Predict what the Jazz do before July 1st

He is talking about a trade before the books are closed on 2016-2017, which is July 1st.

Help me understand how a trade for a player with 2017 salary impacts the books before July 1? We aren't able to allocate the 2017 salary to the books before it is paid, correct?

It doesnt affect anything, but the Jazz can just make trades much easier right now as they have more cap-space.

Any of the following or a combination of these:

A. Sign and trade for someone - Paul Millsap for Favors plus Burks??

B. Use cap room to take in somebody from a team who are already over the cap (can include exchange of draft picks and one player)
1. Bucks - Middleton? Henson? Snell? Parker?
2. Raptors - DMC?
3. Blazers - ? Harkless?
4. Cavs - as a third team

C. Trade Boris for whoever; May include draft picks or another player
Boris gets waived; Boris signs with Jazz for a lower amount (not sure if immediately allowed); Boris happy
1. Beverly?
2. Rubio?
3. Green or Mills?

D: Free agent signing - dunno who

You cant sign and trade for anyone before July 1st....

Jazz trade something for a back up PG. Rubio/Beverly/Joseph...

Mack, Neto and Withey are gone. Jazz drop Diaw of needed.

They re-sign Hayward and Ingles. Then they manage to go over the cap and sign Hill (bird rights)

Gobert/Bradley
Favors/Diaw/Bolomboy
Hayward/JJ/Ingles
Hood/Mitchell/Burks
Hill/Beverly(Joseph)/Exum.

Then 2 of the 2 way contracts. Our 2nd rounder and Jack Cooley (he's on the Jazz D league team again)maybe?

I thought you were getting rid of Diaw. Why bring back Ingles if he is going to be third string. Have you given up on Exum, it seems like you have if he is the fourth PG. There is no way the kid signs with us if we make him 4th string.

I still believe Exum with be a player in this league if he gets mentally tougher. I think people expected too much of him since he was the 5th pick. He was 19 years and played in a sub par pro league for a year. Then he blows out his knee. All accounts from the FO he is working his butt off so I am ready to see some results. Remember people it took Hayward seven years before he became an all-star. I would use some of the cap space to sign Ingles and trade for Beverly. Hill wants too much money and his injuries are a major concern.

We can only trade for somebody signed through the 2017/18 season. And yes, we have around $14 million in cap room so we could just absorb any player who makes less than that. Or we could trade Diaw ($7 million non guaranteed) and we could take back just over $20 million.

If we decide not to use the asset of 2016/17 cap space, it HAS to be because we are keeping Hayward, Hill and probably Ingles too. If not, we wasted an asset.

Hell no to DMC overpaid and is falling off heavily

Sorry, didn't put this but that's more a positional list (aside from starters) than a depth chart. As for why on ingles, exum...depth.

Haven't given up on anyone except maybe Burks. Diaw is the sacrificial lamb, if needed.

How does Diaw's contract work? Could we technically waive him right now and have like $21mil in cap space? I know it would be smarter to trade him since his nonguaranteed contract is a valuable trade asset, but I'm just curious.

No - he is guaranteed for 2016/17 but is not for the 2017/18 season. That's why it's worth so much. It can be used to make salaries work and then the receiving team can just dump him.

This trade for a few reasons. Before I get to it, I'm going with logic first:

- Favors is probably gone next summer. His value, though lower than we value him, is higher now than it ever will be.
- we have $14 million to burn
- Indy wants to trade PG but hasn't found the trade yet.
- LA wants PG in a big way
- There are tons of PG to Boston rumors
- LA wants lure free agents in 2018
- LA was called Ball's team at presser
- we want to build a contender around Gobert

Pacers get Randle, Favors, Diaw and the OKC pick
Lakers get PG and Al Jefferson
Jazz get Brandon Ingram and Deng

Why for Pacers - they get a young player, a guy they might want to keep, a 1st and get to dump Jefferson

Why for LA - Ingram cant be happy with all this Lonzo attention. This year's #2 upstaging last year's #2? LA simply has to get George and it seems like they need a 3rd team. They don't want to lose Ingram, but they HAVE to get PG now. If he goes to Boston and stays... Jefferson helps them make a playoff push this year, but he isn't guaranteed for 2018/19.

Why for us: use the $14 million cushion we have. We aren't going to get a young, promising talent like Ingram in no way, shape or form now that we have a beast down low in Gobert and a young, promising backcourt. We simply can't draft one mid or late first and we can't convince one to come to Utah. Deng is a useful vet who can play SF or PF. If Hayward stays, he realizes we could be a favorite in 1-3 years. A favorite.

So Jazz can essentially have $21M in cap space? Team X trades Utah a player making $21M. Jazz send Diaw back. Trade is approved because the net to Utah is $14M. Team X then declines 2017/18 option and thus clears $21M off their books. Did I get that right?

Has Utah held a press conference for Bradley and Mitchell? Don't most teams introduce their players to the media within a day or two? I know Utah LOVES Mitchell. But could a deal be brewing and DL doesn't want to put DM through a situation where he holds a press conference, then has to do it all over again for another team? Maybe this is a Kevin Love type situation where Team X is insisting DM be part of the deal.

I've heard DL still wants to re-sign Hill and Ingles. Pretty crowded backcourt with Exum, Hill, Hood, Ingles, Mitchell. Throw in Burks (trying to rehab his trade value) and Neto. NGW is likely 2-way player but could be a 3rd-string PG.

I like your thinking, LoPo. The George to Boston (if Hayward goes there as a FA) has to be a little concerning to LA. Enough to head off with a 3-way trade? Not sure. Maybe have to sweeten the pot a little. Give them Mitchell, too?

Jazz are doing their pressers next week so they can stay in Utah and train for Summer League instead of flying back and forth several times.

No way Pacers go for this. They would want Ingram. Why would they trade PG for THREE power forwards? They need a wing-type player to replace George.
Switch Randle for Ingram between the Jazz and Indy and that would be closer to getting it done. Not that I would like this trade. But it would be more realistic.

The Lakers are NOT trading Ingram. They've made that abundantly clear. Several times. Furthermore it's not even necessary for them to surrender Ingram to acquire PG.

They probably won't trade Ingram you are right.

If Indy wanted Clarkson, Randle and/or #27 and #28 (predraft), they would have done it already. I think LA has to use Ingram to get George or wait to the deadline or hope he just comes next season.

LA taking some huge risks. If he goes to Boston or Cleveland and stays, LA dumped Russell for nothing.
