looking toward the ball before the contact by the receiver.

Before the gif? Because the gif starts he is looking down field chasing WR, he turns his head and sees teh ball, but that is before he puts his hand on the WR. After that he continues to run forward while holding him, and not making a play on the ball.
