The game last night was a blast. It was the first time this season that I have been at the game, and I always have a better "feel" of things when I'm at the game. Some thoughts from Corvallis...
1) Our defense is really good, and it's a shame that the offense is letting them down. They gave up two touchdowns that were more or less gimmes because of field position. They would be a great defense if they could make a stop on third and long. Our inability to make stops on third downs is infuriating.
2) I'm optimistic about Wilson, however, the game needs to slow down for him. He stares down the receivers and he telegraphs where he is going to throw the ball. If he were to incorporate a pump fake or just look away from his intended target it would do wonders. With that said, Wilson can throw the ball well... he just needs to throw the ball well to the right guy at the right time and place.
3) Play Calling seems to be erratic. We are either overly conservative or we are razzle dazzle. I feel like our offense as a whole is lacking an identity.
4) The Beaver crowd was really into the game. I was impressed with the atmosphere. For the most part I was surrounded by great fans. However, there was one guy there who 'heckled' me by using obscene language and gestures, he did this non-stop and it was getting tiresome. The rest of the Beaver fans told him to knock it off and apologized.
5) Utah has no presence on the road. I thought we would bring some rally support in for the road game, but we did not. No band... no cheerleaders... no flags... nothing. In fact, the "Ute" section had a lot of black in it. And I'm pretty sure I was one of the only Ute fans in my section. I was surrounded by a sea of black.
6) Turnovers absolutely killed us in the game, extremely frustrating. We need to hold onto the pigskin.
7) If anyone ever goes to Corvallis for a game, remember to get there early... parking is relatively cheap (15 dollars - 40 if you go to the one by the stadium) but it is sparse. I killed fifteen minutes driving around the backstreets looking for a parking spot because the lots were full, and I didn't want to spend forty dollars.
8) The trip was so much fun that I am debating making a second pilgrimage to Seattle on the 10th of November... I had a Huskie fan in front of me tell me that the atmosphere is even better in the Northwest.
