Preseason Game 1: Utah @ Portland, Monday Dec 19th, 8pm MST

Calm down, everyone.

That is, unless you're saying to trade the non-Jazz players (Harris, Jefferson), and put the vets to the bench. Then join me from last year.

Wow, Harpring finally said something that makes sense - that Hayward needs to prove he can make shots when it is not April and team is out of playoffs and when it is not 20 pts blowout game...

I actually thought that was quite a stupid thing to say since he never got the chance to play before april. And he also never played when they were in the playoff hunt. Its hard to prove you can make shots when the games matter and before april while you are sitting on the bench.

I am not worried about Ty. He is trying different combinations. First of all, the Blazers played GREAT!!! They have some talented younger players. Man I miss Wes. THe Jazz vets pretty much stuck up the place. If the Jazz are going to run more than they certainly cannot have Memo in the game. I have my doubts that Jefferson can be on a running team. Was not a big fan of Devin Harris and tonight he reminded me why. I can not take any more CJ miles. He has had his fair chance and he just is not consistent enough.

I was really impressed with Favors offensively. He does need to stay around the basket. He has a decent jumpshot but that is not what the Jazz need from him. However, I am not going to complain 25/12 is nothing to complain about. I think he can put up those numbers if he is given playing time. His defense wasn't that great. Actually the whole team pretty much sucked on defense but that is mostly because of them learning a new way to play defense and having Memo defend Batum or Wallace.
Burks had a few good plays but he seemed a little nervous. Kanter rebounded like a pro but got schooled on defense and needs to learn to finish around the basket. I think he will. A couple of his bad shots were due to poor execution by our guards. Jeremy Evans needs to play more. Hayward played ok not great. At least he wasn't over thinking.

I know it is first preseason game but these were my impressions.

Really can't be too critical because it's preseason.

Burks showed flashes and was probably our best wing player today, but is clearly not going to get the calls he probably got in college. He will have to adjust to that.

Hayward blew today. Didn't shoot well. Didn't defend that well. Just overall meh.

Kanter has 0 offensive moves that can work in the NBA at this point. Right now his only NBA skill is rebounding. Hopefully he develops down the line into a dominant scorer, but it won't be any time soon.

Bell looked ok. I think he may have to start just to have someone in the starting line who is calm and isn't going to make too many rookie mistakes.

Harris looked meh. Needs to be more careful with the ball. I think that will come once he develops chemistry with the guys. Would not be upset if we traded him though

Okur looked like crap. He was asked to guard Gerald Wallace and Batum who are two of the more athletic SF's in the game, so I'm not going to hold his performance against him.

Jefferson was meh.

Miles looked really good to start, then was meh.

Watson looked good. I like him playing with the young guys as someone who can keep them under control.

Howard came in and missed 4 shots. I think two of those were late in the shot clock.

Evans dunked the ball 3 times. I like him coming in for a minute or 2, and throwing down 2 alley oops.

FAVORS! He was just too much physically for anyone on Portland to handle. And 1 dunks galore. Good defense. Good rebounding. He should be starting no doubt.

From this preseason game I would say my hopefully starting 5 is......

Harris
Bell
Hayward
Millsap
Favors

It was so dumb to not keep Matthews. He was a bargain.
Hindsight it 20/20. He didn't show a lot more than playing that floor-spacing wing defender on the Jazz. Maybe it was the system, maybe it was him naturally growing, maybe the Jazz whiffing put another chip on his shoulder. It's all rather academic though.

The Jazz were either going to have no Okur, Boozer, or Jefferson, or they were going to let Matthews walk at that price. As much as I hate(d) Jefferson, that was the right moment at the time, Jefferson not working out thus far and Bell being washed up notwithstanding.

Also, if the worst the Jazz can do is get a high pick on top of another possible lottery pick, then cool. But I'm not rooting for losses.

Not a bad assessment. Except replace Bell in your starting lineup, please. Miles, Burks, hell .. put Corbin in at SG .. just not Bell.

Okur is not a PF in this league. If anything, he's a Sam Perkins-type who comes in to shoot threes when there's nothing better to do. On top of that, he only rebounds when the ball falls right into his hands.

Case in point: Okur = 2 rebs; Kanter = 10 rebs in the same amount of game time. Both are 6'11". Both are Turkish.

I have been on that bandwagon since last year as well. I hope that it starts to catch some momentum. Kinda like the Blazers all night long...........

We need Kendall Marshall. It's apparent we have a lot of talent, but Harris isn't a PG who can tap into that fully. Neither is Watson. Marshall can.

Is the turn around jumper (a-la Hakeem) part of Kanters game? Seen that twice now.....

Most of Kanter's wild/bad shots including the turn around jumper came with little time on the shot clock. Kanter definitely will take some time to adjust to the athleticism of NBA players but he can rebound already. I was pleasantly surprised about his rebounding. He should play over Memo if you ask me.

Bell looked ok because he hit a few jumpers in the 2nd half? Come on.
He was nowhere in the 1st, played horrible defense, and had a few turnovers. He was pretty awful at best.

Anytime I watch W.Matthews I cringe at the though that Jazz gave him away and instead we have R.Bell. I have bad feeling next time we play AK's new team I wil have the same feeling watching at J.Howard. All this money saving thing is good for G.Miller, not so good for win/loss column.
Did you offer to send Greg an extra $10M to cover Wes' salary + the luxury tax penalty? I don't think anyone will argue that losing Matthews didn't hurt. Actually, it's pretty ironic that being on the hook for the outrageous salary to AK pretty much sealed the fate of Matthews when Portland offered him all that $.

There is a lot more to playing PG than knowing how to pass the ball.

That said, the Jazz need a PG for the future yesterday. I really think last year was a great opportunity to grab a pick or two late in the draft and take a flier on a PG. And/Or Jimmy Butler.

I also don't think Kanter has a "lack of moves". His footwork was nice at times. He just has no leaping ability. He makes a good move, and then can't explode like
Favors. This may always be his biggest weakness.

Thank you.

There is a nice list of casualties because of AK's contract.
