What's new

Puerto Rico

Quite frankly I do not understand why places like Puerto Rico, and even New Orleans, are populated at all in the modern world. We know these things are going to happen. Storms of this magnitude are common in this region, and have been for hundreds of years of these cities being populated (go look at storm statistics from the 30's, easily as bad as anything recent). People know that N.O. is below sea level, and that another freak storm would wipe it out, yet again, but they stay there. Seriously there is so much land in the US they could literally drop P.R. into the middle of even like freaking Kansas and not make a blip on the radar. I think it is monumentally stupid that people continue to live in disaster alley, then get all outraged when the rest of us don't jump up and come running when the inevitable happens and costs EVERYONE billions to fix it, so they can rebuild with money that is not their own but siphoned off from everyone else as we subsidize increased prices and insurance rates and tax money that could go for actually improving quality of life, etc. then repeat and recycle in a few years.

Why there are more people living in Africa or southern Europe than in Estonia? :-)
Some reasons (purely IMHO):
1. It is much harder to survive if you have to face 4 different season and you can grow food in only one of them. Of course, hunting and fishing help save the day even in winter, but it is difficult.
2. I think that historically people have tried to live in climate that is easier to the current one. If you wanted to have good life in Estonia 100 years ago - you had built a proper house for living that provides shelter when the temperature is -30 degrees celsius. You had to built a second storage house to keep the food that you harvested in august-september-october and you had to calculate that you survive 9 months with that food. Of course, fishing and hunting is possible in winter too, but that required above average skills (how to make a fishing net, boat, how to catch a wild animal). For comparison - in southern Italy the minimum temperature is probably +15 degrees in winter; you might get bigger amount of crops between march and november. Even seafood is larger and in bigger quantities thanks to a warmer sea. Of course, because of better conditions, history has shown that the competition and therefore human casualties from the ancient times until today are much higher.
3. I suspect that the basic handycraft skills are therefore lower in those countries. For example, most of the houses in my neighbourhood and countryside are built by ordinary guys, not by specific companies. For example, typical private houses, where i live:

Of course, a lot of them have been renovated.
Countryside, where my aunt has an old farmhouse:

What is the percentage of Houston Rockets or New Orleans Pelicans fans, who can built/construct a similar house from a scratch?
Of course, living in warm climate building a house is much easier; no need for insulation, heating etc.

The USS Comfort, with over 800 doctors and nurses and hundreds of beds was serving yesterday SEVEN whole patients. While people are dying of treatable diseases in hospitals that lack medicine and electricity, we have a state of the art hospital ship in Port serving no one.

There's zero organization. Zero leadership. Donald is off attacking the NFL and media again while so many suffer.

yeha that is relaly sad. i thought socialism was ognna keep people from dying in the streets!

thats what you tyell when we right wingers dont want socialism. want people to be poor and die in the streets!

tyhis is exactly why we dont nee dsocialims and over regulation

this is the reaosn why theeir wa smor eproghress in europe than in the warmer climates

living in a place with 4 seaosn you had to plan for the future to survive. meaning your culture has been planning for thousands of years why people in africa have no long term planning. and indians in the tropics

Can the same logic he applied to Florida and Texas too? So disgusting. Most of the citizens don't have water or medicine.

He actually seems to be taking a "they deserve what they get" attitude.

President Trump served notice Thursday that he may pull back federal relief workers from Puerto Rico, effectively threatening to abandon the U.S. territory amid a staggering humanitarian crisis in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria.

Declaring the U.S. territory's electrical grid and infrastructure to have been a “disaster before hurricanes,” Trump wrote Thursday that it will be up to Congress how much federal money to appropriate to the island for its recovery efforts and that recovery workers will not stay “forever.”

In a trio of tweets, Trump wrote” “We cannot keep FEMA, the Military & the First Responders, who have been amazing (under the most difficult circumstances) in P.R. forever!”

Three weeks since Maria made landfall, much of Puerto Rico, an island of 3.4 million people, the vast majority of the island remains without power. Residents struggle to find clean water, hospitals are running short on medicine and commerce is slow with many businesses closed.

