Question for Dog Lovers

Oops I did it again

I've had a dog my entire life, outside of the two years I lived in an apartment when I first got married. Right now I have two pure bred labs. One is almost 14 years old. We brought him home at 5 weeks and I almost immediately started taking him to work with me. He went everywhere with me. He's to the the point now that his hips are starting to go bad (common with labs), he's basically deaf, and he's got cataracts in both eyes. I love my dogs, but I'm not putting the kind of money into one of them like you have. Maybe I'm a little cold blooded or heartless, but I made that decision a long time ago. I probably wouldn't have fixed the ACL if it were me.

Well, my dog made a miraculous recovery. He actually had a blood clot that almost killed him just after this and we stopped all his treatment. I expected him to die pretty quickly but to the surprise of the vets and me he bounced back. He was as happy as he has been in his whole life. He was running again, playing, and loving life. Every day I expected him to get worse and the cancer to come back but we got the happiest year of his life.

His cancer came back and we put him down yesterday as soon as he stopped being happy all day. I am extremely grateful to have got another 1+ years with him and especially him being so happy during that time. He was back to being a 1 year old puppy for most of the time.

The money spent was well worth it to get him for a year and I would do it again.

He will be missed though, we've shared a pillow for 12 years now.

Sometimes there are just no good options. It's a tough choice dealing with someone or some thing that you are so attached to. Make your choice and don't look back. Believe in your ability to do "what is best". Live out their days and your days without regret.

Damn, dude. That sounds beyond rough. I have no idea what I would do tbhwy. We love our one year old pup and treat him like a kid. I fear things like this happening and wonder what I would do. I just drove over 800 miles yesterday to get another puppy. Dogs are the best. Good luck with everything and don't blame yourself with what you choose and it's outcome.

I've had terrible experiences with medical treatment for pets. I haven't done it as an adult but growing up I had a cat I absolutely loved that got cancer. My parents paid for treatment and a week later the cat died having never really recovered from the treatment.

Had a golden retriever the had some hip issues. Parents paid for surgery, dog never recovered and had to be put down.

Another mostly golden retriever had some medical issues after I moved out, but I had spent a lot of with that dog. Died a few weeks after surgery.

I have a 20 year old cat now that my wife and I adopted when we were still dating. Last month the cat went blind. Has lost a bunch of weight. But still getting around okay and still loves attention. I'm not taking the cat to a vet. If her health declines to the point she's miserable I will put her down.
My parents have a 21 year old cat, who has been an outdoor only cat for the last 10 years. **** is crazy. She doesn't really do **** anymore but chill on the back porch.

One of the harder things to deal with has been our other dog during this. He is a real sweet, dopey, emotional dog. He doesnt understand why were ignoring him and was getting really depressed lately. He was also being yelled at a lot because he just wanted to play with his best friend but kept knocking him over and being in the way a lot. We also wanted to have him around when our other dog died. We wanted him to see that he was dead and not worried about where he went. But he kept trying to get into the vets bag and in her business while she was putting him to sleep.

But he is obviously getting plenty of attention now but it pretty depressed today and moping around.

Glad your at peace with the decision RM. You can hold your head up high.

If you are considering getting a new dog down the road, I would recommend adoption and from Friends of Animals located at the outlet mall in Park City. They place dogs exclusively out of the Navajo reservation in southern Utah where there are an estimated 80,000 stray dogs. The few dogs that I know of from there are some of the best dogs ever. They are mostly cow dogs with the best dispositions you can imagine. Either sweet and docile, or active and happy.

Oh and give that dopey dog a steak. He's a good boy!

That good to know about. I'll only adopt a dog from a shelter or rescue now. Thats where my dopey sweet dog is from.

I don't know think I'll get another dog for a long time or maybe ever but if I do I'll definitely look at this.

One of the reasons I go to SLC beer fest every year and volunteer there is because they help raise money for the Utah humane society. That helps dogs who are going to be put down in other shelters get adopted.

sorry about the long, sad trail with your dog. well, maybe not all that sad. sounds like he had a good life, and you had an important connection, in the long run you can be glad for the time with him.

I only read the OP when I responded. Just read more and saw you had her put down, RM. :( So sorry, dude. I bet your dog had one hell of a life and wouldn't change a thing from what it sounds.
I worry bout my big dog having health issues or not living that long all the time. It's amazing how much a dog can do for you and the amount of joy they bring.

Are you going to get another dog soon or in the future? I wonder about this decision I'll make my dogs pass. Why or why not?

Never mind. You literally answered my question right here. I have to start reading the whole thread before responding!

Have you been to Zoobrew? It's pretty damn fun too.

Not any time soon. I almost for sure that I wont get another dog while my other dog is alive. I really dont like having 2 dogs. I loved both my dogs but I feel like 2 dogs is 2-3X as much work as 1 dog. Plus I cant take losing another dog for awhile. This one was pretty hard on me. Im was closer to this dog that passed away than any dog I have had before and probably closer than most humans.

I also will never get a pure breed dog again. They are less healthy and just an arbitrary thing humans created. There is no good reason to inbreed dogs. But I am not that opposed to other people getting them. People should get what they want. I am a big fan of adopting a dog from a shelter or rescue but I would also never get a dog again that isnt a puppy. I want to see them grow up. So everyone has preferences. As long as it isnt a cruel animal breeder or something like that I dont really care.

The dog you got looks really cute, I read about them and they sound like a cool breed. They actually make me think of a bigger Cairn Terrier, which is where Westies came from.

If you have two dogs you can change your handle to Ron two dogs, pretty standard nickname down the pub if a bloke has a common name like Steve if he's got two dogs he becomes Steve two dogs. Fine thing.

Lost 3 cats to cancer, last one i'd had since he was born, was actually born in front of me, slept next to my head for nearly 17 years, still miss the little brute.

Its sucks mate, like losing a family member.

While moteling it a few weeks back I awoke right about 6:00 a.m., abruptly to a single and loud MOEW of my cat in right my ear. She was back home though 400 miles away.

I got up this morning and went to feed the dogs only to find the 15 year old chocolate lab dead.
I’ve had that dog longer than I’ve had any of my kids. This sucks.
