Penn State Pedophile Controversy

The more I read, the more angry I get. This is as bad as it gets.

Who would of thought that this is how JP was going to go out? Everything else he ever accomplished goes out the window IMO. From now on, when you think of Joe Paterno, you will immediately think of this incident.

what about all the others who witnessed things that seemed inappropriate over the years (high school coaches for instance) or the board and director of the Second Mile group who were apparently told about many of these allegations along the way. And the folks at the state agency who investigated the initial allegations.

It'll be interesting to read more about why they took such a hands-off approach in 1998, at that time Sandusky was still employed by the university. That's where it could get really uncomfortable for the Penn State officials.

There is plenty of blame to go around to a whole bunch of folks, including the head coach.

Plenty of people could have stepped in and stopped this. Too bad they didn't. But after how much media attention this has received, I hope people who do witness these things will realize what the right thing to do is, no matter who does it or where it occurs.

A few of you whom I got to know a little bit on the old board know, but for those who aren’t aware - I live in Pennsylvania and reguarly attend and support Penn State athletics. I’ve been attending Penn State football games since I was 8, and the program has been a large part of my life.

I have always viewed Joe Paterno in the highest-esteem possible – and up until last March - I had placed Jerry Sandusky on a pedastal below only Paterno’s. Like everyone else, I was appalled and disgusted by the results of the investigation, and the response by the university has been nearly as disheartening.

Legally Joe Paterno did the right thing by reporting the 2002 incident to his superior. Ethically and morally, I – like many others - wish he would have done more. The lack of response by the university and their unwillingness to allow Paterno to address the matter only furthers the perception of guilt. There is a major black hole of reported information from what Joe Paterno claims he knew, to what the grand jury report on the assistant who witnessed the crime claims to have seen, to the ambiguity of what information was actually relayed to Paterno. That NEEDED to be addressed – by both Joe Paterno and Presidant Graham Spanier ASAP, and it hasn’t.

The story of the grand jury investigation originally broke in March – but the recent indictment has completely caught the university off-guard. Their entire response has been a disaster. There is no way to effectively manage tragic accusations of this nature – but Penn State has handled it about as poorly as they possibly could. There is no leadership whatsoever, and rumors, opinions, and speculation are running amok.

The fact that 7 years went by without questions on the 2002 incident being raised is unforgiveable – and someone (starting with then-AD Tim Curley and VP Gary Schultz) must be held accountable for it. The fact that the graduate assistant (a State College native, former quarterback and well-respected assistant coach) who actually witnessed the crime with his own two eyes never followed up or called the police himself is even more unforgiveable in my opinion. The fact that the president of the college – Graham Spanier – issued a statement last Saturday in which he gave his “unconditional support” to both Curley and Schultz (who were legally obligated to report that incident to the authorities and didn’t and were also charged with perjury) is reprehensible. And if Joe Paterno indeed had full knowledge of the nature of the acts that took place, he should be forced to resign immediately.

Because of my emotional ties – I will admit I’m probably baised in my opinion that until the facts come out on Paterno’s specific knowledge on the 2002 incident – I’m not willing to dispute his claim that he didn’t know the incident was criminal or sexual in nature. My heart still wants to believe that if anyone deserves the benefit of the doubt based off a lifetime's worth of positive action, it's Joe Paterno. Conversely, the Board of Trustees is meeting tonight as well as Thu/Fri – and my mind tells me that neither Paterno nor Spanier will retain their positions. Regardless of what happens, ultimately all I hope is for the truth to come out and for justice to be served.

I apologize for the length of this post.

You seem to know a lot more about this than any of us, but are you saying that the University forbid JP from addressing the issue with the authorities?

No, Paterno testified twice in front of a grand jury. I'm saying the university has prevented Paterno from addressing the issue publicly since his written statement released on Sunday - and that needs to be done due to an information gap between Paterno's claims in that release - and in the grand jury report.

Today Joe Paterno's weekly press conference scheduled for 12:30PM was cancelled by the university president Graham Spanier. Paterno's son, Scott, then announced shortly after he was attempting to secure a location off-campus where Joe could address the media. That never came to fruition. There are whispers from connected people that today Spanier asked for Paterno's resignation - which Paterno refused to give. It's just a very ugly situation.

If I walked into a gym shower with 50 year old man abusing a 10 year old boy- I would be seriously considering interving with a crowbar to the back of the man's head. At the very least I would be calling the police.

