So recently there was an article in the SLTrib about the Salt Lake City council urging people not to give money to panhandlers. I personally never give to panhandlers and am opposed to it in general. I posted my views in the comments section and was challenged by someone there to join them in a day of panhandling. I accepted the challenge on the condition that we start at my childhood home 1145W 355S SLC and walk, as I have done many time as a child, up 4th South and over the 4th South viaduct to Pioneer park and decide where to set up shop from there. It's almost exactly 1 mile from my childhood home to Pioneer park.

Anyway, details to come. The person who challenged me wants to make a video and publish our collection totals and I assume document the experience. I'm looking forward to it.

Very interesting.

Didn't ready the article but I have a question.

What do you plan to do with the proceeds? Just going to pocket it or is a charity or something going to get it?

I'll donate them somewhere. I figure I'll give them to the road home or some other homeless care charity.
 
... so what's the challenge, and why would you want to do this?


I'm not trying to be a smart ***, I genuinely don't know, but am mildly interested.

I was basically called an insensitive jerk by many. This particular person said I was misinformed since I indicated that some people panhandle as a profession. She believes I will be enlightened (and maybe I will be) by walking a mile in the shoes of a panhandler.

I'm going to do it because it will be a life experience. Also because I was challenged and judged and I'm going to meet that challenge and correct the assumptions about who I must be because I don't give to panhandlers.

Are young going to"bum" yourself up a bit? Like wear ratty clothes, not shower for a few weeks leading up to this, bring a small child or dog with you, maybe sit in a wheelchair?

I have some old semi-worn out T shirts and such. I'm not going to go out of my way to look homeless, just wear some stuff I'd wear around the house on a weekend while doing chores.

I plan to be make a sign that basically says "Please help a Navy Vet -- Anything helps"

I would not have. Good for you for doing it, getting that life experience. I make sure I don't have cash on me to give pan handlers, so I think we share a similar attitude there. But it just doesn't make sense, to me, to go panhandling to understand why people are pan handling, or understand why we should or should not give panhandlers money.

Keep hydrated man. It's frickin hot this summer.
 
I may not understand fully what your plan is. Are you going to sit at the corner of a street with a sign? Or are you going to sit in Pioneer Park amongst the homeless? To me, those are potentially very different things. I personally don't give to individuals in either scenario, but make a yearly donation to The Road Home (although I'm probably changing my donation to The Inn Between).

There are absolutely professional panhandlers.

That's really deceitful of you. I'm pretty sure everyone will expect you to spend it on heroin. I for one would be really pissed off if I gave a panhandler money and later found out that he didn't spend it on heroin. If I wanted to donate money to a charity, I would. Do the right thing, get yourself some dope.

I believe booze and drugs are the traditional way to spend the proceeds

Bit of a stretch saying hobos fund cartels, Vegas pool parties, Hollywood celebrities (Yes i'm talking about you Donald Sutherland) and the Rolling Stones maybe.

Anyone who works in downtown Salt Lake can verify this. The same people will be working the same areas for years on end. You can watch them from your office window look crippled and broken, then see them round the corner and be completely normal once their "shift" is over.

I watch the drug seekers at work do the same thing, the waltz up to the front doors get within about 3-4 meters then put on their shtick, hobble up to triage and try to sell their tired arsed ****. I miss the old days when they used to do things like self harm in order to get drugs, dudes who burn their legs and ask the doctor as we're throwing em out how long they've got before they'll lose it. Ah the good old days...
 
There was a panhandler outside of a Panda Express one night and my dad bought the dude a 3 entree and a drink plus tried to give him a $20...dude broke down and cried and said he hadn't had a real meal in 4 days and refused to take my dad's money because he said was going to spend it on drugs and didn't want to disrespect my dad who fed him. **** was a surreal moment.

There was another time my dad bought a guy some food and the guy had the balls to tell my dad he needed money not food and my dad nearly killed the guy lol
