What's new

Rio Olympics anyone?

Ok so 1/4 finals are set in men basketball. USA vs Argentina, France vs Spain, Croatia vs Serbia and Australia vs Lithuania.

The HS girl from NJ barely qualified in the 400 Hurdles for the semis tonight. She saidn she was sick and I have no reason not to believe her as she seemed honest and completely died the last 100 meters. I'm hoping she feels better today.

Woman from the Bahamas won the womens 400m run. She dove and as a result beat out an American for the gold. She is getting some crap over it and I don't understand.

She didn't break any rules so why not? Our own racer (finished 2nd) should have done so.

Who's she getting crap from? That's stupid. She was smart. I'm pissed because I didn't see it and want to watch the video and it's blocked on youtube.

Wasnt she in the lead and thought the USA women was getting close? I was under the impression that the dive slowed her down and got her a worse time but still won. And all I have heard is compliments towards her.

She was in the lead and would have been passed if she hadn't done the dive (which was more of a stumble). She was completely out of gas. Diving over the line was her only hope and it worked. Good for her. I can see how it would become a problem if everyone started diving, though. And I was halfway expecting them to DQ her for going into the other lane.

atrocious attendances at the track and field ... geez

Well Brazil isn't the most popular country for tourists with health and security concerns looming over the games in advance. And ticket prizes aren't sustainable for local population, who even stretch their budgets by only attending events with Brazilian participation.

Sydney McLaughlin really disappointed me. Granted, she's 16 so it's really tough to have expectations for a kid but she basically looked like she didn't give a damn in either the heat or the semi-finals, pretty much just coasting after the last hurdle. I hate that ****. Inexcusable. But the more I read, the more it seems obvious that she didn't even want to be there. "I'm just glad the season ended...with the Olympics." She said that after her mediocre race yesterday. And evidently, at the Olympic trials, she didn't even want to run. She went to her coaches 45 minutes before the race and told them she didn't want to run. She kept going to them and going to them, pleading with them, and they finally told her, "You're running." The crowd, the competitors. It was too much for her. Again, she's 16 so I get it, I guess. It's just really disappointing to hear. The kid needs to take a good 2-3 months off, and maybe find new coaches who know how to motivate her yet keep her at ease a bit better.

Also, the dude who won the 400 meters and broke the world record (I think from South Africa) has a coach who's some 74 year old grandmother. I think that's so awesome.

I'm surprised they don't give away the unsold tickets at the last minute just for the visual. Not only would the stadium look and sound good, but they'd earn a bit of goodwill with the locals.

Yeah. They did one of those little vignettes on her which I fast forwarded over. Now I'm kind of wishing I hadn't deleted it.

Lithuania's coach needs to go after these Olympics. In all games lost they getting killed by guard perimeter defence and 3 point shot. I thought two losses would force you to make some adjustments but no, Australians just doing the same thing like Spain and Croatia did.

Congrats to Australia. Total domination and as I said Lithuanian coach needs to go. How you can have legitimate NBA center on your roster and yet make all your game plan around pathetic guards. Baynes is NBA scrub yet looked like NBA all star with all those inside passes Australian guards were giving him.

The coverage on NBC at night really sucks. They spend 10-15 minutes having us sit through the warm-ups and then show us a race that the US does not even get a medal in. I would so much rather see highlights of all the events during that wasted time than the crap they are showing each night. I also agree with the poster on how poor it looks to have the empty seats in every arena. How difficult is to to give the tickets away at the last minute?

afaik they're doing that. But ppl still don't wanna come just for the sake of watching a random event.

This article says that they haven't reduced prices because the profitability of the games is dependent on ticket sales. It also says there have been transportation and security delays that have frustrated people who want to attend. It also says that the city tried to buy tickets to give away for free but they were blocked by political opponents who felt that would be buying votes.