Trump on Thursday sought to shame the territory for its own plight. He tweeted, “Electric and all infrastructure was disaster before hurricanes.” And he quoted Sharyl Attkisson, a television journalist, as saying, “Puerto Rico survived the Hurricanes, now a financial crisis looms largely of their own making.”

He's taken that "deserve what they get" attitude since the start. He relishes it. Tossing paper towels, making fun of the pronunciation of Puerto Rico. It's hard to believe what a douche he's been, and that's saying something.

I guess Dutch has a point. According to him, it's perfectly OK for the President to abandon a US territory and American citizens. It's all their fault. Never mind that these are human beings who are not personally responsible for each and every decision made by their territorial government, or personally responsible for the state of their infrastructure. According to Dutch, these American citizens deserve to die. They deserve to rot in hell. Well, if that doesn't really sound like a point, consider the source of that point: Dutch. This is the same guy who once told us how much he would enjoy shooting an intruder into his house in the head. This is the guy who's hoping against hope that Trump will kill millions of people on the Korean Peninsula. This is a guy who is seriously sick in the head. Enough said...

And there in lies the problem. Donald views these American citizens as Mexicans. If their votes mattered and if they were affluent whites, I'm Sure hed be bending over backwards to appease his nazi base. Instead, he's ignoring these folks because politically he doesn't feel it necessary to help them.

Hes such a deplorable. I can't wait until he's removed.

I hate Trump as much as the next guy but labeling his supporters as Nazis is a poor, simple minded, and divisive generalization.

Right now the US govt is planning on rebuilding PR by LOANING them the money they need. Not grants, ****ing loans.

Yeah, loans. Because they have been begging for a bailout for a long time now. Their infrastructure problem is not simply a storm created problem. You act like we are not sending them FEMA aid, mobilizing the military, and the Red Cross and other charitable organizations aren't on the move.

The loans have nothing to do with the storm but with pre-existing conditions. You can get your ****ing loans panties in a wad.

To be fair, he didn't use the word "supporters"

No power, no water, destroyed housing, washed-out bridges, ruined agriculture. Frankly, President Trump is out of patience with this sort of whining from Puerto Rico.

And while relief to the island, which Trump discovered is surrounded by water ON ALL SIDES, has been slow in arriving, Trump has been lightning-fast on the blame-shifting. That started arriving by planeload, boatload and tweetload before the storm winds had even died down. And anyway, Puerto Rico is in an ocean, a big one, and they aren’t real Americans, any more than they are on that other island, Hawaii, located in an even bigger ocean. The island that former president Barack Obama tried to claim as his birthplace in his phony bid for citizenship.

Trump says that the mess in Puerto Rico is of the Puerto Ricans’ own making. They let things go, and let systems run down, decay and break. They took the lazy way, and when the crisis came, they were unprepared, so they clearly deserve whatever level of human immiseration they now suffer. What’s left of the federal government isn’t going to save them. Trump is sending an important message here.

The message is that the United States, by tolerating the unprecedented change in political climate of the Trump presidency, is letting things go, letting systems run down, decay and break. We are taking the lazy way, and when our crisis comes, there won’t be any federal government left to save us.

The Trump White House is also an island, surrounded by an ocean of excusers and collaborators. A very big ocean.

So there sits Trump, exhaling a Category 5 gale of dysfunction and indifference to human suffering in Puerto Rico, blowing away the windows, roofs and walls of our norms of governing and simple decency. The so-called adults on the premises are doing us no favors in trying to contain the damage. It isn’t being contained. It is quickly infiltrating everything it touches, like septic water, and the rot will ensure our institutions are already soggy and collapsing when we need them in the next storm.

so to all' ya'all commeis out there.

why should the puerto ricans not be responsible for their own fate. the hurricanes are not the problem. peurto rico was on live support already. actions have consequences. these people should accept the consequences!

they should not be held accountable for their ****ty way of running their country for years!

accepting left wing socialist policies and corrupt politicians for year

Base/supporters are synonymous, to be fair. Not sure what your point is.
I disagree.

I supported bush, clinton, reagan, and obama yet I am not a part of any of their base. (I wouldn't think all those presidents have an identical base, do they) Didn't vote for a single one of them either.
