What's new

Phoenix @ Utah 7 pm MT

See, I read in the Trib about how bad Hayward's defense on Turk was, but the thing is (and I could be wrong here), I'm pretty sure Sap had the Turk assignment at the beginning of the game. The announcers even talked about it, how it might be tough for Sap to guard a 4 who plays the perimeter, shoots the 3-ball, and is really more like a 3.

I think Hayward did fine for the most part last night, especially in the later half. One of his drives into a layup, he was definitely no-called on. Again, as with other games, I feel that if a couple more of his shots would have just gone down, he would have been lauded as playing great.

His pass to CJ on the perimeter, his feed to DWill inside -- these were pretty spectacular passes and I don't think you see most rookies make passes like those (especially rookies who are Forwards). I'm not going to have my hopes for Hayward dashed yet.

The only downside is that he was definitely pouting a bit when things didn't go his way. It is just one game, just gotta play through it kid.

Exactly. I thought that was Millsap's problem and so did the announcers.

Exactly.

thats the point where was he when hedo was dropping those 3 pt long range bombers inhis face? Probly too busy counting money he doenst even deserve for the 9th pickand being a bust. hello gordon this is the nba and the last time i checked the 3 pointers ar worth the most out of any of the shots unless they have 4 pointers now! hmmm suprised they did'nt teach you that at butler. oh well all you care about is u got your honda acord so now ur just laughing at the bank.

He has a high B-ball IQ, so he will learn that type of stuff quickly.

Hayward scares me. My disappointment will know no bounds if he doesn't get DRASTICALLY better.

Just going off my memory now, which is clouded by years, but I remember Hedo coming off a pick where he was being chased by Gordo and Gordo getting hung up. I also remember another time Sap got hung up and it looked like Gordo should've rotated over. What do I know? I'm coaching my daughter's 7th grade team at the Y... (They're pretty good, though, I have to say, but until I've got them all playing above the rim I'll hold off on my coaching "genius).

I thought Josh Childress looked good for a guy who left basketball for a few years.

Also, no one that was picked after Hayward is playing better than he is (with the exception of our very own Jeremy Evans). Heck, if we would have had a chance to draft Favors, some people would be pounding him to the ground already. So give him some time. He will get there.

Agreed. Also about the pouting, it is pretty natural as he has been the main contributor to all the winning teams he was on so this should motivate him to get better as the season progresses and when next season comes.

1) Was Fes hurt? Someone mentioned his x-rays were negative.

2) His box score: 14:52 of play, 3-6 from field, 2-4 from line, 8 points, 5 rebounds, 1 block, 1 assist, 2 turnovers, 4 personal fouls...saw some highlights...looked way more in shape/athletic.

You chicken littles need to chill out on Hayward. He's a rookie who hasn't even played his first regular season game and you're calling him a bust. He has a confidence problem right now, but that will come in time. He is still learning the system and the major differences between the college and pro game. He will be fine.

Yeah I was really impressed overall with Fes. His little hook in the paint was really nice. He seemed to be aggressive on the boards and had a nice block as well.

On a positive note with Hayward the kid can sure pass.
He's going to be a lot of fun to watch on fast breaks, and with Deron over the next couple of years.
His shot will come around. He's not going to be a deadly shooter, but I think he'll be clutch.

Fes is really trying hard on defense. He's trying to make plays. It's fustrating to watch him go after people on defense, but they are still scoring on him. The effort is great to see though.
If he can improve his timing, and continue to work hard it will pay off.

I'll try to let off Hayward, but at the same point in their respective careers, Koufos looked better. FWIW.

Your statements are fair. The Jazz reached for this kid, and they are going to have to take some heat for it.

The fustration with Hayward for me is where he was drafted. He never did look like a top 10 pick to me.
He's a good player. He looks like a late 1st round, early second round guy to me that I would have liked to have picked there. Since we were all so excited
with having a lottery pick Hayward feels like a big let down. Frankly, it's always going to be that way. I think he'll be a nice player, hit some big clutch shots, but
never be a consistent force on either end. He's a good role player, and that's never what you shoot for with the 9th pick.

You should share that crystal ball and that reefer, dude! Amazing that you know exactly who he is after a couple of pre-season games in a system that in NO way resembles his college system.

I'm not claiming to know more about basketball than 90% of the people on this board, but I think it is pretty clear that Hayward has some qualities that are uncommon for somebody his height, athletic ability, and bball IQ.

In the end, what the **** do you expect a 20 year old rookie wing to contribute in this league?

Also, his play hasn't been as bad as some people on here are bell-achingly claiming it has been. This is turning into a ridiculous saga................
