Open Carry?

******** you say. If an intruder is trying to get into your house they want to do so as quietly and unnoticed as possible. The second that large dog starts barking they have lost the element of stealth and surprise. They also don't know what type of dog they are facing. Unless they have targeted you specifically for a very specific reason chances are very high that the intruder stops and goes elsewhere. No sense risking getting bit, having the cops called or at worst, getting shot because the homeowner has been alerted.

Right!

The overwhelming majority of the time someone breaks into your house it is for some sort of material gain. They do not want to shot you, even if they might if they feel cornered. They certainly don't want to contend with a dog and an alerted homeowner who may have called the police and may be armed. They want to slip in, grab something valuable and get out. If they are completely unnoticed then they did a good job of being a burgler. If they get the stuff and have to high-tail it out then they've only done a mediocre job. If they get noticed before they get the goods they have done a bad job. However, if they get in any sort of shoot-out, which draws a hell of a lot of attention then they have failed. If they get hit by a bullet then they are as good as convicted because you can't get a bullet-wound treated without law enforcement wanting to talk to you. If they know you know they are there and you have a gun then they most likely just want to get the hell outta there. All the talk of stopping power is meaningless. Buglars don't charge you after taking multiple gun-shots. They try to flee to avoid going to prison.

According to the statistics on this website (an anti-pit bull one to boot), I'm probably over paranoid about dogs attacking owners. Only about 3000 attacks over the last 20 years with the majority non-fatal. That's really low compared to crime rates.

There are breeds that are fantastic with kids. Labs and golden retrievers in general. I'd also recommend shelties. I grew up around dogs all my life. We'd ride the big ones, lay on them, sneak them into bed...a good dog (usually what you make the dog) is a wonderful thing. They are usually as loyal as the kids parents. When we wanted to go somewhere my mom made us take the dogs on a leash and she wouldnt have to worry. The dogs saw us kids as their own and were extremely protective.

This. You are worrying about trained guard/attack dogs. Most of us are talking about family pets that have been raised with the kids that bark when a stranger comes around..

Not really. I'm not scared of having a large family dog.

This started out as a dog as a replacement for a gun. I don't need a dog large enough to potentially replace a gun inside the house with young children. I see one as an piece of overall security but one that is not right for my family at this time. I do think a dog is a much better deterrent than a gun that nobody knows you have and very likely couldn't pull out in a delirious, just woken state anyway.

That is what it started out as but quickly became a good dog as a vluable part of home protection. Another warning system.

As for around kids it was protection. I had total faith that if a man hit me as a kid the dog would rip him a new *******. Hell if a man even raised his voice the dog got displeased.

Ohh, get one of these, Trout!
