What's new

Preseason Game 1: Utah @ Portland, Monday Dec 19th, 8pm MST

Kanter was terrible. Yeah, he plays OK in the paint (awful in the high post). But he's horrific defensively right now. And he's even getting schooled in the low post. He's far away from being useful in an actual pro game.

Terrible is an exaggeration; he was 4/4 from the charity stripe, and and hit double figures in rebounding. Its funny how you've come to so many judgements to his game, when weve just seen him play the first NBA game of his career. Its unfair to assume that Kanter will be a solid defender right from the get-go, seeing as he hasn't played consistent basketball in two years; taking him out of the lineup will just make him worse. Not understanding your reasoning.

He rebounded very well and hit his FT's. Other than that he played pretty bad. Luckily though, rebounding and hitting FT's are very important and could land him 10-15 mpg.

He did much more than Okur did. Okur was never the quickest guy on the floor, but he looked like a sloth out there. Though in his defense the starters sucked so bad that he may have just been collectively awful instead of individually awful.

Man it was great to see some basketball!!!

Favors- Looks like he will be at the top of the most improved list in the league for this season. He was beastly!!
Burks- the boy can play, that pick-n-roll he ran with favors was amazing. If he gets time this season he will be our starting 2.
Kanter- Looks like he will be Milsap but with hieght. Loved his intesity, probably ran too many plays for him instead of favors when they were both out there.
Hayward- Dude needs to slow down and remeber what he did at the end of last season.
Okur- I was honestly thinking he still had something left in the tank, needs to come off the bench and earn his playing time.
Harris- good passes please!! I hope its just pre-season rust that had him play that bad.
Howard- looked to prove something off the bat, didn't play well but looked to be capable once he knows the system.
Jefferson- not much to say looked to be were he was last year, showed some rust.
CJ- Dude you had me excited, then well you all saw the game. Vintage CJ!
Watson-Best offseason move we made! He will win us games!

Can't wait for wednesday and see how the team responds to our fans!

Wow, that's some impressive optimism.
I think it's worth pointing out that Devin Harris had only 2 assists and Al Jefferson had only 3 rebounds. Something isn't right here.
Raja Bell was invisible, just taking up space, except for the couple of shots he got on kick-outs.
CJ Miles showed some potential, but didn't get many touches. A guy like him needs to warm up and stay hot.
Okur didn't even try to defend or rebound against guys who were quicker. He was Boozer-esque out there.

I think the Jazz should hand over the keys to the younger players sooner rather than later if the vets don't execute better. The team used to rely on one-dimensional role players and a dynamic point guard. Now we need to play multi-dimensional players like Burks, Hayward, Miles over players like Raja and Okur. Josh Howard and Paul Millsap could be all the veteran presence we need.

I'd like to see Favors, Hayward, Burks and Millsap on the floor together. Play Favors/Kanter when you want to go big. Play Favors/Millsap when you want to go smaller. No way the other team can keep both Favors and Kanter out of the paint and off the glass.

Fail. From what I saw, Kanter had 2 years worth of rust and the jitters. He has good footwork and uses his body very well.

On footwork and jitters, I'd give him a solid B. On actually playing NBA D where he has to recognize P&R's and rotate, I'd give him an F.

If all you see is Kanter Getting A Rebound, or Kanter Fighting Inside, then you're not seeing anything. Yeah, he can do those things. And he shows a lot of potential being a good inside player. But he's so bad defensively that right now he isn't worth having on the court.

I could not figure this out. Why was Ty having CJ/Haward guarding Wallace while Okur/Favors guarded Batum? Weirdest thing I could not come up with a rational reason for.
really just poor coaching IMO. I am not anti corbin, but damn I am disapointed with his decisions tonight.

Doesn't exempt from criticism on a one game basis.

Seeing if Hayward or CJ could handle a physical SF (Wallace may be the most physical one). Testing Okur?

Fair. It was preseason. If it was an experiment, I get it. But I think we already know that Okur can't defend 3's and Hayward/CJ are not equipped to handle Wallace. So I think Ty was trying to get fancy. I hope he doesn't do that anymore.

He will magically improve this defense - the defense you need the magical billyshelby lenses to see - on the bench. First pre-season game, your superior basketball intuition and viewing ability has doomed him to 13th man status.

He has played one preseason game, guy. Calm down. Both you and I can't make the judgement if he is worth playing.

We need to give Kanter a break. He's been in the league for like 5 minutes. He relies on the players around him knowing what they're doing. He was having a tough night, and he still grabbed 10 rebounds while Okur and Jefferson grabbed 5 combined.

Don't see why people are getting so mad at people critiquing Kanter's game. Yes we all know this is his first game, doesn't mean we can't comment on his game and what he did well/bad.

I think it's pretty obvious that at this point Kanter does not know jack about how to get his shot off as he has probably relied on his mature physique to create space for himself. He is quickly finding out that doesn't cut it in the NBA. Hopefully he can grasp the concept of angles and doing things quickly.

Well we'll just find out if my magical billy goggles are wrong. I see a guy who is so limited defensively that he'll be lucky to average 10 a game. We'll see who's right.

Sigged.

If Kanter is only getting 10 minutes a night it is because Corbin is insisting on playing Memo and Jeff in front of him out of "preferred-veteran" status.

Obviously there's a lot to critique, however, "terrible" just doesn't seem fair.

Not mad, just being rational. Kanter is going to have to learn that he has to dunk the ball quickly or learn to use the glass. Taking time to gather himself and going up at the rim directly is going to get him stuffed with regularity. That said, he's both willing and able to get right under the basket and battle, which is more than either Jefferson or Okur were willing to do.

And it is not only defensively. His lack of speed and lift will be serious problem on offense as well. He may learn how to seal his defender and get layups and to the free throw line ( he should really study Malones post work from his late years when he was not dunking anymore ). If he will have enough IQ and work ethic to learn it then it may get him half his points in the future otherwise it will be painful struggle with athletic players all the time.

Kanter - 6 months YOUNGER than anyone in the NBA. Take that into account and not playing regularly for 2 years I give the kid a solid B tonight.

Favors - what I was hoping for. All the kid needs is confidence. I liked the comparison of McDyess preinjury/Amare combo.

Hayward - shot didn't fall but liked mostly what I seen.

Burks - I can now see many of the DWade comparisons. Can potentially see him as the main handler/distributer in the offense with a PG there mainly to knock down outside shots.

Evans - high energy and like him at the 3 maybe with Millsap on the court. Still want to see if he can consistently hit anything outside of an Earlyoop or whatever.

Okur - Done - I think my fried turkey I had at thanksgiving moved quicker side to side

Chucker J - Chucker J.... One good game, three games of nothing. Didn't expect anything different.

Harris - still ok with him at point

Howard - no clue what he was trying to do... Good defense though

Jeffy - Looked like the slow Jeffy as last year and no push on defense.

Watson - good backup pg and glad we signed him but needs to initiate the offense sooner. Can't put all this on him.

Bell - Ring the damn bell already as his career is over
