Jazz head coach Quin Snyder has agreed to a "long-term" extension to stay in Utah, the team announced Friday.

Snyder, who just finished his second season at the helm of the Jazz, originally signed a three-year deal with a team option for a fourth season. But the Jazz apparently did not want to wait to lock up their coach beyond that.

"We have continued to take significant steps as a team under Quin's direction," Jazz General Manager Dennis Lindsey said in a news release. "His work ethic, basketball intelligence and ability to connect with and develop our players make him the ideal head coach of the Jazz."

The Jazz have gone 78-86 in two seasons under Snyder, narrowly missing the playoffs this year as the team battled a series of injuries to their top players. Jazz officials, however, believe their team is trending in the right direction with Snyder.

"With this contract extension, we are declaring our confidence in Coach Snyder's ability to continue to develop the Utah Jazz into a championship team," said Gail Miller, owner of the Larry H. Miller Group of Companies. "The Miller family recognizes the significant progress made under his leadership and we are excited about the direction we are headed."

I like this move

No-brainer IMO.

Quin is one of the up and coming coaches in the league. Sure he has some work to do including late game management, but his knowledge of the overall game, development of players, and dedication make this an easy decision for the Jazz.

Good move. Jazz continuing to push towards a better future.

Sorry JimLes, you lose ;)

Good move, I think Quin has done a very good job so far and at least this go around we gave our coach a couple years to prove himself instead of just blindly extending (Ty......)

Good, something stable. With so much turn over and uncertaintity in recent years I appreciate something solid to build around.

By my count, only 11 coaches have longer active tenures in coaching than Quin Snyder currently (a couple coaches like Kerr and SVG were hired the same offseason so technically their tenures are equal in length).

How's that for a stat.

Holy cow. And thanks for doing the math. This is a fascinating stat!

I think this also bodes well for some of our current players who seem to have really been drawn to Snyder.

I love this move.
Also, now DL can say that our biggest off season acquisition was the extension of QS. Win-win!

Great move! Anybody know how long "long term" is? It won't surprise me to see him eventually become one of the longest tenured coaches in the league. He landed in the right place for that.

I kind of wish they would fire him and hire Frank Vogel. If Vogel doesn't get a head coaching job, they should immediately offer him an Associate Head Coach position.
