Official Utah Utes Football 2012 Thread

Wow, some of you guys should work for the White House, since you can spin anything pretty good.
You got worked by the Aggies. Worked physically...by a WAC team when supposedly I heard sleeper PAC-12 title talks. I agree as a fan you take it as just one game and look ahead and stay optimistic, but come on. You got PUNKED by little bro man...

The more I think about it, the more I think the right thing to do is start Hays this game. Do we really want Travis Wilson learning the ropes right now? I realize that if we were to pick a game left on our schedule where it's ok to lose or do less than well it would be this one - better to lose to BYU than one that counts for something in conference play - but Hays is more than adequate and we have time to bring Wilson along.

The only benefit I see is if Whitt is planning on starting Wilson for Arizona State and USC. If that's the case, start him now as this is kind of the equivalent of a preseason game and it will give him some good experience. If not, then go with Hays.

And your point in regards to how it effects the upcoming Utah-BYU game?

Last year it took a deflected TD pass from Riley Nelson for BYU to squeak by USU at home. This year BYU has beaten a Wazzu team that barely snuck past Eastern Washington last week and Weber State. Obviously, Utah hasn't faired much better and has a ton of question marks moving forward. IMO, neither team is sitting pretty right now.

Obviously, BYU is currently in a better position, but my hunch is that Utah comes out and plays well (even if they're missing John White). I see a lot of BYU fans getting a little ahead of themselves. It's going to be a very competitive game.

And on a side note, I'm absolutely THRILLED that BYU cracked the top 25 heading into this game. While it's just a mental thing, I think it helps Utah with the "dog backed into a corner" mentality. A talented team coming off a bad loss, with their hated rival coming to town sporting a brand new ranking.

It is interesting how many BYU haters jumped off the WSU bandwagon.

Some moronic hater in the BYU thread said this:

You may want to focus on beating Wazzu in week 1 before making that proclimation. All trash talking aside, I think they will be causing teams problems this year. Mike Leach is the mad hatter of college football and he's actually inheriting a team with some really nice offensive weapons. They've got some really nice WR's on that roster and a couple of good QB's. Add to that the fact that Mendenhall teams seem to start off slow each season and I think BYU could find themselves in a dog fight week 1.

Both BYU and Utah are lucky they're both getting this team on their home fields. I think Wazzu has a few upsets in them this year.

BYU beats WSU easily.

"Nevermind, WSU sucks."

I owned up to that prediction over in the BYU thread. Either you haven't seen it, or intentionally left out that part just so you could do your normal little song and dance (predictable as ever). I vastly overrated the immediate impact Mike Leach would have at WSU. After seeing how badly they struggled against Eastern Washington, it was even more evident.

You got me big man, I was wrong about how dangerous Wazzu would be coming out of the gate. However, it doesn't change the fact that they do suck, and BYU has achieved a ridculous top 25 rating based on wins against 2 really bad teams.

Enjoy the ranking for the next 5 days. It won't last long.

In all seriousness, I'm enjoying the smack talk. A victory over BYU is even sweeter when it sends that team and their fans crashing back down to earth. This would seriously be no fun at all if BYU was 0-and-2 and not ranked. I can't wait to see the following happen on Saturday:

-Utah beating BYU, thus knocking them out of the rankings.

-BYU fan scrambling for excuses.

-BYU fan making reservations for San Diego and getting their Poinsettia tix a mere 3 weeks into the season.

However, I would like to see a close game. In fact, considering the late start time on a Saturday night, I'd like to see it go to 3 or 4 OT's. That would make it close to midnight and would put BYU dangerously close to facing the predicament of Sunday play. Would they continue to play the game? Would the simply walk off the field at 11:59 in order to avoid sin? The prospects are just so juicy I can barely contain myself.

I'm really not sure what the point of this post is. I think you're projecting. You seem to have a preconceived notion of what Utah fan is thinking (I don't know where your loyalties are, but this is a common folly amongst the BYU faithful) and it will not be hampered by any of the actual discussion that has occurred.

Most of the Utah fans here have been pretty realistic, I think. Complimentary of USU, concerned about the weaknesses of the team as presently constituted. I don't recall any PAC12 title talk in the last few days. Do you expect something different? Are we delusional for not immediately throwing our hands in the air and declaring this season a lost cause?

Great post.

No need to make excuses for the USU game. Utah got beat. Plain and simple. I guess some BYU fans will flame the Ute fans that don't throw their hands up in disgust and declare it a lost season already, but that's par for the course. I'm sure Cougar fans would love it if Utah and their fans panicked and decided to pack it in for the season. Hell, it would make life a lot easier for them. However, this won't be the case. Can't wait for Saturday!
