Olympics Thread

Yeah during the game when US was down #LeBronze was trending in Twitter and I think it was mostly used by Americans.
That is kind of funny though. Haters (and I’ve been one in the past) should just shut up already. His play in the 4th quarter was legendary at any age. . . much less pushing 40.

Dude at my work who said he was varsity track and field in high school was talking about how good he was.
Said he held his high school record on the 100 meters. I asked if he remembers his time and he said it was 9.88 seconds.

I looked up the world record of all time. Bolt ran it in 9.58. Tyson gay ran it in 9.69.

There is no way this white dude from Utah ran it in 9.88 like 35 years ago right?

First white guy to run under 10 seconds in an official race was Christophe Lemaitre in 2010 and first human ever to run under 10 seconds at sea level was Carl Lewis in 1983. First race ever with 2 guys running under 10 in the same race was in 1991.

So yeah either he is bullshitting or it was stopwatched (and misclocked) or something.

Thats only legal results ofc. Some massive wind result could have easily been sub 10.

I did find the hashtag hilarious especially since they play in France, but the hate is weird.

I'm a Jordan GOAT guy but i'm not gonna fight anyone over it. Its obviously not an exact science.

I think it's because US audience sees players as primarily NBA players (with the cultural encouragement to pick favorites and non-favorites). We rarely think of them as national team members -- or at least that's a far, far secondary consideration in the way we form opinions about them. Their Team USA participation is seen more as a novelty than as a feature of who they really are.

This cultural inclination may change with the greater international competition, though probably slowly if it ever happens.

Bogut was saying on his podcast today that FIBA want to pull basketball from the Olympic schedule and just leave 3v3 basketball as an Olympic sport. They are apparently dissatisfied with the commercial impact the Olympics has on the World Championships and the IOC doesn't do any profit sharing.

Kind of makes sense. It's not like anyone cares about Olympic Soccer(Football), so it is kind of weird that we have these two international basketball events. Basically only America places the Olympics over FIBA Cup, so it creates this weird dynamic given the fact America is the most important basketball country

Football generates the most revenue for the host countries and outside of North America and Australasia I believe it is one of the most watched television sports, so broadcasters get to cash in . I also have a hunch that basketball is probably one of the most watched Olympic events and it lasts a couple of hours so plenty of ads. I'd not be surprised if the IOC is making an absolute packet off it.

I think for us the Olympic medal means more that the world champs, Ask Lauren Jackson if she'd swap her world champs gold for Olympics i reckon she'd do it in a heartbeat.

FIFA was pretty smart making it an U23 tournament, the youth world cups draw crowds of 10-15 thousand, Olympic football is generally played to full houses. Making it a youth event protects their top products like the World Cup and the various confederation's cups.