Is Sandusky married? Where the hell was his family through all of this? You mean to tell me that his wife didn't at least have suspicions that this crap was going on?

The GA was an idiot. At the very least, you break up the scene by yelling, "What the **** are you doing?" And then call the police. At the most, you go Ray Lewis on that perv, bash his brains in, then call the police. But to "run away" and let Sandusky "finish the deed" was just unbelievably appalling to me. Who would do that? 99.9 % of us wouldn't just run away.

The administration reeks. The way this has been handled is something worthy of the Bush Administration. Secretive and completely incompetent.

Joe Pa, should have done far more. I'm sure in his mind he didn't want to do anything that would ruin his friendship with someone who coached with him for 20+ years or taint the university or hurt his football program. But at the end of the day, he needed to wash himself clean of this issue and bring to justice a perv ball. Joe Pa completely ignored these victims. When something so dirty happens at your school, by a former coach, and a friend, there's no "clean" or "happy" way to resolve such an issue. Joe needed to get to the bottom of it, even though it would have been gross and painful, and stick up for those victims.

Instead, he did the very least, and will now deal with the consequences. Had he of dealt with this issue years ago, he wouldn't be dealing with them now...

Yep, pretty much ruined his legacy. Now when you bring up JP's name you will think Perv enabaler instead of legendary football coach.

I'd like to ask the GA who witnessed the shower scene: How do you walk away from a little boy being *** raped in the shower by a grown man? How can somebody live with themselves knowing that they could have saved that kid but instead chose to walk away?

IMO he's not quite as disgusting as Sandusky, but he's damn close.

You're the only person I know who would bring up politics during a discussion with a child molestation case. You just can't keep yourself from stating your side can you?

Joe Pa, understandably, didn't want to deal with this issue. It's gross. It involved a friend and former co-worker doing one of the most horrible things one could do.

Unfortunately, the principles he taught his football team, he didn't practice.

This situation was going to be bad no matter what. Whether this came out years ago and he came out publicly and blew away Sardusky, or this "duck and cover" thing now. Whenever child abuse occurs by people in high profile positions, it's going to be bad.

But instead of dealing with a wheelbarrow of crap then, they're dealing with a mountain size of crap now. I don't see how Pa or Penn St will ever recover from this... Good luck to the next HC....

In Pa's attempts to save himself, his former coach, and the school's reputation, he probably made it worse by doing the bare minimum.

Which is sad, because he was basically the Malone, George Washington, JSlo, Lavell, Michael Jordan, John Elway, Gandhi, and whatever else you can think of, of that University. He was the face, the celeb, the leader, the moral authority, and probably the most recognizable person to have ever walked in that entire state. All he needed to do, was make one phone call. One call, that's all.

"Pres of the University, this is Joe, we have a situation that hasn't been resolved. In fact, you dumbasses haven't done anything about it. I'm going public with it. Join me if you want. But I'm not letting this gross situation sink me, my program, my university, and continue to rob justice for so many young people. Goodbye"

What do you mean by "go Ray Lewis on his ***"?

Name another group or organization that would have handled this situation worse?

As bad and corrupt as I see Ohio St, Auburn, and the BCS, I don't see very many other schools or organizations that would cover up child sex crimes.

Where's Sardusky's wife in all of this?

His family? What do they think? They had no idea that any of this crap was going on?

Serious question, could any of you imagine Bronco or Kyle "just" making a phone call to the AD over something like this?

Where's Sardusky's wife in all of this?

His family? What do they think? They had no idea that any of this crap was going on?

Most of the abuse happened on school grounds from what I read. I know some happened in the basement down in the bedroom. From that transcript, this guy knew what he was doing and knew how to hide it. Most people that are like him seem to be normal to loved ones and a lot of them have no idea they are even doing those things. Maybe he never showed signs or maybe his wife and family did know but I'd find it hard to believe that. I think he had such a huge problem that he was good at hiding it.

It's sad that people knew about all this and years went by and not one person thought, "Hmm....Sandusky hasn't been arrested? Oh well!" All they basically did was say, "You can't come around here anymore." Almost as if they were saying, "We don't really care what you're doing, as long as you're not doing it anymore on school grounds."

And Thriller, very good analogy of them having a bunch of crap to deal with and it now being a mountain. I wouldn't say a mountain though. More like the size of a continent.
