What's new

Official UofU homer thread

I think it's time for Whit to move on. This late season collapse is now a yearly ritual. Not only that but in a span of a few short seasons, we've seen Mike Leach and Mike McCintyre take over lesser programs and IMO, get much more out of less compared to Whit. Hell, we could hire Leach away from Wazzu tomorrow. And why shouldn't we? For as long as Whit's here, we'll be that "plucky" 8-9 win team that plays really hard, is respected by everybody, but doesn't win any PAC titles and can't figure out how to develop QB's. Hell, we can't even win the South.

I get where you are coming from about the late season collapses but damn. Im shocked by this. I would love to have whittingham. I would love to win 8-9 games each year in the pac12 and get ranked #4 in the country and #11 country and have a chance at pac12 titles with just a couple games to go and even have an outside shot at the college playoffs.
Lost to cal by 1 (iirc) and was an inch short. Lost a very close game to a really good washington team. Lost by an inch on a desperation play to oregon (admittedly it shouldn't have been that close).

Hell, in yesterdays game if the utes would have just played whitt style ball (run run run) they would have won. Whitt gets criticized by fans a lot for running too much and not passing enough and yesterday he should have just stuck to his normal routine of pounding the ball.

If the utes let go of whittingham hopefully byu snatches him up the next day.

I think their talent level is higher than schools like Colorado and Wazzu and obviously lower than schools like USC and UCLA. I see where you're going with your argument so let me try and lay this out as simply as possible: Whit is a fine coach who runs a good program. He's also a coach who's never been able to develop QB's, has never been able to field a competent offense since joining the PAC, and who's teams routinely fade at the end of each season. If you're Utah, I think it's fair to start the conversation about what this program can possibly be with a coach that can actually recruit/develop Quaterbacks and run an offense that puts pressure on the opposing team.

Seems like some of you feel like Utah and its fans should just be content with what we already have. IMO, Utah can be better than that.

Good post for your side of the argument. Grass aint always greener doe.

Believe me, I totally understand what happens with the Utah program if they replace Whit with the wrong guy. However, I do not like the precedent of standing pat out of fear. I remember the uproar amongst Ute fans when they fired McBride. It seemed like we were a split fan base. How could you fire the guy who taught Utah how to win? The guy who taught Utah how to beat BYU? The guy who made it ok to expect to see Utah in a bowl game each and every year? While that was an amazingly difficult decision, history has shown it to be the right decision. All because Utah hired the right guy.

While Utah will never be as good of a job as a USC or UCLA, I honestly believe that it is underrated and can be a top 20 job in the country. Utah should not stand pat out of fear or familiarity. If Whit is kept, it should be done so because he can sell Chris Hill on a vision of how he plans to fix the annual issues that are keeping this team from winning the PAC South. He shouldn't stay because Utah is afraid to fail on the next coaching hire.

I still look at this way. If the utes could get a yard at the end of the cal game (not whitts fault imo), and the refs call one of the three illegal blocks in the back on the washington punt return td, and the utes stop oregon on 4 and 10 from the 18 with 2 seconds left... or the refs dont overturn a questionable call (imo there wasn't enough evidence to overturn) then the utes are ranked #2 in the country right now.
None of those things are whittinghams fault imo. In the call game he made good calls at the end there. The roll-out pass play should have been a TD and then he tried to punch it in with the run game which is the ute strength. The players didn't execute. (in fact on the final play of the ute game an offensive lineman totally missed a block and the running back went to right into the the unblocked dude when he could have went left for the td)
Whitt isn't a ref to its not his fault that they missed 3 blatant play/game changing blocks in the back on the punt return td in the washington game.
Yesterday was the one game that whitt probably should have done what the fans usually blast him for and just went ulta conservative and pounded the rock in the run game. That one is kind of on whitt (or maybe its the OC) and some bad luck and the refs overturning a call that maybe they shouldn't have.

Point is he has recruited the talent for them to be able to be undefeated right now and ranked in the top 2 or 3 in the country even despite all the injuries (there have been a ton) and a player retiring and coming back even.

If the utes were undefeated right now and ranked #2 would people want him gone? How about last year when they were ranked #4? were people calling for him to be fired then?
Plus he has dominated byu.

And just for the hell of it, i want to say again that the pac12 refs suck.

You guys need to get your **** together and win one for ol' SC on Saturday as repayment for all those early season collapses that made you guys look like you had a chance to win the South over the years. That window is closed until 2019 now, but who knows, once they flub up their next QB transition until they find they next All-American, could be hope for a year down the road, before it closes again until 2025, etc.

Its not necessarily standing pat out of fear, but standing pat cuz there is no clear upgrade.

Who out there would you want?

Sucks cuz I obviously want to beat Colorado but the last thing I want to see is SC in the Pac 12 championship...

i just don't get how roderick still has a job, let alone a important job

From a utefans post-
I think Kyle is an excellent football coach. The following is a general observation on my part.

We don't seem to attack our opponents vulnerabilities. We seem intransigent in our game plans, married to the singular idea of what we want to do, seemingly blind to what would give us a greater chance for success. We have a solid coach who is not showing to be opportunistic as a strategist.

I wonder how successful would Coach A be if he was freed from the "play to not lose" yoke?

As always, I could be wrong. This is my impression.

I'm not calling for Whitt's job, honestly think we could win next week and still go on and play in a good bowl game. Just very frustated that we will miss out on another pac-12 cg

Agreed and my post was just in general, not directed at anyone in particular. Very frustrating indeed but we're getting close.

OK. Now that I've had a chance to breath, here goes.

OUCH.

Fire Whit? **** you. No ****ing way. He does a great job with the talent he gets. And who the hell would we replace him with? Are you serious? There is no Urban Meyer out there right now. Hell, there is no Kyle Whittingham out there right now.

Fire A-Rod? Abso-****ing-lutely. Yesterday. It's time for a big-boy OC who won't be so damn predictable and keep running plays that fail time and time again in the SAME DAMN GAME. A-Rod called the plays, and couldn't get anything going. It's just time for him to go.

Teaching people how to tackle and wrap up is on the position coaches. I have never seen so many missed tackles. It was a travesty.

Watching WSU-CU replay. WSU couldn't stop the QB run, which was a problem because CU ran Liufau, a lot. So much so he got banged up a bit but came back in later.

We have to have sure tackling against them. Which is to say we have to tackle a whole helluva lot better than we did vs OU.

CU's DB's probably impressed me the most. Held Falk to just a 49.1% completion rate, really impressive considering he averages over 70%.

It's going to be tough, they have a lot of momentum heading into the game. One thing we can't do is beat ourselves, we have to play mistake free football.

Joe Williams may be the most down after the OU lost but we need him the most this game.

Going into the game CU had a long losing streaks vs ranked teams. Let's hope we can start a new losing streak for them.

This is uncharted territory for the Buffs. See how they respond if Utah comes out pissed off. I will be traveling to the game, my first true road game experience for a pac-12 ute game.
