Paris under attack

probably best if we leave space to the space aliens!

And I'm not sure which I'd consider a bigger threat - terrorism or global warming. They seem too different to compare.
Bernie Sanders was asked to choose and he said the choice is clear. He made the opposite choice I would.

and aside from the religious fanaticism that drives some of the terrorists' behaviors, I think there is a lot of money, bribes and corruption in high places that keeps most of the population poor, frightened and angry and leads some of them to revolutionary ways of life

and I haven't had a chance to watch the Frontline video yet (it sounds incredible) but I also think a lot of folks get caught up in the movement not because or fervent religious beliefs, but because they have no choice - - they either go along or they (and their families) suffer - - they're in a "kill or be killed" situation
100% correct. The Frontline piece shows all of this clearly.

just watched the Frontline video...

such beautiful children...

aside from the fact that the translator often sounded like the voice in those xtranormal animations (and unfortunately, that made me want to laugh at times), during the scenes with the children, in my mind I kept hearing these lyrics "Jesus loves the little children, all the little children of the world. Red or yellow, black or white - they're all precious in his sight. Jesus loves the little children of the world."

May god help these little children.

What's an xtranormal animation?

Yeah, it rips the soul apart watching those kids. They look so innocent as they sit there being transformed into monsters. I'm certain many of them have the most tragic of stories. Parents murdered, kidnapped, and now they have no one to turn to except for their evil instructors. Sickening and frightening.

Wow is that true about Jesus leading their army?

Well, I guess the religion itself recognizes Jesus as a great prophet. But I'm not up to speed on what role the bad guys think he plays. I have looked at ISIS up to this point as a grab for power. The creation of a caliphate. Recreate an Islamic empire of some sort. That article I posted was the first I've come across an effort to describe the power grab in terms of a greater prophesy. And if that greater prophesy has Jesus leading them to victory, well that's part of an insane belief system I guess. After watching Frontline's ISIS in Afghanistan, I'm more then ever convinced they are insane. I did not grow up in the same faith these guys did. But, overall, it is one of the three major faiths stemming from the same region and same wandering desert nomads thousands of years ago. And all three of the faiths that originated there seem to have spokesmen that seem insane to me.

I'm reminded of the American "preacher" who claimed the Paris attacks were God's way of punishing the sinful French. Is that not as sick as it gets? In the instance of that "minister", he was really aligning himself with the terrorists. For the terrorists, Allah demanded they kill infidels. And to that American minister, his God approved of the Paris attacks. To the terrorists of IS and this American minister, somehow their respective faiths are fine with slaughtering innocent human beings. This Abrahamic tradition, or whatever you want to call it, has unleashed violence and harm throughout history. The Crusades. How the heck insane was that? The religious wars of the 16th and 17th centuries. Pitting Catholic against Protestant. A loving God? Way too often the adherents of those faiths seem far fonder of hate then they are love. How many millions of human beings have been slaughtered throughout history at the hands of other human beings acting according to what they think God wants and expects of them? If I were from another planet, observing the Earth and human society over time, I would conclude that humans were a deeply flawed species. Watching from orbit as people slaughtered people in large numbers here and there around the globe, I'd conclude "well, this didn't work out well at all. This is a failed species of "intelligent" life".

The reporter felt what he was seeing meant the war would never end. The documentary I posted by Vice News shows how they do the same thing in their IS as well. Train the children early. The Frontline piece mentioned how ISIS now has "branches" in 9 countries. Assuming they brainwash the children in every area they control, it is easy to see how very scary and worrisome that has to be. The cancer analogy is apt I think. It's as if they've metastasized from an origin in Syria/Iraq and are popping up too rapidly elsewhere to possibly keep up with. The Frontline piece said they might have 1000 members in Afghanistan.
But their asymmetric warfare and training of the next generation insures they will plague that one nation for years to come. Compared to the size of a traditional army, and the arms and armaments of the United States and other nations, they seem like a fly we should be able to swat. But it doesn't work that way. Instead, they seem capable of bringing us to our knees. Amazing what a relatively few insane people can do to destabilize the entire world.

A couple things that struck me in that video:

The children's instructor seemed kindly and gentle, soft-spoken and patient. (though then again, I guess it was actually the translator's voice)

does anyone ever hug the children? Do they get tickled?

As far as Jesus goes, he is the second most important prophet in Islam, always has been. If Mohammad hadn't come along, they might all be Christians. Or Jews.

In that Vice documentary, we see a father smile lovingly, it seems to me, while listening to his young son decide between jihad or suicide as his fate. You could hear the instructor's voice in the Frontline video. He did seem and sound kindly.

I knew Jesus was the second most important prophet. What I didn't know is that some at least apparently believe Jesus will return to lead them to victory in an apocalyptic battle.

It seems like we should just have a logical conversation with everyone involved and solve these problems. Why destroy each other over something like this? Humanity is on the cusp of such enormous accomplishments. Technology is on the verge of sending us to live among the stars.

Let's set aside our differences and work toward common goals. But the religious nature of the situation literally makes logic invalid. From the zealot's perspective we must destroy one another because that's what some books written thousands of years ago apparently said we would eventually do. So stupid.

Muslims believe that Jesus will return to lead God's armies against Satan's in the apocalypse.

If there was an a species out there with the intelligence, resourcefulness, and cunning to have attained the level of resource control and technical complexity required for interstellar travel, then rest assured they'll have their own baggage.

It's funny that so many assume that while we're just a "flawed" animal species, any other that evolved on a different planet will have been born all-knowing and enlightened. What a strange people we are.

true...

same goes for those who believe that "God" created us in his image...

I guess that means either he's flawed or we're perfect; there are just things for which there's no rational explanation

Interesting set of chess moves between Russia and America right now.

Russia is adding 40 nuclear missiles to its arsenal.

U.S. is looking at placing tanks, artillery and F-22s into eastern Europe.

Russia sold 24 SU-35 fighter jets to China.

NATO just formally invited Montenegro to join.

Russia is creating a 2nd airbase in Syria and sending surface to air missiles there. Reports of increased number of Russian troops in Syria. Russia has placed electronic jamming units in Syria.

NATO is about to vote on which "package" (no specifics) to implement to bolster Turkey's air defenses. Britain has said it will place fighter jets in Turkey after the vote. Spain has Patriot missiles there.

Russia broke a missile treaty with the US banning medium range, land based ICBMs (INF Treaty). They have developed and tested said missiles but not deployed them yet.

Russia is discussing the sale of their S-400 anti air missile systems with China.

America and Russia are building up their artic capabilities.

So basically Russia and America are turning into real rivals. Any front they can bicker and posture on they are.
