In the Paint and Mid-Range shots give the team markedly fewer points per shot. This realization has lead to the mid-range jump shot being dubbed the worst shot in basketball(The mailman rolls his eyes). Some people would say that the game is evolving into an outside shooters game while others may think that it's devolving into a 3 point shooting contest. In 2016 I'm somewhere between these 2 opinions.

In thinking about a possible solution I choose to focus on the Mid-range. My assumption is that in the paint shots will continue to be common as players try to get to the restricted area. I also think that the In the paint points result in more trips to the FT line thus providing another incentive to attempt them. The goal then becomes trying to increase the pps in the mid-range so that we can decrease the disparity between taking a mid-range jumpshot rather than taking one from somewhere else on the floor.

This is what I came up with. The area outside of the paint but inside of the 3 point line would become known as "the cue". When a team made a shot from the cue a light would be activated that would signal that the next shot the team makes from that area would be worth 3 instead of 2 points. This would increase the pps in this area from 0.788 to aprox. 0.910(0.919 is a sixth increase .901 is a seventh, the actual increase in pps should fall somewhere between that).

PPS then looks like this

Restricted Area – 1.183
In The Paint (Non-RA) – 0.793
Mid-Range – 0.910
Corner 3 – 1.157
Above The Break 3 – 1.048

Beyond just increasing the pps from mid-range, the "cue" could add an interesting dynamic to the game especially near the end of the 4th.

Whachya think?

Damn, it must be a real struggle to watch basketball games for you.

You said it was necessary for basketball to be enjoyable to watch. It isn't. You must have found basketball horrible to watch until recently. The nineties must have bored the hell out of you.

Yeah basketball is better now.

You think the floor would be less open if a huge portion of the half court was better utilized by offenses? This doesn't take away the 3 it improves the midrange pps. How would it hurt spacing?

It's gimmicky. Because you score from the same spot twice in a row you get more points? Lmao

It's not from the same spot(just inside the arc) and it's not in a row(just on the second one made). Another way to think of it is basically awarding 2.5 points for every midrange shot.

OK, that makes it less gimmicky, not sure why I read interpreted it as a certain area, guess the word "cue" just made me think of specific zones (like you would see on a shot zone chart) but I'm still against it, but it is interesting. Idk, put it in the D-League and see how it works. I would make it so it has to be two consecutive made baskets in a row. If you make a midrange shot the next midrange shot is 3 points only if you make it, if you miss it resets back.

And why arent we extending the same courtesy to the paint non-restricted area shots?

Because I'm pretty sure those numbers are calculated before points from FT and because a good number of paint points would still be attempted as guys were trying to get to the rim but were met early by a big man.

I miss watching guys who had awesome post up games with multiple pump fakes, fadeaways, up and unders The Kevin McHale / Olajuwon types who could just score all night in every way from the post
